Gulf Watch Alaska: Long-term research and monitoring in the Gulf of Alaska
Within the Gulf of Alaska, in the North Pacific Ocean, three major events - both natural and human-caused – resulted in large-scale ecosystem changes during the last 50 years. The first event was a naturally occurring ecosystem regime shift in the late 1970s in which altered ocean conditions resulted in dramatic changes in marine communities. This event caused long-term declines in many shrimp, crab, seabird, and marine mammal populations over the subsequent decades (Anderson and Piatt 1999). As a result, some fisheries were closed, and a population of sea lions was listed as endangered, while some other species and fisheries thrived.

Propaganda, the press and conflict: the Gulf War and Kosovo
In: Contemporary security studies
An incisive analysis of the use of the press for propaganda purposes during conflicts, using the first Gulf War and the intervention in Kosovo as case studies. As the contemporary analysis of propaganda during conflict has tended to focus considerably upon visual and instant media coverage, this book redresses the imbalance and contributes to the growing discourse on the role of the press in modern warfare. Through an innovative comparative analysis of press treatment of the two conflicts it reveals the existence of five consistent propaganda themes: portrayal of the leader fig.

Demographic Change in the Arab Gulf States: Recent Trends and Implications for the Future
In: Scandinavian journal of development alternatives and area studies, Band 9, S. 103-115
ISSN: 0280-2791
Census & government survey data from major Persian Gulf states -- Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, & Kuwait -- are used to investigate the political & economic implications of demographic change in the region. After briefly outlining the composition of the work force, it is suggested that the Gulf states are characterized by low participation by nationals & a substantial dependence on foreign workers. It is argued that the lack of clearly defined work force localization policies, the ability of employers to reduce labor costs by contracting non-nationals, decreased income in the private sector, & a civil service system that minimizes competition have hindered efforts to localize the work force. While Gulf governments have attempted increased "Arabization" of the Gulf labor market -- hiring non-national Arabs -- this policy has caused economic & political problems: conservative governments must contend with potentially radical Arab populations, & Arab migrants bring dependents, thus increasing social costs. Future Gulf trends include a decrease in the demand for unskilled & semiskilled workers & an increased need for professional & higher skilled workers for service & maintenance sectors. It is suggested that these trends will result in a high rate of retention of foreign labor, accompanied by a decline in immigrant work flows & heightened mobility of non-nationals within the individual Gulf states. 4 Tables.
