The Belt and Road Initiative is a cross-border economic belt initiated and led by the Chinese government in 2013. Its scope covers the history of the Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Road through China, Central Asia, North and West Asia, the Indian Ocean coast, the Mediterranean coast countries and regions. The country and region covered by the initiative are vast, and the impact is therefore enormous. This thesis uses geopolitical theory and methods to study the traditional Chinese geopolitical ideology, the development of the initiative, geostrategic at-tempts, geopolitical influences and risks proposed by One Belt and Road Initiative develop-ment strategy.

"This timely book examines the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), assessing its effect on the international economic order and global governance more broadly. Through a variety of qualitative case studies the book investigates the implementation of the BRI and evaluates its development outcomes both for China and the countries it interacts with under the initiative, along with its international implications. Chapters discuss as-yet-unexplored cases from the ground in brand new studies based on fieldwork by leading academics, as well as providing alternative readings of the rationale behind the BRI. Questions about connectivity and the financial implications of Chinese investments are addressed, taking a balanced approach that demonstrates the complexity and nuance of these issues, and the far-from-linear impact that the BRI is having on global governance. This incisive book will be critical reading for scholars and policy makers working on China and global governance. It will also provide useful insights for officials and practitioners working in BRI countries and international institutions, think-tanks and NGOs"--

This open access book provokes critical thinking regarding the most ambitious Chinese project since the founding of the People's Republic of China, The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book presents extensive quality research and original insights in assessing the status of China's outbound investment and construction projects under the BRI umbrella. Referring to case studies and projects of selected countries from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, the author sheds new light on the issues and problems associated with the BRI's implementation and discusses both the readjustments and prospects for the BRI. Finally, this book demarcates the limits and potential of the world's second largest economy in pushing for the BRI, which is challenged by enormous domestic tensions and external pressures. It also identifies and analyzes potential new collaboration areas between the Belt and Road countries and China under the BRI framework in the context of the post-COVID-19 era. It provides an outstanding reference for academics, students, policymakers, and the business community working in areas of international affairs and Asian economics and development, particularly those interested in Sino-relations and Chinese power dynamics in the global world order.
