A paradox of modern life is the simultaneously increasing dependence on & distrust of technology. In dealing with this paradox, two extremes are advocated: (1) condemnation of any criticism of technology; & (2) obstruction of any technological advance. In the middle ground is a solution that combines freedom of technology & technological citizenship. Freedom of technology refers to the unleashing of technological creativity, uncoupling it from tyranny of the state & the yoke of economic necessity to explore new technological davelopments. At the same time, the application of technology must be separated from its creation. An autonomous process in which ethicists, politicians, the public, & technological experts participate is required to determine technological implementation. Freedom for technology & societal liberation from technology are not incompatible. D. Generoli
