Anti-gender actors in East-Central Europe (ECE) too claim that gender is an ideological colonization. In this article, in contrasting these accusations with actually existing power relations of the global and European gender architecture, I discuss whether they are – at least to some extent – based on social realities. Neither anti-gender campaigns nor the rise of illiberal forces are ECE phenomena per se and should not be treated as such. However, the relevance of the geopolitical embeddedness of gender equality policies, of gender studies and of feminist and LGBT politics needs to be analysed thoroughly in order to better understand the right-wing discourse. This paper offers a theoretical explanation, based on existing empirical studies and critical theoretical literature. Focussing on the four Visegrád countries, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, it attempts to demonstrate the specific drivers of the anti-gender mobilization in this region and argues that anti-gender discourse is a right-wing language of resistance against existing material and symbolic East-West inequalities in Europe.

Esta es la versión post-print (con los comentarios de revisores/editores) del artículo. ; In this article we center the attention on LGBT organizations in Spain. We discuss the emergence, evolution and claims of this social movement. The political associations and groups that advocate lesbian, gay and transsexual rights are presented as the voice of sexual communities and peoples. Accordingly, they are treated as a key social and political actor that links the desires and needs of grass-root non heterosexual peoples with the higher spheres of institutions, politics and the law. The article builds on qualitative data on protesting, claims-making and mobilization to account for the transformation of a major section of the Spanish LGBT movement into a defender of human rights and equality. This is presented as the consequence of internal balances of power, and also as a cause of the de-sexualisation of the claims brought before the State by sexual communities in Spain.

AbstractReligious affiliation and participation are thought to work as mobilizing structures through which religious participants accrue organizational and psychological resources, which augment political participation. Given the rejection of homosexuality by many denominations, do religious LGBT people actually accrue more positive psychological resources, and are the positive effects of religiosity on political participation mitigated when belief conflicts with identity? Informed by resource mobilization theory, the identity-threat model of stigmatization, and an intersectional approach, I conduct secondary analyses of two survey data sets of LGBT people. The results suggest that religiosity is associated with increased political participation among LGBT people; however, religious LGBT people exhibit weaker psychological association with the LGBT community and are "out" to fewer people. Furthermore, political participation is less likely among those who experience conflict between their religion and sexuality and among Evangelical Christians.

Deborah Gould's volume is a beautifully written account of direct-action AIDS activism in the United States from its emergence in the mid-1980s through its decline in the early 1990s. The story of ACT UP, the central focus of the work, illuminates the complex history of both the AIDS epidemic and the political dynamics of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities at a key moment of transition. Founded during the conservative backlash of the Reagan era and active through the conservative turn in LGBT politics of the early Clinton years (with the prioritization of questions like military service), the group's confrontational tactics, radical discourse, and political successes prove something of an anomaly. Explaining this anomaly is Gould's central concern, and in doing so, she offers a compelling argument for the importance of addressing affect and emotion in the study of social movements, providing a carefully nuanced conceptual framework to do so.

El artículo propone, a partir del estudio de Hawaii de Marco Berger (2013) y Esteros de Papu Curotto (2016), elaborar sobre las tensiones entre el llamado Nuevo Cine Argentino y el cine de temática LGBT en Argentina. Por un lado, explora las disyunciones entre el modo en que se narran las historias de amor como universales y la temporalidad como principio ordenador de los materiales, focalizando en la figura de los "zombies" o "muertos vivos". Por otro, sitúa esas narraciones en el marco de los cambios en las políticas de igualdad en nuestro país de los últimos 15 años. ; The article proposes, departing from the study of Marco Berger´s Hawaii (2013) and Papu Curotto´s Esteros (2016), to reflect on the tensions between the so called New Argentine Cinema and the LGBT cinema in Argentina. On the one hand, I explore the disjunctions between the narration of love stories and the temporality as an structuring principle, focusing on the figure of "zombies" and "the dead alive".
