"Hugh Clegg (1898-1979) was among the most notable Mississippi historical figures during the 1920s through the 1960s. Born in Mathiston, Mississippi, he was a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1926 to 1954, during which time he rose to the top leadership and worked directly under Director J. Edgar Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson. In his second career, as executive assistant to Chancellor J.D. Williams at the University of Mississippi from 1954 to 1969, he was in a top leadership position before and during the civil rights crises in the State of Mississippi and at Ole Miss. While with the Bureau, Clegg's responsibilities included leading the search for many of the most dangerous gangsters in the country, including John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, the Barker gang, and Alvin Karpis. He established the FBI's National Training Academy and coordinated the hunt for atom bomb spy Harry Gold, collaborator with German spy Emil Klaus Fuchs. He was sent to England by Director Hoover prior to the outbreak of World War II to study British intelligence agencies. A close friend of many of the leading federal and state elected officials and of members of the US Supreme Court, Clegg was well known to many in power. At the University of Mississippi he was the prime contact between the university and the federal government during the desegregation crises of Clennon King and James Meredith. He was also assigned the lead role in combating the efforts of Mississippi politicians to discredit and remove faculty members when scholars were thought 'too liberal' and therefore a threat to the state. Through a Freedom of Information request from the FBI, author Ronald F. Borne obtained thousands of pertinent documents. In addition, he mined Clegg's oral history and an unpublished book manuscript. Borne interviewed close relations, colleagues, and friends to reveal a portrait of a distinguished, loyal man who significantly shaped the training procedures for the FBI and then mediated the University of Mississippi's conflicts with both state officials and the federal government"--

This book approached water and sanitation as an African gender and human rights issue. Empirical case studies from Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe show how coexisting international, national and local regulations of water and sanitation respond to the ways in which different groups of rural and urban women gain access to water for personal, domestic and livelihood purposes. The authors, who are lawyers, sociologists, political scientists and anthropologists, explore how women cope in contexts where they lack secure rights, and participation in water governance institutions, formal and informal. The research shows how women - as producers of family food - rely on water from multiple sources that are governed by community based norms and institutions which recognise the right to water for livelihood. How these 'common pool water resources' - due to protection gaps in both international and national law - are threatened by large-scale development and commercialisation initiatives, facilitated through national permit systems, is a key concern. The studies demonstrate that existing water governance structures lack mechanisms which make them accountable to poor and vulnerable water users on the ground, most importantly women. The findings thus underscore the need to intensify measures to hold states accountable, not just in water services provision, but in assuring the basic human right to clean drinking water and sanitation; and also to protect water for livelihoods.

Ziel des Forschungsvorhabens war, das in einer vorangegangenen Studie entwickelte CSR-Evaluierungs- und Steuerungsinstrument (Erfassung CSR-Aufwand anhand von Maßnahmekatalogen) theoretisch-konzeptionell zu schärfen, empirisch tiefer zu überprüfen und für die Praxis zu operationalisieren. Theoretisch-konzeptionell wurde das CSR-Evaluierungs- und Steuerungsinstrument unter anderem dahingehend angepasst, dass zu einzelnen CSR-Kategorien ("Mitarbeiter", "Partner", "Kunden", "Gesellschaft" und "Kapitalgeber") Beispiele, Prüfkriterien und Hinweise ergänzt wurden. Ein Ergebnis der empirischen Überprüfung des Instruments ist, dass die Daten als Grundlage zur Ermittlung einer CSR-Quote (= CSR-Aufwand/Umsatz) in Unternehmen nicht, beziehungsweise nicht für alle Stakeholdergruppen gleich verfügbar sind und teils nur mit hohem Aufwand beschafft werden können. Die Studie sieht als eine praktische Einsatzmöglichkeit des CSR-Evaluierungs- und Steuerungsinstruments an, etablierte Instrumente der Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung (z.B. Richtlinien der Global Reporting Initiative) zu ergänzen.

This publication contains the results of the research companies and expert analysis on the impact of cross-border cooperation on the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises, thereby strengthening development processes in the peripheral regions. The research was conducted within the framework of the project "Development of cross-border economic co-operation subregion Bialystok-Suwalki and Grodno region of Belarus and subregion Przemysl and Krosno with Transcarpathian Oblast in Ukraine" co-financed by the European Union under the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2007-2013.
