Although it receives much less attention than better known disarmament processes, the destruction of small arms is reshaping the military arsenals of the world. Out of roughly 200 modern military small arms world-wide, about 500,000 are destroyed every year. The commitment of major governments and international organizations makes small arms destruction is a permanent addition to the global disarmament repertoire. But the prospects for greater military small arms disarmament may be declining, as war in Afghanistan and Iraq create unprecedented demand for second-hand weaponry. After years of isolation, the Central-Eastern European countries facing social, economic, & political transition joined the international migratory movement & the integration of the continent. Since 1989, the European Community has directly & indirectly influenced the migration policy of Central-Eastern European countries through the adoption & implementation of trade & cooperation agreements, by removing the major barriers to trade with selected countries, & by concluding the Europe Agreements during 1991-1996. New future Central-Eastern European member countries require assistance in order to improve the level of economic, cultural, & social acceptance of migrants. 21 References. E. Sanchez

The article provides an overview of the international trade topics being discussed at the World Trade Organization. In reviewing the background of the liberalization process from the Brazilian point of view, the author emphasizes the need for greater domestic awareness of the emerging issues and new directions which are to be discussed at the Singapore Conference. Occupying a central position within this context is the question of multilateralism versus regionalism and its consequences. The author describes other controversial themes debated in the forums, including the social clause, investment, competition policies and the environmental issue. (Polit Externa/DÜI)

This paper analyses the genesis and evolution of the integration agreements between Argentina and Brazil in the analytical context of the various options for integration in the international economy. The transformations under way in the world economy, in particular those associated with technological changes which replace both the products and the production processes, call into question the validity of the advantages of specialization based on a mere availability of natural resources and cheap labour. In this respect, it is argued that the regional dimension can acquire decisive importance for rethinking the process of industrial reconversion

The International Investment Regime (iir) materialises in international arbitral tribunals that protect the rights of foreign investors. Could these tribunals hamper the implementation of exceptional measures agreed to end armed conflicts? The principle of proportionality, usually employed to balance competing demands such as the interests of international investors and the right of states to self-determination, could fall short when it comes to the concept of a nation and a society's right to peace. Focusing on the Colombian peace process, this article argues that the agreement on land redistribution, a cornerstone of the peace agreements, benefits the whole society, including foreign investors. However, the colonialist nature of the iir could lead foreign investors, who see their investments and expected profits affected, to demand compensation for governmental land acquisition. The Colombian case suggests powerful lessons for the willingness of transitional states to defend their people's right to peace in international tribunals. © 2016 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, The Netherlands.

Why do negotiations succeed or fail, and why have negotiations on multilateral trade liberalization been so protracted? Negotiating Trade Liberalization at the WTO provides a comprehensive analysis of the Doha Round negotiations by showing how domestic political institutions, the absence of time pressure and a real deadline have an impact on bargaining outcomes. Based on original, primary source research, the book facilitates a better understanding of multilateral trade negotiations by explaining jargon and outlining the interaction between domestic and international politics. It provides scholars, students and policymakers with detailed information on WTO ministerial meetings from Seattle 1999 to the Geneva informal meeting in 2006 alongside analysis of the trade politics of the EU, US, Brazil, and Australia.

This volume presents the critical perspectives of feminists, critical race theorists, and queer and postcolonial theorists who question the adoption of European norms in the postcolonial world and whether such norms are enabling for disenfranchised communities or if they simply reinforce relations of domination and exploitation. It examines how postcolonial interventions alter the study of politics and society both in the postcolony and in Euro-America, as well as of the power relations between them. Challenging conventional understandings of international politics, this volume pushes the boundaries of the social sciences by engaging with alternative critical approaches and innovatively and provocatively addressing previously disregarded aspects of international politics. The fourteen contributions in this volume focus on the silencing and exclusion of vulnerable groups from claims of freedom, equality and rights, while highlighting postcolonial-queer-feminist struggles for transnational justice, radical democracy and decolonization, drawing on in-depth empirically-informed analyses of processes and struggles in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. They address political and social topics including global governance and development politics; neo-colonialism, international aid and empire; resistance, decolonization and the Arab Spring; civil society and social movement struggles; international law, democratization and subalternity; body politics and green imperialism. By drawing on other disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, this book both enriches and expands the discipline of political science and international relations. Primary readership for this volume will be academics and students concerned with globalization studies, postcolonial theory, gender studies, and international relations, as well as political activists and policy-makers concerned with social and transnational justice, human rights, democracy, gender justice and women's rights
