Ausgehend von der im Januar 2001 vom französischen Parlament verabschiedeten Resolution, den Genozid an den Armeniern von 1915 öffentlich anzuerkennen, zeigt der Autor Unterschiede in der westlichen und türkischen Geschichtsschreibung über die Situation der Armenier im Osmanischen Reich auf. Während das Archivmaterial über europäische Beziehungen mit dem Osmanischen Reich zugänglich ist, hat die Türkei ihre Archive noch nicht vollständig geöffnet. Der Genozid an den Armeniern, schließt der Autor, müsse deshalb mit Vorsicht beurteilt werden. Wie er anhand einiger Fälle zeigt, war er oft mehr Angelegenheit der politischen Propaganda als der kritischen Geschichtsschreibung. (DÜI-Mjr)

Auf dem Hintergrund einer veränderten Blickrichtung auf islamische Identifikationsformen der in Deutschland lebenden Muslime geht es im vorliegenden Beitrag um eine vergleichende Auseinandersetzung mit den Ergebnissen von vier qualitativen Studien (Karasoglu-Aydin, Klinkhammer, Frese und Nökel). Ziel ist es, die deutlich werdenden Transformationen muslimischer Religiosität in Deutschland in ihrer Bedeutung für die sozialen Beziehungen in der Bundesrepublik herauszuarbeiten und gleichzeitig nach möglichen neuen Forschungsperspektiven zu fragen. Alle vier Autoren betonen, dass die Identifikationen mit dem Islam unter jungen Erwachsenen ein Ausdruck für die Inklusion in den gesellschaftlichen Alltag der Bundesrepublik sind und nicht etwa ein Rückzug aus der Gesellschaft oder ein Verhaftet-Sein in ethnischen Traditionen. Gleichzeitig brechen durch zunehmende Individualisierung und Pluralisierung religiöse Dogmen und Rituale auf, was auch zu einer Vervielfältigung des Angebots an islamischen Organisationen und Vereinen führt. Die Vielfalt der Identifikationsformen mit dem Islam in den vorgestellten Monographien fordert entsprechend dazu auf, diesbezügliche weitergehende Forschungsfragen zu entwickeln, die sich auf das Verhältnis zwischen individuellen Islamität und islamischer Vergemeinschaftung beziehen und sich mit den Implikationen für den Religionsbegriff im allgemeinen und das Islamverständnis im besonderen befassen. Russians say that there is a defeat in every victory and a victory in every defeat. On 16 September 1999, in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, combined forces of civilian militias, police, and Russian federal troops defeated insurgent militants from Chechnya who intended to establish an independent Islamic state in the Northeast Caucasus which would have united Chechnya with Dagestan and Ingushetia. On that same date the Dagestan People's Assembly enacted legislation intended to thwart future Islamic extremism by awarding official political status to the Spiritual Directorate of the Muslims of Dagestan (DUMD).

Faced by the continued threat of suicide bombers and other acts of terrorism, Professor Masters argues that we need a more robust and cogent policy debate about the two primary security strategies: deterrence and pre-emption. Masters suggests that the Bush administration's apparent emphasis on a pre-emptive strategy will not work under circumstances that make martyrdom an appealing choice for terrorists. Contemporary theories of animal evolution indicate that self-sacrifice is more likely in relatively poor societies with high birth rates and low life expectancy, as exists in most of the Muslim states.

"In den christlich geprägten Demokratien des Westens, aber keineswegs nur dort, sind die religionspolitischen Verhältnisse in Bewegung geraten. Sie sehen sich Forderungen nach einer Korrektur, Revision oder gar Neuverhandlung gegenüber. Davon sind nicht allein die Demokratien Europas mit ihren in der Regel hergebrachten asymmetrischen Religionsverfassungen betroffen, wo religiöse Minderheiten, vor allem Muslime, auf ihren Status als gleiche Bürger auch in der Religionsverfassung drängen. Denn auch das bislang in politischer Theorie wie Öffentlichkeit hegemoniale Prinzip einer strikten Trennung von Religion und Öffentlichkeit sieht sich in den Ländern, die es wie die USA, Frankreich oder die Türkei zur Grundlage ihrer Religionspolitik gemacht haben, der Kritik ausgesetzt. Visible Islam in Modern Turkey by Adil Özdemir and Kenneth Frank is an
objective, readable handbook of Islamic worship practices. The authors offer an introduction to
the basics of Muslim worship in Turkey and to expressions of faith and identity, prayer,
alms-giving, the fast, and the pilgrimage to Mecca. Along with some history behind the practices,
they also present their combined interpretations of the present religious climate. This last issue
lifts parts of the book above the level of general guide to that of social commentary, as the
authors point out the tensions between secular and non-secular worldviews.

Ethnic conflict is not—because there are no ethnic groups in conflict. This is the main conclusion of a comparison of so-called "ethnic conflicts" in the Balkans and in colonial India. A comparison of Muslim nation building in these two regions provides several valuable insights that go far beyond the specific cases. Thus far, there have been many hints in the literature on similarities between Bosnia and Pakistan or the Balkans and the Indian subcontinent as a whole. But there have been no systematic comparisons, though many parallels emerge when we look more closely.

The conclusion rejects Third Worldist cultural relativism, & supports many Muslim intellectuals in their assertion that an autonomous civil society distinct from state & clerical authority can be compatible with Islam.
