Drawing on approaches from the history of emotions, Eve Tignol investigates how they were collectively cultivated and debated for the shaping of Muslim community identity and for political mobilisation in north India in the wake of the Uprising of 1857 until the 1940s. Utilising a rich corpus of Urdu sources evoking the past, including newspapers, colonial records, pamphlets, novels, letters, essays and poetry, she explores the ways in which writing took on a particular significance for Muslim elites in North India during this period. Uncovering different episodes in the history of British India as vignettes, she highlights a multiplicity of emotional styles and of memory works, and their controversial nature. The book demonstrates the significance of grief as a proactive tool in creating solidarities and deepens our understanding of the dynamics behind collective action in colonial north India.

"I begin the first chapter of the present book with definitions, because the concepts related to ancestry are often confused in the public discourse. Sometimes this is done because people do not pay attention to what exactly these concepts are about, and so use them interchangeably. For instance, when the majority of a people in a nation are also considered to be members of the same ethnic group, nationality and ethnicity can be easily confused. Other times, different concepts are intentionally used to refer to the same category. For instance, "White" is a category that is described as race in the US Census and as ethnicity in the UK census. Therefore, I have decided to define these concepts right from the start, in order to clarify their differences and also show how their improper use may lead to misunderstandings"--

Today, African immigrants constitute a growing and increasingly visible component of the US population. African Immigrants in the United States: The Gendering Significance of Race? takes a closer look at the growth of African immigration to the United States in recent decades, as well as implications of this growth. Mamadi Corra highlights several resulting sociodemographic processes underway, including the changing composition of the foreign-born and US Black populations. Corra also takes a closer look at sociodemographic profiles of these "new African Americans" or "new Americans," highlighting the increasing diversity, yet also the racialized portrait of this group of immigrants.
