Painting the page in the age of print: Central European manuscript illumination of the fifteenth century
In: Text - image - context 4
In: Studies and texts 208
Zusammenfassung: "The history of the book in the fifteenth century is especially associated in German-speaking countries with Gutenberg's invention of printing with movable type. Over a century of scholarship has tended, often in rather gratuitous fashion, to dismiss the majority of illuminated manuscripts produced in central Europe between around 1400 and the Reformation as mediocre manifestations of a culture in decline. This book--originally published in German to accompany a series of exhibitions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland from 2015 to 2017--was written to challenge these prejudices and the weight of tradition which they represent. It contains four wide-ranging art historical essays which for the first time give an overview of fifteenth-century illumination in Central Europe."--(Provided by publisher.)

Decriminalizing domestic violence: a balanced policy approach to intimate partner violence
In: Gender and justice 7
"Decriminalizing Domestic Violence asks the crucial, yet often ignored, question of why and how the criminal legal system has become the primary response to intimate partner violence in the United States. It introduces readers, both new and well versed in the subject, to the ways in which the criminal justice system harms rather than helps those who are subjected to abuse and violence in their homes and communities. The book examines how mandatory arrests, no-drop prosecutions, zero-tolerance public housing policies, and the ever-growing collateral consequences of a criminal record can mean that vast amounts of social, legal, and financial resources are diverted into a criminal justice apparatus that is ultimately unable to deliver justice or safety to victims, or to prevent domestic violence to begin with. Envisioned for both courses and research topics in domestic violence, family violence, gender and law, sociology of law, and others, the book challenges readers to view intimate partner violence not as a criminal justice concern but as an economic, public health, community, and human rights problem. At a moment when we are examining our national addiction to punishment, Decriminalizing Domestic Violence offers a thoughtful, pragmatic roadmap to real domestic violence reform"--Provided by publisher

When jihadi ideology meets social media
In: Palgrave Pivot
"This book is designed to provide specialists, spectators, and students with a brief and engaging exploration of media usage by radical groups and the laws regulating these grey areas of Jihadi propaganda activities. The authors investigate the use of religion to advance political agendas and the legal challenges involved with balancing regulation with free speech rights. The project also examines the reasons behind the limited success of leading initiatives to curb the surge of online extreme speech, such as Google's 'Redirect Method' or the U.S. State Department's campaign called 'Think Again.' The volume concludes by outlining a number of promising technical approaches that can potently empower tech companies to reduce religious extremist groups' presence and impact on social media."--

Conflict resolution and creation of a security community in the Gulf region
In: The Gulf Research Centre Book Series
"The bitter confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Iran is not only stoking conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, but now threatens the stability, security and well-being of the whole Gulf region. All the major global powers have significant interests in this area, and the pursuit of these interests adds further layers of division and conflict. This book goes to the heart of this issue, examining the critical modalities whereby the "Gulf Cold War" can be brought to an end. What is needed, the contributors argue, is the creation of a security community among the states of the Gulf. The processes through which this could be achieved are carefully examined. All those interested in the future and well-being of the Gulf region should give consideration to the perspectives advanced." (Publisher's description)
