A historical inquiry into the sources of contemporary Polish populism, drawing on anthropological fieldwork conducted in 1978/79. Since the late nineteenth century the Polish populist movement has been anticommunist, anticapitalist, antistate, & oriented toward preservation of traditional modes of production & lifestyles, failing to recognize the significance of stratification among peasants. Socialist land reform in the post-WWII period did not address persisting inequalities; capitalization of farming & pauperization of large numbers of peasants were complicated with the interference of local party bureaucracies. The newly constituted Polish Peasant Party (1989) opposes socialism & emphasizes agrarianism & Christian moral principles. The contemporary reinvention of tradition among rural inhabitants owes its popularity to their presumed independence from the state & corporate influence. It is argued that as soon as other social groups realize that they have no more control over their life than under state socialism, populist ideologies will start to fade. 17 References. A. Devic

This book addresses positive peace. In his introduction, Arun Gandhi, fifth grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, asks, "For generations human beings have strived to attain peace, but with little or no success. Why is peace so illusive?" Twelve philosophers and educators suggest creatively and pragmatically that peace education has a large part of play in meeting the challenge. --Book Jacket.
; A riot of students against their rector occurred at the College of Concepción del Uruguay in 1864 is taken as focus to study the organization of national schools in Argentina in the nineteenth century. In addition to allude to historiographical issues and the context in which the institution is located, describing the tumult seeks to address the ways in which the national state, the provincial government and the educational community articulated in building institutions. ; Fil: Bustamante Vismara, José Manuel Laureano. In doing so, it offers novel insights into how liberal democratic education can be amended, extended or qualified to address the special challenges of the current political moment

The Gurungs have historical attachment with British Gurkha recruitment and some special social values about it have been developed. So, lahure practice has been developed as a culture among them. This research has tried to analyze the impact of British Gurkha recruitment on the higher education of Gurung young men. The social value of being a lahure and an educated professional in the Gurung community is a major discourse of the study. The study is based on the field work carried out in Pokhara Sub-metropolis. It is basically qualitative in nature and interview was adopted as the main tool to collect the necessary information. Being a lahure is a matter of great craze among the Gurung youths. The socio-cultural circumstances also encourage them to try for recruitment. There is high social value of being a lahure in the Gurung community in contrast with getting higher education. The educational attainment of the Gurung youths is inter-related with these social values. It has an adverse effect on the educational status of the Gurung youths. The educational achievement of the Gurung community would have been far better if the community was not dominated by the pro-lahure culture.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/dsaj.v5i0.6361Dhaulagiri Journal of Sociology and Anthropology Vol. 5, 2011: 143-70

AbstractThe debate on whether Mexican immigrants are positively or negatively selected on education has been limited by studying immigrants in data collected only from the sending or the destination country. Using nationally representative data from Mexico that tracked migrants to the United States prospectively, we examine the education selectivity of Mexicans who immigrated to the United States from 2002 to 2005. We find that using reports of migration by remaining household members and proxy substitution of migration education underestimates migrant selectivity. Migrant men and women were positively selected within households and rural municipalities of origin but negatively selected from the national educational distribution. Differences in selectivity by size of place, as well as when considering the local or national context, means that the answer of whether immigrants are positively or negatively selected on education depends on the context considered.
