"There are some 150 disgusted young men at Selfridge Field. They are members of Squadron D, and the squadron has a very concrete reason for hatred of Spanish influenza. Incidentally 150 Detroit girls are just as vexed. The squadron had planned a dance. It was to be the very top notch of a dance, and was going to "knock the spots" off the dance given by the gunners or any other military organization. It was going to be so full of music, lights, flowers and what the old-fashioned call "the beauty and chivalry" of this section of the state, that it would be talked about after the war was forgotten. The 150 girls had all accepted invitations, florists had prepared their choicest buds, Finsel's orchestra had added an extra musician or two, the Arcadia had prepared for an extra polish on its floors and— Selfridge Field was put under quarantine. Not a member of the squadron can attend its own dance, not a pretty girl attached to the squadron's membership can go, and there is $600 already spent. The boys had planned, dreamed and visioned this dance from the first moment. Instead of having a nice little sum to put aside as a comfort fund for the squadron's needs it looked as if it were going in debt $600. There was just one thing to do. Friends of the boys in Squadron D have announced that the dance is going to be given anyway, even if the hosts cannot be there. It is scheduled for Tuesday evening and on that date Arcadia will be open for the official dance. The public is asked to help by attending, and even if the boys cannot be there, most of them being busy fighting little microbes, the fund is needed just the same, the music and light and flowers will be there. One can get a perfectly good ticket for door for 50 cents." ; Newspaper article ; 8

Policy-makers have long been concerned with the quality of local political leadership and have often resorted to institutional reform to try to improve political leadership. This paper looks at a specific and neglected facet of the political management reforms that have been implemented in English local government over the last decade: the tenure and turnover of cabinet members. The tenure of top politicians may be an important influence on the performance of local government particularly when political management is designed to favour individualised leadership. On the one hand, excessively short tenures for top politicians may damage the ability of governments to develop strategic plans and ensure they are implemented while on the other hand the risk of loss of office is central to political accountability and excessively long tenures may be indicative of an insulated and unresponsive elite. While some research attention has been paid to the tenures of leaders of councils in England there is little systematic information about the tenure of cabinet members. This paper discusses the relevance of cabinet stability and provides an overview of recent experience in England.

During the current political crisis in Thailand, people hold various political standpoints. Despite these different stances, the goal for many of these differences remains the same, namely, a just society. The research Translated Plays as a Force for Social Justice is an attempt to advocate the role of literature in creating social justice. The purpose of the research is to study issues of social justice in translated plays and to suggest ways in which the Thai academic community and Thai society can use plays to advocate social justice. This research studies translations of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Bertolt Brecht's Der gute Mensch von Sezuan, Jean Anouilh's Antigone and Arthur Miller's The Crucible. The study finds that these plays pose challenging questions which help raise an awareness of the importance of social justice. Critics and theatre practitioners in the West have created a number of works on these plays that help advance social justice. Nonetheless, the issues of social justice in these plays are often ignored by Thai critics and theater practitioners and, because of this, some of them unintentionally offer an interpretation or a production, which is not in line with the concept of social justice.
