Studies in international political economy (IPE) that use survey-response data sets and survey (or field) experiments have grown dramatically in recent years. New developments in survey and experimental methodology have arguably influenced IPE scholars not only to think more deeply about the microfoundations of the preferences, attitudes, and political behavior of key IPE actors but also to use survey or experimental methods to test causal claims and predictions. Yet the reasons for the rapid growth in survey and experimental methods in IPE are more multifaceted. We therefore seek to answer the following three pertinent questions in the introduction. First, what are the main substantive puzzles and issue-areas that IPE scholars analyze via survey and experimental methods in their research? Second, what are the main methodological advantages and drawbacks from using survey and experimental methods in IPE? Third, what are the key substantive theoretical and empirical insights that scholars have learned from recent research in IPE that employs either survey or experimental methods (or both)? In addition to answering these questions here, we also provide a summary of each article included in the special issue. The introduction concludes with a road map for future studies on survey and experimental research in IPE.(International Interactions (London)/ FUB)

The purpose of this book is to examine the feasibility, evolution, and future of international linkages, such as environmental pacts and agreements, military alliances, the World Health Organization, the Strategic Arms Limitation treaties, and energy power pools. International interactions involving weather modification, outer-space exploitation, and the oceans are also investigated. The analyses of the book conceptualize and examine international linkages rather than present a utopian view of world governments.

Calls for the development of alternatives to neoclassical economics & the rational choice paradigm to prevent their further colonization of the social sciences in general & international relations & political economics in particular. Criticisms of rational choice theory include its assumption of rationality & informed choice, its similarities to nineteenth-century social Darwinism, its stifling of theoretical diversity & empirical study, & its exclusion of the communitarian & moral aspects of human behavior. An alternative to the rational choice explanation of how national & international political & socioeconomic systems behave is suggested that draws on the institutionalist tradition in economics & rejects the assumption of the rational economic man. Socially constructed institutions rather than individuals are taken as the basic units of analysis. This approach acknowledges that state power & routine weigh on behavior & that completely free markets do not exist. 22 References. E. Blackwell

In an analysis of the relationship between foreign economic policy & international investment interests, it is hypothesized that nation-states are the primary players, & that a country's international investment position affects its international economic preferences in ways that can be understood & predicted; also, various domestic sectors with interests related to their international investment positions compete for national policy priority. The stages of capital accumulation are described, with various examples from European countries & the US, both post-WWI & -WWII. Relationships between creditor & debtor countries are discussed, with a focus on domestic policies as a driving force. It is argued that creditor status may be the result of historical conditions, such as resource endowments, culturally determined savings potential, or strategic considerations. 1 Table, 43 References.
