By its universal approach, Swedish public housing has traditionally been an instrument to contribute to the national policy aim of "good housing for all". However, the universal approach is under pressure. Demands on competitiveness and a businesslike return on investment means public housing companies are increasingly striving for profit in their everyday business. This paper analyses this development with the strategic-relational approach (SRA) and argues that a new economic imaginary has emerged, which limits the companies' perceived possibilities to retain the universal approach. However, spatio-temporal variations are evident and the findings give evidence to ample actorial discretion for companies to negotiate the economic imaginary in the current political-economic landscape. Thus, the potential to retain the undertaking of "good housing for all" still exists, but it is unevenly actualized. How this discretion is used may be decisive for the future of the universal character of public housing in Sweden.
Written at the intersection of migration studies, urban studies, and research on activism, this thesis contributes to the exploration of solidarities born on the ground in an urban context marked by immigration and economic restructuring. Based on ethnographic material collected 2013–2016 in Malmö, Sweden, it examines alliances and friendships generated across social, cultural, ethnic, and legal divides through a particular political practice—activism as carried out by the extra-parliamentarian left. A decisive aspect is the particularity of Malmö, a city with a high density and diversity of activist groups, and Möllevången, the neighbourhood where their actions are concentrated. Möllevången is conceptualised in this thesis as an incubator for resistance to the dispossessing effects of neoliberal economic restructuring and urban gentrification. Special attention is devoted to activist groups that, at the time of fieldwork, affected the most people through their large mobilisations and solidarity-based work. While not negating differences among activists or between activists and racialised migrants in precarious legal conditions, the thesis highlights their shared experiences of co-creating political spaces and interests—commoning. This kind of embodied solidarity requires activists to experiment with non-hierarchical and non-normative ways of structuring social relations, a process filled with challenges, ambivalences, and conflicts. The thesis shows how activists cope with challenges and what they perceive as achievements. Furthermore, it shows that—despite the ever-increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric, restrictive migration policies, and neoliberalisation of the commons—solidarity and commoning contribute to pathways of migrant emplacement: re-establishing life in a particular locality, building networks, making friends, and developing a feeling of belonging to a new place. Not only does the activists' commitment to radical equality and mutual aid create certain pathways for emplacement in the city, it also enables the political socialisation of some migrants and paves the way for a new generation of migrant activists in Malmö.
International audience ; In this file, we examine the theater and the iconography (with a detour by the literature) in the inter-war period, to take the measure of the stakes crossing the different representations of the Man confronted with the machine. Cristina Trinchero in "Theatrical machines and machine-men on the boards" compares the futuristic theater to the theater of the existence of Jean-Victor Pellerin. The crisis of modernity that feeds these texts, is also echoed in a certain iconography of the time, a real social allegory. Max Bonhomme analyzes the press images of the 1930s in the prism of the ideological, political and sociologizing discourses of a number of contemporary essays and pamphlets. International audience ; The temporal dimension is insufficiently taken into account by current work in argumentation studies, though it may contribute centrally to the construction of the meaning and to the understanding of the argumentative orientation of certain discourses. This article proposes to examine some of the processes by which argumentative discourse is given a temporal dimension, and to identify the functions such a dimension assumes. The reflection will be based on a case study: the speeches of politicians issued from the "New Right" in Argentina-and in particular, speeches by its main representative, Mauricio Macri.
Master's thesis in Applied finance ; In this master thesis we explore the relationship between morally driven companies and their financial returns. To assess the morality of the company, we have used scores based on a company's environmental, social and governmental performance. The scores are based on a trusted 3rd party rating agency. By adding an ESG-score term to the Single-index model and the Fama-French-Carhart model, we were able to empirically assess the effect of each point of ESG score against the return of a given company. Based on 10 years of historical data we were able to find both statistical and economically significance that each point of ESG turned out to reduce the expected return annually with 0,147 %. Moving from the 25 % highest rated to the 25 % lowest rated in terms of ESG (in our sample) would yield an annually increased return of 3,10 %. This numerical figure was the same for the single-index model and the Fama-French-Carhart model. We also test for country differences and sector differences where we find statistical significance differences in return for Italy and France and the Energy sector. These differences are also correlated with the return in ESG score. Furthermore, we reduced our sample to check if there were differences when using 5 years, 2 years and 1 year of data. Results then showed to be inconsistent and we could not find statistical significance for these estimated time periods.
Based on conversations with and publications of Samir Amin, the article explores connections between his ideas on global political strategy and sexual self-determination. One of the questions is about struggles related to homosexuality in Africa. To what extent did he believe that some of the demands for sexual self-determination, including certain forms of feminism and LGBT rights, were so overly embedded in Eurocentrism that they were not fully suitable for popular struggles in many parts of the Global South? The question is framed in the context of state-centric conceptions of the political. Even if some of the analysis includes a critical tone toward his strategical options, it also highlights the continuing importance of Samir Amin as a point of reference for future struggles to create transnational and global instruments for democratic transformations. ; Peer reviewed
Contemporary technologies facilitate democratic participation in a digital form. And Pirate Parties claim to represent such an empowered electronic democracy. Thereby this study examines whether Pirate Parties are actually social movements practicing and promoting electronic democracy. For this aim, the research applies the 'real utopias' framework exploring desirable, viable, and achievable alternative social designs. In terms of methods, the inquiry is based on the analysis of expert interviews and political manifestos. The study revealed that Pirate Parties are genuine democratic initiatives, widely implementing principles and mechanisms of electronic democracy. Overall, the studied Pirate Parties foster member participation at all stages of policy making. Even though Pirate Parties have achieved low electoral results for public offices, their models of internal democratic organization and political ideas are proliferated by other parties. ; Peer reviewed
