Heath W. Carter advances a bold new interpretation of the origins of American Social Christianity. While historians have often attributed the rise of the Social Gospel to middle-class ministers, seminary professors, and social reformers, this book places working people at the very centre of the story. The major characters - blacksmiths, glove makers, teamsters, printers, and the like - have been mostly forgotten, but as Carter convincingly argues, their collective contribution to American Social Christianity was no less significant than that of Walter Rauschenbusch or Jane Addams

This research analyzes the social factors that influence female entrepreneurial activity in South America. It is based on a review of specially specialized literature, an empirical level that applies principal component analysis (ACP) with data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) for the period 2008-2013. The study of female entrepreneurship has aroused economic and political interest, as well as academic and scientific attention, therefore, it is important to contribute to the generation of knowledge of this subject that is still in an incipient state. The results show that the factors related to social and cultural aspects such as: creating an enterprise is a professionally socially accepted option for women, promoting self-employment or the creation of businesses among women and both men and women have equal access opportunities to create a company, they maintain a high degree of significance with female entrepreneurship in the analyzed countries. One aspect to conclude is related to some reflection notes and challenges that address aspects that are not being contemplated in the societies of the South American region.
The following reflections on aspects and dimensions of social life in national Socialist concentration camps take their point of departure from the widely held view that, because the concentration camp represents an unprecedentedly extreme case of a relationship of subordination, it cannot be examined from a social point of view. In my paper, I will first discuss the features indicating that concentration camp prisoners did indeed comprise societies, and will thereupon present in greater detail the evidence of such societies found in the empirical material. Through a detailed analysis of ethnic differentiations made by the prisoners themselves, as well as of Antisemitism and Antiziganism within concentration camp society, I will then explain in detail how social distinctions functioned in this context. The analysis reveals that many of the criteria of social distinction had a material basis, frequently expressed in culturally defend behavior, while other aspects – such as Antisemitism – were based more on some inmates' belief in the "otherness" of their fellow prisoners. In the concluding summary, I formulate some basic ideas about the existence and nature of "society" in the concentration camps, and assess the explanatory power of social scientific theories.

Biometric Identifi cation Initiative is gaining momentum in Kazakhstan. For the security, facilitation and development of digital services, including public, social and commercial services, a remote identifi cation model based, among other things, on various biometric indicants will be developed. Under the implementation of Digital Kazakhstan Program which, among others, envisages a digital identifi cation mechanism, that will become a fundamental infrastructure conducive to the creation of a uniform digital landscape for the interaction and communication among fi nancial institutions, clients, authorities and business and will reliably raise the level and effi ciency of fi nancial, public and other services. The model is expected to identify clients through a database of public and commercial companies, and provide services to the authorities, business and social sector. Biometric systems are designed to identify a person by biological and physiological characteristics, such as fi ngerprints, iris, face, DNA, etc. In general, we acknowledge the proposed development of a remote identifi cation model which relies, among others, on various biometric indents. It is particularly important in the developing context of a universal digital media to provide predictability and legal certainty to this process. To fulfi ll the potential of biometric technologies to the full extent, the government needs to address protection of persons identified through such systems and maintain collection, storage and use of biometric data in line with international standards in the field of human rights and international privacy laws.
Blockchain has become much more than simply a fintech technology, and is enabling and inspiring new conversations around politics, governance, organization, institutions and power structures. I published an attempt to start a rigorous academic treatment of ideology in the blockchain space through my master's thesis titled Toward a Political Sociology of Blockchain at Queen's University. Since then, there have been continued rich discussions around politics and experimentation in line with the ideals of the blockchain movement. Examples include discussion of blockchain governance as a social contract, discussion of social scalability and how this enables us to organize, forums such as etherean.org, and movements such as RadicalxChange.org and the concept of Liberal Radicalism. Some of these movements have been started by similar actors in the blockchain space: Vitalik Buterin of the Ethereum project co-authored the paper on Liberal Radicalism which is deeply intertwined with RadicalxChange and the ethos of decentralization, and Lane Rettig is an Ethereum core developer and launched Etherean.org to be a non-maximalist community-based discussion of social aspects and implications around the emerging technology. While the cryptocurrency markets trended downward throughout 2018, there have been strong social indicators of a more mature system though increased interdisciplinary participation and development around the technology as well as increased interest by the public sector for use cases such as records keeping and identity solutions. I expand upon some of the concepts discussed in my thesis, and provide further evidence for the particular observations based on additional events I attended and took part in through late 2018 and early 2019. Primarily, additional evidence is taken from my attendance at both the ETHDenver and RadicalxChange conferences. I further develop some of the ideas and connections between the community that has emerged around blockchain technology, and the more recent adaptations in the political sphere, as well as implications of new forms of social organization allowed through the use of such technology.

"While testicles were key signs of the male body and the penis was essential for emission, those markers had to work in conjunction with performative cues, such as standing erect while urinating, growing beards and discharging a certain kind of semen. Some of the most important behavioural signs of the gender of masculinity were thus tied to the biologically sexed male body, and the latter is the focus here. Mutually constitutive, gender and sex were brought into being by anatomy and physiology, and also by actions, as well as being construed through images and words. The Welsh schoolmaster John Owen (d. 1622) neatly encapsulated logocentric virility in his epigram: "God himself is the Word; he made all things with a word. / We men make words; we too are words." Masculinity was an inter-related and variable mix of three main factors: genital signs, somatic deeds (like the mode of pissing), and behavioural indicators (such as choice of dress, and degree of aggressiveness). Case studies examined in this chapter demonstrate the range but not the instability of early modern parameters within which maleness was designated and enacted"--
Connecting Jesus to Social Justice argues a doctrinally traditional, orthodox basis for Christian participation in the public sphere on behalf of social justice. The book addresses a situation internal to churches in the U.S. from a Catholic perspective yet not without analogies in other churches and Christian movements. This book is a contributive, as well as distributive, idea of social justice from Catholic social teaching. The chapters take into account discussion on the public sphere and propose a theologically-principled, ecumenical and interreligious public for social justice

; The objective of the article is to reflect on the communication process as a key aspect to understand interculturality and dialogue, but from an approach that emphasizes the active role of communicators, who represent themselves in a "plurality of forms of expression" "(Young, 2000). This implies taking into account qualitative methods to explore meanings and contexts of communicators, highlighting above all those issues related to the common good and participation. As part of this exploration, the study presents definitions of interculturality, dialogue and communication that have a common base in the exchange of symbols and meanings. This proposal allows open perspectives to recognize the cultural and human component in communication in social conflict scenarios, instrumentalization of communication, and expansion of capacities for human development.
The book examines the extent to which Coser's (1956) 16 propositions can apply to tourism impact studies and, where possible, to enhance, deepen and challenge the original theory, using evidence from communities in China that differ from the context used by Coser. The combination of ethnographic description and sociologically-oriented analysis, drawing upon both Chinese and western paradigms that are, at times very different in their underlying value system, challenges several of Coser's suppositions. The book will also draw upon subsequent publications by the authors, both severally and separately. These publications have utilised different concepts and paradigms, including for example the use of Valene Smith's concept of the 'culture broker', Turner's concepts of marginalised peoples, and the paradigms of constructionism and interpretive research work used in other studies by the authors. The sum of the work, it is suggested, adds to our canon of knowledge about social conflict in tourism development as well as impacts of tourism on disadvantaged ethnic communities in China.
