Abstract This study explored the influence of parental socialisation, relative to that from crucial dispositions of the offspring and other socialisation agents, on the offspring's intentions to engage in radical protest actions in Hong Kong, a city that has been experiencing periodical socio-political upheavals and generational rifts over politics. A sample of 666 university students, aged eighteen to twenty-five years, from eight universities in Hong Kong completed the survey. Employing hierarchical regression analysis, the results revealed that participation in ritual protests among fathers positively associated with radicalism intentions. With the introduction of a broader group of socialisation agents, however, its effect on the dependent variable became statistically non-significant. Rather, peer influence and media consumption positively associated with radicalism intentions, whilst family discussions about politics negatively associated with such intentions. After including the respondents' political characteristics in the final model, which accounted for the greatest variance in the dependent variable, no variables reflecting influences from the household remained statistically significant. Apart from peer influence and media consumption, the respondents' past histories of activism and radicalism and his/her political sympathies over the self-determination stance positively associated with radicalism intentions. In the light of the findings, implications for future studies and social work practice are discussed.
Radicalism does not only revolve around religious ideology, but has also been incarnated in social, political and cultural life. That is, any ideology or thought that has a negative impact (effect) causes a person to become militant and fanaticism can be included in radicalism. Religious radicalism has recently emerged, inviting someone to adapt to other people. This concerns the practice of life (mu'amalah) and worship (ubudiyah), especially regarding the different views on their religion. Different interpretations see that religious law is exacerbated by selfish reasons that lead to the breakdown of harmony in society. What is considered not in accordance with the same understanding, is considered to deviate from the true teachings of Islam. Later, many influential people asked the person to return to the true religious teachings. He views hat religious teachings must deviate from the practice of life. Unfortunately, this true teaching is only based on their own understanding. For him, the teachings he received were considered pure and represented the true and legitimate teachings of Islam. If things like this continue, then surely the internal division of religious communities will be wide open and it turns out that the mass organization movement that smells of radicalism in the name of religion does not only happen to Islam, but also to others. religion.
This study presents a pseudo reality about terrorism and radicalism toward Islamic Boarding Schools which is constructed by Jawa Pos.com, Kompas.com, and Republika.co.id during 2016. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal the practice of journalism media power relations and encourage a critical movement in addressing media construction that preach the issue of terrorism and radicalism against the boarding school. This study employed a critical paradigm with critical discourse analysis (CDA) of Norman Fairclough model through three levels of analysis, ie, news texts description through critical language analysis, subjective interpretation of the researcher against the discourse practice of the three cyber media, and the critical explanation of the sociocultural practice of the media. The results show three false realities. First, the constructed news reflects the elite's dominance in the issue of terrorism and radicalism. Second, the production and consumption of news are based on media policy which is market oriented so the reality becomes unclear (pseudo). Third, the construction is also influenced by media ideology, media politics, media economy, and media culture. This requires media literacy through pesantren journalism. The products of pesantren journalism become the media of resistance to the issue by displaying pesantren as an Islamic education institution with rahmatan lil alamin values that rejects terrorism and radicalism.
