An examination of complications involved in interpreting the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) focuses on the role of religious leaders, especially in countries like Iran where religion is the political foundation of the state. UNICEF has entered into a dialogue with Islamic scholars by highlighting similarities between Islam & international standards. This paper aims to turn attention to an intriguing stream of thought in the multi-faceted and plural Islamic discourse in Indonesia, a home to the largest Muslim community in the world. This stream of thought in Indonesia attempts to connect Islamic doctrine, belief, thinking and knowledge with basic liberal themes such as separation between religion and politics, pluralism, freedom of thought, democracy, progress, human rights, gender equality and interfaith dialogue. Matthew Wilson, an associate professor of political science at Southern Methodist University. The essays in the volume-eleven in all-address topics ranging from religious mobilization, evangelicalism, the political behavior of American Catholics, American Mormonism, Latino political attitudes and behavior, the public opinion and preferences of American Jews, the politics of American Muslims, and secularism in the American electorate.

While written during Malcolm X's Muslim years, the narrative standpoint of The Autobiography of Malcolm X (As Told to Alex Haley) often mirrors the "cool pose" he adopted as a hustler in the black ghettoes of Harlem and Roxbury. By focusing on the way that cool pose gets enacted through "showdowns," a symbolic transaction Malcolm and the other street hustlers in The Autobiography use to bolster their "masculinity," this essay supplements the performative model of gender with a consideration of the ways that "masculinity" also involves exchanges of gender power.

A photo essay of the former French colony of Senegal emphasizes the importance of ownership of economic resources. Attention is given to Islamic religious teachers charged with educating & feeding children who elect to pad their own pockets by sending boys out to beg in the streets. Other issues highlighted include the cycle of poverty that impedes ownership; efforts of non-governmental agencies to help children; the informal economy engaged in by women; & the importance of cultural & religious traditions in this predominantly Muslim country. This article considers Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's fervent holocaust denial in light of Iranian foreign policy & geopolitical strategy. Additionally, it shows the strange alliance between Eastern Muslim leaders & Western white supremacists such as David Duke that holocaust denial has allowed. The author finds that Ahmadinejad's holocaust denial resonates with the much of the Arab & non-Arab Middle East who fear US & Israeli foreign policy. L'analyse des modes de production des votes employés par les Frères musulmans lors des dernières élections législatives montre que ceux-ci s'inscrivent dans le cadre commun de la pratique électorale en Egypte: la mobilisation frériste suit en effet les logiques clientélistes qui caractérisent l'élection d'un député en Egypte, et elle se rapproche en cela des pratiques électorales des candidats du Parti national démocratique. In this article, multilevel latent class analysis is used to examine the structure of heavy alcohol use. A model with three latent classes (types) of people fits the data well: those who seldom suffer major consequences from heavy drinking, those who typically suffer only a small number of major consequences, and those who suffer serious consequences in a large number of areas of their lives. Individuals in the first class tend to be older, female, with domestic partners, more highly educated, employed, and either Catholic, Muslim, or Baptist.

The book begins by looking at the development of democracy in Islamic countries in both the Arab and non-Arab world. One global trend that has become evident following the Cold War, as Azra points out, has been the gradual increase in the numbers of countries that have adopted democracy. This phenomenon is not exclusive to Muslim countries. National elections in the Philippines took place on May 10, 2004, providing incumbent President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo with a six-year electoral mandate and control of both houses of Congress and most of the local governmental positions. However, the Arroyo administration faced a worsening budget deficit and debt crisis, increased incidence of hunger and poverty, pervasive corruption scandals in the military, inconclusive peace negotiations with communist guerrillas and Muslim separatists, and an unexpected twist in the country's relations with the United States, provoked by a crisis in the Philippines' involvement in Iraq.

Thousands of books have been written on Yugoslavia's dissolution and the wars that followed in the 1990s. Most of them, however, deal with relations among the main ethno-nations of Yugoslavia, i.e., Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Bosniaks (Muslims), Montenegrins, Macedonians and Albanians, and the effects on them of the dissolution and wars. Hungarians and Italians of Yugoslavia also suffered, and the wars affected their destiny; but these peoples have rarely been mentioned in the context of this history. It is the aim of this article to fill the gap.

Der Beitrag liefert einen Einblick in die islamische Philanthropie, die eine lange Tradition des institutionalisierten Schenkens hat und eng mit den islamischen Ländern und ihren Kulturen verwurzelt ist. Dabei lassen sich folgende Formen des islamischen Schenkens unterscheiden: (1) Zakat, eine obligatorische Form des Schenkens für alle Muslime gemäß der islamischen Scharia zwecks Reinigung; (2) sadaqa ist eine freiwillige Schenkung, um dadurch Gott näher zu kommen; (3) heba sind Geschenke aus dem Eigentum oder Besitz, die seitens einer Person anderen Menschen während ihres Lebens zur Verfügung gestellt werden; (4) waqf ist ein System, das auf die Idee des institutionalisierten Schenkens zurückgeht, um Nachhaltigkeit zu garantieren; (5) Formen von awqaf, Stiftungen zur Errichtung und Erhaltung von Moscheen und religiösen Schulen. Zusammenfassend lässt sich feststellen, das die Traditionen des Schenkens im Islam innerhalb der islamischen Gesellschaften sehr präsent sind, insbesondere durch die Praktiken des zakat und sadaqa.
