Science and technology, as rational approaches to problem solving, are driving forces in the promotion of democracy at home and abroad. Science based decision-making is increasingly global as countries share technology, research results, and engage in joint studies on common problems. The widening rift between global wealth and poverty diminishes for many the opportunity for exposure to science, technology and social science based decision-making on issues that directly affect them. This paper outlines a model for democratizing science by utilizing the interactive tools of the social sciences in a process that enables information-marginalized people to engage with the language, methods and results of social science for purposes of community empowerment and voice in science policy. The paper offers examples of approaches to implementation, citing various forms of research partnerships with communities, and discusses challenges including ethical considerations, the conflict between "local" and science-based knowledges and power differentials in practice.

SECONDLY, FIVE BEHAVIORAL DEFINITIONS OF POWER BY SUCH SCHOLARS AS CARTWRIGHT, DAHL, LASSWELL AND KAPLAN, MARCH, AND SIMON ARE EXAMINED TO ILLUSTRATE THE DIVERSITY OF DEFINITIONS OF POWER IN THE DISCIPLINE OF POLITICAL SCIENCE.

An assessment of the impact of social science on the formulation of public policy in liberal-democratic societies. As the postwar expansion became firmly entrenched in the 1950s & 1960s, many liberal-democratic states began to use social research for a number of policy purposes. In Europe, this trend resulted from the social measures & planning introduced by political reform coalitions who used social research to inform their policy choices after gaining power. Social scientists constituted a significant part of these coalitions & were able to gain access to resources & augment the role of social science in policy formulation. These developments were replicated in North America & contributed to the prestige & political significance of social science. The discussion is placed within the larger context of the social & political roles of intellectuals. AA

Role playing is increasingly used in European Studies and political science, to foster students' understanding of social science theories. Generally, role playing is only done by students. Not so in Theoretical Theatre, a teaching innovation which puts the onus on teachers to act. In our performances, teachers embody competing theories and enact dramatic scenarios in front of, and in collaboration with, their student audience. We explain how we developed Theoretical Theatre and contextualise it in the pedagogical literature of games and simulations, and of Drama In Education. We reflect on our experience of performing across four modules since 2012, and on our students' feedback, to discuss three key themes emerging from our practice: making theory more interesting and engaging, easier to understand and apply; and changing classroom dynamics and engagement. We outline the challenges and opportunities in sustaining this teaching method and transferring it to other settings and disciplines.

Interest in relations between knowledge, power, and space has a long tradition in a range of disciplines, but it was reinvigorated in the last two decades through critical engagement with Foucault and Gramsci. In this volume, Harold D. Lasswell collaborates with a brilliant young philosopher, Abraham Kaplan, to formulate basic theoretical concepts and hypotheses of political science, providing a framework for further inquiry into the political process. This is a classic book of political theory written by two of the most influential social scientists of the twentieth century. The authors find their subject matter in interpersonal relations, not abstract institutions or organizations, and their analysis of power is related to human values. They argue that revolution is apart of the political process, and ideology has a role in political affairs. The importance of class, both as social fact and social symbol, is reflected in their detailed analysis, and emphasis on merit rather than rank, skill rather than status, as keystones of democratic rule. The authors note that power is only one of the values and instruments manifested in interpersonal relations; it cannot be understood in abstraction from other values. Lasswell and Kaplan call for the replacement of "power politics," both in theory and in practice, by a conception in which attention is focused on the human consequences of power as the major concern of both political thought and political action.
