The Group of Eight (G8) is an unofficial forum of the heads of state of the eight leading industrialized countries. In this paper, I examine the effect of the G8 (and its predecessor, the G7) on international trade. I use a gravity model of trade; the panel data set covers bilateral trade between 175 countries from 1948 through 1999. I find that membership in the G7/G8 is consistently associated with a strong positive effect on trade. -- institution ; organization ; agreement ; international ; multilateral ; summit
The international projection of Japan's corporate and technological power is transforming world manufacturing and the international political economy. Debate rages about Japan's economic success and the role of the state in nurturing it. The Japanese background to these debates is widely misunderstood and are analysed in research-based chapters by British and Japanese specialists on government-industry relations. Japanese policies for industrial promotion, regulation and decline are set in a context of comparative political economy. Sectors include pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding and telecommunications in the US and Japan

Race is understudied in International Relations generally and International Security specifically. To mitigate this omission, this article provides a racial theory of threat perception. It argues that, under certain conditions, racial prejudices embedded in racial identities shape threat perceptions and generate behavioral dispositions. In the first step, racial similarity deflates threat perceptions, while racial difference inflates them. In the second step, deflated threat perceptions facilitate cooperation among racially similar agents, while inflated threat perceptions facilitate discord among racially different agents. Using extensive archival and secondary sources, the article illustrates the explanatory value of the theory in the case of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance (1902-23). Adapted from the source document.

The global expansion of capitalism under American hegemony in the second half of the 20th century has changed the international division of labor and center-periphery scheme proposed under British hegemony. Under the new international division of labor, the United States is forced to generate an ever growing deficit in their trade account in order to accommodate the "mercantilist" expansion of Asian countries, produced by the trans-nationalization of big capital, under American aegis. This form of global economic articulation is at the root of the rupture of the Bretton Woods system and the growing financial liberalization imposed by the hegemonic power over other countries since the 80s. "Fränze Wilhelm's book is one of the rare studies in International Relations (IR) employing post-foundational theories to grasp the prospect of a global normative order. The combination of philosophical vocabulary with IR literatures is brilliant, making this book a must-read for students and scholars in various fields of the social sciences and humanities. While it does not develop the contours of a positive global normative order, it certainly succeeds in unveiling the complexities of globally articulated relations of difference. Only a handful of books in IR show a similar degree of innovation and rigorousness!" --Prof. Dr. Dirk Nabers, University of Kiel (Germany) "'Political Difference and Global Normative Orders' provides an excellent discussion of the current scholarship on the question of order and difference. The author, by resorting to the post-foundational approach of hauntology, makes a valuable contribution to the study of order in IR and beyond." --Dr. David Shim, University of Groningen (The Netherlands) Once considered a question of an international order based on consolidated statehood and homogeneous social communities within national borders, global order has become a question of alternative political articulations, resistance movements, and cultural diversity, among others. This book first analyzes critically the conditions for the struggles of theorizing global normative order in political and IR theory. Second, to make sense of the presence of difference and possibility for global normative order in view of the simultaneous absence of first foundations, the study draws on post-foundational thinking based on the seminal work of German philosopher Martin Heidegger and Argentine political theorist Ernesto Laclau. Finally, the author develops a theoretical framework for a hauntological approach to global normative order that provides an alternative and theoretically coherent explanation for the emergence of global order. This is of interest to scholars as well as practitioners (including activists) concerned with global social relations, global political discourse, and the construction of global identity and normative order(s). Fränze Wilhelm is a doctoral candidate at the Kiel University Research Group on International Political Sociology.
