"This book is the concise story of NATO. It considers the origins, development, challenges, structure and direction of the Alliance against the backdrop of a changing world and a changing Europe, the changing relationship of the US to its Allies, the twin threats posed by both Russia and terrorism, the emerging challenge of China and the EU-NATO relationship. Crucially, the book will consider the impact of new and emerging disruptive technologies on NATO planning, force and resources, as well as NATO place in a changing world. Women, peace and security will be discussed, together with NATO's role in combatting climate change. Central to the book will be a debate over the future of deterrence and defence and the role of nuclear, conventional, cyber and information strategies in a new deterrent posture. The book will conclude by looking out to 2030 and beyond. The world-wide market will include academia, the student body on all aspects of IS, strategic studies, Cold War history, think-tanks, international institutions and interested readers"--
"Sex and sexuality are an integral part of human life and vital for the survival of the human race, but sexual freedoms in many countries have yet to be enshrined as constitutional rights. Focusing primarily on Japan, Shigenori Matsui explores the extent to which governments should be allowed to restrict or influence sexual autonomy. Should a constitution encompass rights including: to decide or change sexual or gender identity; to have children, through natural birth or through medically assisted reproduction; or to not have children, through access to abortion? This rigorously detailed legal analysis has implications for government policy in all countries facing similar issues."--

"A decade in the making, The Inheritors tracks three ordinary South Africans over fifty years in a sweeping, exquisitely written look at what really happens after a country resolves to end white supremacy. Dipuo grew up on the south side of the mine dump that separated Johannesburg's Black townships from the white-only city. Some nights she hiked to the top. On the other side were glittering lights as well as, she knew, prejudice and hubris; on her side there was dust but also love. To a South African teenager in the 1980s-even an anti-apartheid activist like Dipuo-the divide appeared eternal. But then, in 1994, the world's last explicitly segregationist regime collapsed to make way for something unprecedented. The end of apartheid carried South Africa past a point the United States and Europe are still moving slowly towards: the ascent to political, cultural, and intellectual power of members of the demographic groups the countries once colonized or enslaved. The Inheritors weaves together the stories of Dipuo, her daughter Malaika, and Christo-one of the last White South Africans drafted to fight for apartheid as the system crumbled around him-to consider what happens when people once locked into certain kinds of power relations find their status shifting. With intimate reporting, keen psychological insight, and luminous prose, the book probes how everyday people grapple with great social change, exploring questions that preoccupy not only South Africans but so many of us today: How can we let go of our individual and national pasts? How should old debts be paid? How much sympathy do we owe one another? And how does a person live an honorable life in a society that-for both better and worse-they no longer recognize?"--
"This book investigates the ways in which people in the Lake Chad region that divides Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon deal with the crises of violence, jihadism, drought, and climate change that continue to afflict the area. In 2014 Boko Haram expanded into the Lake Chad region, prompting a counter-insurgency response, and exacerbating pre-existing social and ecological challenges. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, this book investigates how people within the liminal space of this key border region respond to and navigate the unpredictability which typifies their day-to-day lives. Building up a picture of individual and community experiences of crisis, the book gradually demonstrates the complex interactions between economic circuits, political orders, socio-religious processes, and labour practices which operate in the region. This book will be of interest to researchers across African studies, security studies, political science, and border studies"--
