Recent trends suggest that international economic law may be witnessing a renaissance of convergence - both parallel and intersectional. The adjudicative process also reveals signs of convergence. These diverse claims of convergence are of legal, empirical and normative interest. Yet, convergence discourse also warrants scepticism. This volume contributes to both the general debate on the fragmentation of international law and the narrower discourse concerning the interplay between international trade and investment, focusing on dispute settlement. It moves beyond broad observations or singular case studies to provide an informed and wide-reaching assessment by investigating multiple standards, processes, mechanisms and behaviours. Methodologically, a normative stance is largely eschewed in favour of a range of 'doctrinal,' quantitative and qualitative methods that are used to address the research questions. Furthermore, in determining the extent of convergence or divergence, it is important to recognize that there is no bright line or clear yardstick for determining its nature or degree.

One cannot exaggerate the importance of estimating how international trade responds to changes in income and prices. But there is a tension between whether one should use models that fit the data but that contradict certain aspects of the underlying theory or models that fit the theory but contradict certain aspects of the data. The essays in Estimating Trade Elasticities book offer one practical approach to deal with this tension. The analysis starts with the practical implications of optimising behaviour for estimation and it follows with a re-examination of the puzzling income elasticity for US imports that three decades of studies have not resolved. The analysis then turns to the study of the role of income and prices in determining the expansion in Asian trade, a study largely neglected in fifty years of research. With the new estimates of trade elasticities, the book examines how they assist in restoring the consistency between elasticity estimates and the world trade identity

The analysis of the interactions between natural resource scarcity, technological innovation and the dynamics of eco- nomic systems has a long-standing tradition in economics. During the 1980s and the early 1990s, a new phase of these interactions initiated under the effects of technological revolution and the problem of the environment. The general concept behind this book is that the issue of natural resou- cesand the environment in relation to economic growth can- not be addressed without due consideration for the effects of technological innovation on thedynamics of economic sy- stems. Technological innovation alone, however, is not a sufficient condition for the sustainability of economic growth. Policies may have a role in solving the internatio- nal distribution problems generated by the non-converging development path of developed and developing countries. На основі двох років роботи міжнародної мистецької резиденції FACE of ART проаналізовано нову мову та художні засоби образотворення у творчості молодих художників, що, враховуючи сьогоденний культурний контекст, безпосередньо залежать від потоків інформації та змін у суспільній свідомості соціуму. Порівнюючи художні експерименти старшого покоління та оригінальні спроби молодих художників, робляться певні висновки щодо нових тенденцій розвитку сучасного мистецтва. ; The publication, based on two years of work of the international artistic residence «FACE of ART», analyzed new artistic means of art in the artworks of contemporary artists, which, given the present cultural context, are directly dependent on the flow of information and changes in the social consciousness of society. Based on the comparison of artistic experiments and original older generation of young artists attempt made certain conclusions about the new trends of modern art. On the example of the analysis of the creative experiments of the Scottish artist Carla Fullerton, the Berlin artist Marcus Hoffman, the Kharkov artist Roman Mikhailv, the activities of the Ukrainian "Open Group" creative group that worked at the Residence during its various programs, it is noted that both foreign and Ukrainian artists, exploring the means of art, social, economic, energy, political world and personal tragedies, are reflected in the creation of their artistic image s external challenges of the present, creating a new artistic language of Ukrainian art, which certainly requires scientific analysis and generalization of basic art to establish trends, transformations and perspectives of World Art in general, and Ukrainian Art in particular.In particular, the publication states that with the cardinal difference between the artistic signs of works of Ukrainian and foreign artists, the global orientation of thematic diversity (economic, social, political, environmental crises) and the main thing that the visual images produced by them are completely different from the previous school of art and at first glance are artificially created, however, the analysis of the main works gives grounds to distinguish certain signs and directions of formation, certain «letters of the alphabet» of the new artistic language of contemporary art. ; На основе двух лет работы международной художественной резиденции FACE of ART проанализированы новый язык и методы создания образов в творчестве современных художников, которые, учитывая сегодняшний культурный контекст, напрямую зависят от потоков информации и от изменений в общественном сознании. На основе сравнения художественных экспериментов старшего поколения и оригинальных стремлений молодых художников осуществляются определенные выводы относительно новых тенденций развития современного искусства. Since a few years, humanitarian non-govemmental organisations (NGOs) are faced with increased insecurity in some of the regions in which they work. Given that humanitarians traditionally consider themselves to be protected by their neutrality, assurning that assisting those in need will automatically ensure acceptance of their work by the local population and the conflicting parties, the increased insecurity challenges the identity of humanitarian NGOs. Hence, addressing this insecurity proves challenging for NGOs, which is why they tend to shy away from taking steps in this direction. Nevertheless, many hurnanitarian NGOs are changing their attitudes towards security issues and have, for example, established an internal security management and exchange security-relevant information among each other. An analysis based on 27 semi-structured interviews reveals that this development can be explained by the activities of an epistemic community ofhurnanitarian secu-rity experts. The latter is neither primarily nor exclusively composed of scientists, but of individuals coming from different sectors who share a professional expertise, on the one hand, and a particular set of values, on the other. Those two elements explain not only the internal cohesion ofthe epistemic community, but also why the standards it formulates are accepted by other non-state and even by governmental actors and, hence, why the epistemic community can be considered to dispose of authority. In line with the themes presented in the introduction to this special issue, this article explores what impact twenty-first century global politics has had on Thailand's agency. It is argued that while multi-dimensional challenges of the current world order have posed fewer constraints on Thailand's capability to achieve intended outcomes, internal political instability and the U.S. ambivalence towards Southeast Asia on the whole complicates how Thailand navigates its position amidst the U.S.-China rivalry. However, these complications should not be construed as factors that restrict agency. Despite maintaining a close relationship with China, Bangkok has managed to find various ways to enhance its ability to achieve intended outcomes in order to protect the country's autonomy. Based on Thailand's experience, this article reveals the importance of using more open-ended approaches that pay equal attention to factors that complicate, enhance and constrain weaker state agency at both the domestic and international levels. It also offers opportunities for further research into non-material sources of state agency. (Pac Rev/GIGA)
