Recently, leftist & feminist theorists have proposed two notions as displacements or supercessions of the earlier formalist-elitist definition of postmodernism. In the set proposed by leftists & feminists within the art world, postmodernism as a progressive aesthetic practice involves constructing works that attack traditional bourgeois & masculine notions of narrative & representation, & which seek to deconstruct the concept of the (white, M) centered self. For many Left theorists beyond the art world, however, postmodernism operates as a much larger & more negative period concept for the dominant way of life under the sway of multinational capital within the developed world. While these two notions are contradictory, there has been no debate within Left &/or feminist cultural theory over how to resolve the conceptions. It is suggested that the absence of debate may best be read as itself a symptom of the failure of the Left & feminist movements to find a way past both Leninist & social-democratic strategies for radical change, to some new model for a transformed & transformative Left-feminist public sphere.
