La concentración mediática es uno de los aspectos que causa una mayor amenaza al mundo del periodismo. Son grandes y pocas las empresas propietarias, que aglutinan muchos medios de comunicación distintos: diversidad de oferta, pero no pluralismo. Asimismo, estos grandes conglomerados mediáticos hacen de la información un control de la opinión pública cercano a sus intereses de la economía de mercado, puesto que la información es sólo uno de sus negocios. El presente artículo pretende describir, en primer lugar, los principales conglomerados mediáticos de Colombia; y, en segundo, sus conexiones internacionales, así como la presencia internacional en las fronteras colombianas en su mundo mediático. Las conclusiones muestran que Colombia presenta un panorama similar al del contexto neoliberal internacional, en conexión con raíces imperialistas históricas, que provoca una fuerte concentración de poder. ; Media concentration is one of the greatest threats to journalism. Few and big companies own a lot of different mass media platforms: diversity of offer, but no pluralism. These media conglomerates take control of public opinion through information. This control is close to their neoliberal interests, because the flow of information is just one more of their bussiness interests. The present paper shows a description of the main Colombian media companies. Then, we show their international connections, and the latter's presence in Colombian mediatic situation. The conclusions show that Colombia presents a similar scene to the international neoliberal context, in connection with historical imperialist States, that provoques a strong concentration of power. ; A concentração dos meios de comunicação em mãos de algumas poucas e grandes empresas é uma das maiores ameaças ao jornalismo, oferecendo diversidade em lugar de pluralidade. Além disso, esses grandes conglomerados de mídia fazem uso da informação como forma de controle da opinião pública a favor dos seus interesses econômicos, transformando assim a informação em outro mais de seus negócios. Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo, em um primeiro momento, expor de forma descritiva os principais conglomerados de mídias colombianos. E na sequência, estabelecer as conexões internacionais dos mesmos, assim como, a presença internacional nas fronteiras colombianas no seu âmbito midiático. As conclusões demonstram que a Colômbia apresenta um panorama semelhante ao do contexto neoliberal internacional, em conexão com as raízes imperialistas históricas, causando uma forte concentração de poder.

From August 25 to 27, 2013, the Seventh Annual International Humanitarian Law Dialogs were held at the Chautauqua Institution in Lake Chautauqua, New York. Primarily organized by the Robert H. Jackson Center and cosponsored by other institutions and organizations including the American Society of International Law, the Dialogs bring together international criminal prosecutors, practitioners of international justice, scholars, NGO leaders, human rights activists, students, and members of the public to discuss pressing issues of international peace and justice.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has established itself as the twelfth-largest economy in the world, the largest West Asian economic power, world's largest oil producer, and a strong and capable force in international politics, particularly in the Sunni Islamic world. However, at present it is at crossroads. Should it continue as a 'kingdom' or usher in the process of inclusive political representation? This volume answers such questions and explores how the state is coping with domestic, regional and global developments to remain relevant in the changing times. It provides a holistic overview of a slew of economic, political, cultural, military and security policy measures that have been initiated by the government. The work also offers a detailed analysis of Saudi Arabia's relations with three significant powers -- USA, China and India -- and how they are evolving under new geopolitical and geostrategic dynamics.

The author analyses fourteen letters, part of Helene Vacaresco's private correspondence - she was Romania's permanent delegate to the Society of Nations. The letters date from April 1926 to January 1927 and thirteen of them are addressed to her friend Michel Boereso who was then head of the Politic Department of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Helene Vacaresco expresses her opinions -free from all official constraints- with regard to internal and international politics and to diplomatic world.

This article explores the normative and institutional implications of the long-term use of individual sanctions by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). It identifies the systematic and extensive use of individual sanctions as the most fundamental qualitative change in international sanctions policy during this century. It argues that policy is developing towards their use not only in order to address international crises and disputes of relatively limited scope and duration, but also to address enduring criminal activities, notably (but not exclusively) related to terrorism. While these sanctions remain associated with threats to international peace and security in the classic sense, they have in many cases transformed into long-term confiscations of individual assets, instead of temporary freezes. The UNSC, designed to address international crises on an exceptional basis, now engages in permanent sequestrations and is tasked with the monitoring of individual criminal activities on a massive scale. While individual sanctions have on some occasions proven effective, their systematic use by inadequate institutions complicates the Council's implementation of sanctions and undermines its legitimacy. In contrast to previous state-centric accounts, this article sheds new transnational light on the 1919 Paris peace settlement through its investigation of proposals for transnational associations' roles in the envisaged new world order. The popularity of some of these proposals, and their perceived potential to contribute towards a more democratic, legitimate and peaceful international order, stimulated their consideration during official negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference, and subsequent League of Nations practice was also perceived to have reflected some of the ideas put forward in these proposals. This article provides a typology of these proposals, and it critically evaluates the claims made with respect to their repercussions for democracy, legitimacy and peace. The article further elucidates how, despite their limitations, these proposals helped open up diplomacy to transnational associations both at the Paris Peace Conference and in the League of Nations era.

The study provides the analysis of theoretical approaches to the concept of security in the European Union integration processes. Methodological bases for development of the concept of security of the European Union integration processes based on two paradigms of activity are offered. The first one provides institutional and financial autonomy in defense and peacekeeping; the second one involves the delegation of most security powers and the collective security of the Commonwealth. The main stages of building the European security and defense policy in the context of new threats to regional and global security are analyzed. The following tasks have been identified as the priority areas for further development of the EU: consensus decision making in all areas of the common security and defense policy; development of a new methodology for responding to threats; effective use of opportunities for international cooperation.

Refugees are both an urgent humanitarian issue and the subject of much political debate in the U.S. and Europe. This research paper compares and contrasts the asylum process in US and Sweden. It analyzes the similarities and differences in their refugee policies and how asylumseeker rights are undermined or supported in the detention centers. The research discusses the historical origin of the contemporary asylum/immigration policies, international standards on detention, their implication, and key contemporary policy trends in US and Sweden. The selection of US and Sweden was not random. Both countries are highly influential in different ways in shaping global policies toward refugees. Both have faced a recent upsurge in incoming refugees; however, they have adopted different approaches to the asylum process. It also focuses on detention policies and conditions and their implications for the ability of refugees to fully exercise in practice their rights to asylum.
