"This book fundamentally reinterprets the rise of the natural and social sciences as sources of political authority in modern America. Andrew Jewett demonstrates the remarkable persistence of a belief that the scientific enterprise carried with it a set of ethical resources capable of grounding a democratic culture - a political function widely assigned to religion. The book traces the shifting formulations of this belief from the creation of the research universities in the Civil War era to the early Cold War, tracking hundreds of leading scholars who challenged technocratic modes of governance rooted in a strictly value-neutral image of science. Many of these figures favored a deliberative model of democracy, defined by a vigorous process of public deliberation rather than rationalized administration or interest-group bargaining. This vision generated surprisingly nuanced portraits of science in the years before the military-industrial complex"--

Although paintings are often seen as part of material culture, the wills of 18th-century bishops have reserved a special fate for certain works. The singular aspect of these works resides in their ability to embody an aspect of the donor. Focusing on this singularization process (by the way the paintings are depicted or exhibited or by the stories they convey) allows us to understand how these images build and strengthen links of affection or service. The way the various values associated with paintings interact and play out depending on the recipient reflects the perceived equivalence in the bishop's mind between the value of a gift and the value of the recipient, and serves to intermingle related material, affective, and social aspects. The aim of this study is to identify the conditions contributing to the singularization of objects and their involvement in affective links. It is also intended to contribute to the history of the value of art, with less emphasis on the ontological than on the historical and social.
A powerful study illuminates our nation's collective civic fault lines Recent events have turned the spotlight on the issue of race in modern America, and the current cultural climate calls out for more research, education, dialogue, and understanding. Race and Social Change: A Quest, A Study, A Call to Action focuses on a provocative social science experiment with the potential to address these needs. Through an analysis grounded in the perspectives of developmental psychology, adaptive leadership and complex systems theory, the inquiry at the heart of this book illuminates dynamics of race and social change in surprising and important ways. Author Max Klau explains how his own quest for insight into these matters led to the empirical study at the heart of this book, and he presents the results of years of research that integrate findings at the individual, group, and whole system levels of analysis. It's an effort to explore one of the most controversial and deeply divisive subject's in American civic life using the tools of social science and empiricism. Readers will: Review a long tradition of classic, provocative social science experiments and learn how the study presented here extends that tradition into new and unexplored territory Engage with findings from years of research that reveal insights into dynamics of race and social change unfolding simultaneously at the individual, group, and whole systems levels Encounter a call to action with implications for our own personal journeys and for national policy at this critical moment in American civic life At a moment when our nation is once again bitterly divided around matters at the heart of American civic life, Race and Social Change: A Quest, A Study, A Call to Action seeks to push our collective journey forward with insights that promise to promote insight, understanding, and healing.

In health care, consumer satisfaction is an important
evaluation instrument to determine the quality of services. In recent
years, the concept has assumed much greater significance particularly in
market based health systems. Also, in World Health Organisation's
framework for health care assessment, the customer satisfaction is given
due consideration. On the contrary, in developing countries
particularly, the concept is one of the most ignored elements in
evaluation of health care systems. Pakistan is also a case in point.
Review of literature and general health management systems in the
country suggests scarcity of information on consumer satisfaction as
well as its neglect as a crucial element in health systems. This present
study—which is cross-sectional—is designed on the ground that there is a
need to incorporate consumer satisfaction in health care evaluation.
This study, presents a scientific analysis of Punjab Employees Social
Security Institution Hospital, Rawalpindi (PESSI) using the Patient
Survey Questionnaire technique, the most universal approach used by
international studies to evaluate consumer satisfaction with health
services. Based on study results, generally, we conclude that consumers
have expressed high level of satisfaction for various quality assessment
scales. Despite these findings, it has also been noted that significant
proportion of patients have also expressed medium as well as low
satisfaction for certain scales. It tends to suggest that quality of
services needs to be improved for specific items as well as certain
scales including communication, general satisfaction, and interpersonal
aspects for improvements in provision of certain services at the
hospital. JEL classification: I11, I18, I38 Keywords: Customer

-- Back cover
Migratorna kretanja stanovništva danas predstavljaju vrlo bitan demografski i društveni fenomen. ; Today, migratory movements are very important demographic and social phenomenon. If we take into account the empirical evidence of increasing immigration volume and rates, the theoretical and research interest in this topic becomes understandable. This article will focus on labour migration, as it seems that a wide number of spatial movements are driven by economic motives. The aim of this paper is to examine the most important theoretical approaches, with special overview of Massey's synthesis, and to point out the lack of emphasis on political and legal dimensions in the migration processes.

Abstract In this paper, I focus attention on one aspect of business social responsibility, the relationship between businesses and community. Specifically, I explore the impact of business operators' perceptions about norms of collective action in their communities on the level of their support for and commitment to their communities. This relationship was elaborated using data from interviews with 1,008 business owners and managers randomly selected from 30 small Iowa communities (500 to 10,000 in population). Findings indicate the majority of small business operators report that they are committed to and provide support for their community. Also, it is concluded that operators' educational levels and lengths of residence, the success and age of their businesses, and their perceptions of community levels of collective action are significantly associated with levels of business social responsibility.

Based on the analysis of biographical data and spheres of scientific and social activity of the German linguist and representative of the German philological neo-humanism, statesman and politician, reformer of European University education Wilhelm von Humboldt, the article considers the formation of the linguo-philosophical system, which determined the main directions of development of European and world linguistics of the XX–XXI century. It was found out that the report "on the comparative study of languages of different epochs of their development", read at the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1820, became a milestone fact of Humboldt's scientific biography, the result of personal existential experience, conscious purposeful accumulation of facts of manifestations of the national spirit of different European peoples, including full-fledged languages and dialects, mythological national layer, traditions, cultural artifacts, folklore and fiction texts of different epochs. It is proved that the fundamental ideas of Humboldt's linguo-philosophical system are represented and published in the work "on the difference of articles and its influence on organic nature" (1794). The formula of "beautiful unity" of things and phenomena uttered by Humboldt was interpreted as the result of energy activity of corporal world, therefore, all its manifestations, including the human, their actions and language (the book "Hermann and Dorothea", Goethe,1798), must be considered, understood and systematized, as the results of the operation of the human spirit. Travelling by France, Spain and Italy not only provided Humboldt by new aesthetic experiences, but finally determined the vector of his linguistic research that ended in original linguo-philosophical concept, where an ideal component does not contradict the material one, but complements it: the language is a spirit, and the spirit of people is their language ("the difference of the structure of human languages and its influence on the spiritual development of mankind").

"Presenting human security perspectives on climate change, this volume raises issues of equity, ethics and environmental justice, as well as our capacity to respond to what is increasingly considered to be the greatest societal challenge for humankind. Written by international experts, it argues that climate change must be viewed as an issue of human security, and not an environmental problem that can be managed in isolation from larger questions concerning development trajectories, and ethical obligations towards the poor and to future generations. The concept of human security offers a new approach to the challenges of climate change, and the responses that could lead to a more equitable and sustainable future. Climate Change, Ethics and Human Security will be of interest to researchers, policy makers, and practitioners concerned with the human dimensions of climate change, as well as to upper-level students in the social sciences and humanities interested in climate change"--
