Bank Mandiri, the largest bank in Indonesia, was the latest government institution to provide financial subsidies to Indonesian forestry conglomerates by writing off major part of their debts. Before Bank Mandiri, IBRA, under the pressure by the IMF for the "quick sales" of its assets, had written off debts of these forestry companies, in the amount of billions of US dollars. Previously, these forestry companies had grown rapidly, without regard to sustainable forests, due to Suharto's forest subsidies. These latest capital subsidies will encourage the companies to undervalue the forests they are charged with managing, and this will lead to continued high level forest destruction-paid for with public money.

The end of the Late Bronze Age ca. 1200 BC in the Eastern Mediterranean is traditionally viewed as an end point. Great empires collapsed, prominent cities were destroyed, interregional exchange disappeared, and writing systems were all but lost in most of the Eastern Mediterranean. The goal of this volume is to examine one key aspect of the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron I in the Southern Levant, the development and changes in interregional exchange both over time and regionally. Twelve non-local types of material culture were collected into a database in order to track the development of interregional exchange over the course of the LBA to the Iron I. With this data, this volume explores what affect, if any, did changes in interregional exchange have on the 'collapse' of the LBA societies in the Southern Levant. Another key aspect of this work is an examination of the supposed wave of destruction which took the Southern Levant by storm to see if these events might have affected trade and contributed to the transitions during the end of the LBA into the Iron I. In all this work seeks to understand what changes took place in interregional exchange, how might destruction have affected this, and was this the cause for the transition to the Iron I.

The destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, resulted in a rapid response by government to evacuate the area and, in subsequent days, to bring the city back to a semblance of normalcy. This article provides a case study of government action in New York City during and after the World Trade Center catastrophe. What is most striking is the skill and intensity of government's response to the emergency and the hard work, dedication, and bravery of New York City's government officials. This article presents government and public service at its finest, under some of the most difficult conditions one can imagine.

The Old City of Tiberias was one of the most beautiful and ancient cities in Palestine. With a mixed population of Palestinian Arabs and (largely) Mizrahi 1 1 The Mizrahim are eastern or oriental Jews. and Sephardic Jews until the 1948 Palestinian Nakba, Tiberias – in which Maimonides is buried – is, according to Jewish tradition, among the four 'sacred' cities in the country. Shortly after Israel was established, the secular Zionist establishment decided to raze the Old City to its foundations. As a result of this policy, the Old City, with all its historical buildings and nearly all its historical walls, was entirely erased, and in its place today there are parking lots and modern high-rise hotels. This article traces the story of the destruction of Old Tiberias and examines the attitudes of the secular Labour Zionist leadership to a 'sacred' Jewish city and the reactions to these attitudes of the local Sephardic and Mizrahi public.

This thesis explores the UK post-punk movement, looking at how the movement emerged within the political and social climate of 1970s and early 1980s Britain and the key characteristics of the genre. I also provide a deeper exploration of the movement through a case study of Joy Division. The central questions within my research are: What was the social and political climate of Britain during the 1970s and 1980s? How did this influence the emergence of the post-punk movement? What are the complexities and nuances of Joy Division and its place in the Manchester music scene? How do these earn the band the title of post-punk vanguard? While there are many scholarly articles, there are very few book-length explorations discussing post-punk. In terms of scholarship related to Joy Division, there is a plethora of sources ranging from scholarly articles to memoirs. The arguments made within this scholarship largely center around the different methods of understanding the band. To conduct this research, I referenced first-hand accounts from memoirs and documentaries as well as books, scholarly articles, and more surrounding the topic. My project is structured into three chapters. The first chapter explores the emergence of post-punk, a literature review, and discusses the key characteristics of the movement. The second chapter places my research within its historical context and the third chapter is a case study of Joy Division. I ultimately argue that post-punk was both a continuation of punk and an entirely new movement emerging at a time of great turmoil. I also argue that Joy Division can be viewed and understood as both a representation of place, the product of outside parties, and uniquely personal psychology. The significance of this research lies in the lessons shared regarding the influence of music and how musical movements come to fruition, as well in the contributions it makes to scholarship related to Joy Division.
