The release of trailer of 'Innocence of Muslims' generated a huge debate on free speech, hate speech and the representation of the Muslims and Islam in the Western media. This paper investigates these issues in detail by taking instances from the mainstream US print media. Some other interesting debates in the mass media like the identification of the filmmaker and denigration of the Muslims and Islam in historical context have also been undertaken in the paper. Discourse theory and social construction of reality by Schutz (1976) and Berger and Luckmann (1991) have been applied as theoretical framework to evaluate the relationship between mass media and social construction of reality, and to see as how the US mass media constructed the reality about the movie (trailer). Three major aspects were selected for analysis; viz., filmmaker(s) and their associates, issues concerning freedom of speech and expression, and the representation of the Muslims' protesting against the YouTube clip and the ensuing violence in some Muslim countries.
ADAM FERGUSON WAS ONE OF SEVERAL MORAL PHILOSOPHERS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT, A PERIOD APTLY DESCRIBED AS ONE OF "REMARKABLE EFFLORESCENCE." THE WORKS OF FERGUSON AND HIS FELLOW SCOTSMEN-ADAM SMITH, DAVID HUME, DUGALD STEWART, LORD KAMES, FRANCIS HUTCHESON AND THOMAS REID-WERE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED, SERIOUSLY READ, AND, VIGOROUSLY DEBATE DURING THE LAST QUARTER OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTION OF THIS SCOTISH SCHOOL TO THE HISTORY OF POLITICAL THINKING WAS THE REFINEMENT OF THE IDEA OF COMMERCIAL REPUBLICIANISM, THE SYNTHESIS OF MODERN NOTIONS OF POLITY AND

AbstractCharter schools enjoy support among Republican and Democratic lawmakers in states and Congress, but little research has examined their support among the electorate. We take advantage of Washington's 2012 charter school ballot initiative—the first voter-approved charter initiative in the United States—to shed light on the politics of school choice at the mass level. Because in-depth, individual-level voter data are often unavailable in state-level elections, we leverage extensive precinct- and district-level data to examine patterns of support and opposition toward the charter school initiative, focusing on how partisanship, ideology, and demographic factors serve to unify or divide voters. Our analysis reveals that the coalition of supporters cut across usual partisan and demographic cleavages, producing somewhat strange bedfellows. This finding has important implications for the strategies advocacy groups may consider as they seek to expand or limit school choice programs via ballot initiatives as opposed to the statehouse, and provides suggestive evidence regarding the evolving shapers of voter support for school choice and ballot initiatives more generally.
What does 'anticapitalism' really mean for the politics and culture of the twenty-first century? Anticapitalism is an idea which, despite going global, remains rooted in the local, persisting as a loose collection of grassroots movements and actions. Anticapitalism needs to develop a coherent and cohering philosophy, something which cultural theory and the intellectual legacy of the New Left can help to provide, notably through the work of key radical thinkers, such as Ernesto Laclau, Stuart Hall, Antonio Negri, Gilles Deleuze and Judith Butler.
Anticapitalism and Culture argues that there is a strong relationship between the radical tradition of cultural studies and the new political movements which try to resist corporate globalization. Indeed, the two need each other: whilst theory can shape and direct the huge diversity of anticapitalist activism, the energy and sheer political engagement of the anticapitalist movement can breathe new life into cultural studies.Anticapitalism is an idea which, despite going global, remains rooted in the local, persisting as a loose collection of grassroots movements and actions. POLITICAL SCIENCE HAS IGNORED MANY CRITICAL ASPECTS OF THE 'LEISURE CULTURE'. TO REMEDY THIS, A NEW PERSPECTIVE IN POLITICAL STUDIES SHOULD BE DEVELOPED. THE LEISURE CULTURE HAS A POWERFUL EFFECT ON THE POLITICAL CULTURE THROUGH THE SUPPORT OFFERED FOR POLITICAL AIMS, WHILE GOVERNMENT POLICIES GREATLY AFFECT THE LEISURE CULTURE. THE MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICS & CULTURE INCLUDE: (1) RECIPROCAL INTERACTION BETWEEN POLITICS & CULTURE, (2) CULTURAL POLICY, CLASS, & DISSENT, & (3) AN INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT. TO DEVELOP A POLITICAL SCIENCE THAT ENCOMPASSES BOTH POLITICS & CULTURE, THE DISCIPLINE SHOULD BE STUDIED LESS & THE CULTURE MORE. 1 FIGURE. MODIFIED AUTHOR'S SUMMARY.
