Argentina is experiencing a political and economic transition that in a few months show social impact of extreme worry. In clear contradiction with the commitments assumed by our country in the Beijing conference (1995), and after 20 years of its celebration, Argentine's women as European's, appear to face new setbacks in the conquered social rights and little prospect to make progress on outstanding debts of Democracy. Workers fired massively from state areas, closures of programs "Assistance to Victims of Domestic Violence", resource restrictions for sexual and reproductive health policies; and many social implications due to the economic policies that capitalism implements in its neoliberal version, exacerbating the subordinate status of women because of their gender, class and geographical measures. As it is shown in Argentinian history and current European experience, especially in the popular sectors, on the economic crisis, women constitute the reserve army of labor that becomes available and flexible. Indeed, when the state ceases to assume functions related to its role as rights guarantor and social policies maker, women replace it and assume more responsibilities than usual, almost always related to health, nutrition and care, affecting their access and practice of their own human rights.
; Around the mid- 20s in Spain a process of acculturation of women was to take place that would lead to major changes with regard to their active participation in society. Women would begin to become aware of themselves, of their own potential and, at the same time, their disadvantaged position when compared to men. This situation leads to the awakening of the critical sense as women- they no longer wish to contemplate the reality, but now want to intervene. The female reflection on the world that she can scarcely affect will be gaining ground and becoming more important, as shown in the journalistic work of the playwright Carmen Nelken, better known by her pen name, Magda Donato. Her thinking, within the framework of a more critical feminism than their contemporary, has been virtually ignored and forgotten for years. Therefore, it requires a look back in order to establish the ideological parameters on which rests its position on the current model in the early decades of the last century, as evidenced by the number of articles published in Spain in 1920. Donato uses the word to demonstrate the lack of real champions of feminism in Spain that can lead this movement of liberation and social integration of women into the way of coherence and effectiveness, especially among those who occupy important positions in the political arena . This happens at a time when feminist women's organizations have proliferated considerably but without a real awareness of what it meant to the struggle for equality that for Magda Donato was closely related to the achievement of the right to vote that would ensure better working conditions and access to culture.
Dr. Sherman P. Vinograd fulfilled the roles of Chief of Medical Science and Technology and Director of Biomedical Research at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from the fall of 1961 until the spring of 1979. In this role he shaped, organized, and directed NASA's program of medical research as a funded program of studies, which was carried out in not only NASA Center laboratories, but also in university, industry, and other government laboratories and hospitals all over the country. It produced a large substrate of information through its bed rest studies, vestibular, bone, neuromuscular, hematology, and cardiovascular researches. It also produced valuable fall-out, such as an accurate bone density measurement technique which is now in common clinical use. ; His major activities during this career were conceptualizing, establishing, and chairing the Space Medicine Advisory Group (SPAMAG) charged with defining the earth-based and space-based research and life-support requirements for a manned orbiting research laboratory. This group designed a carefully planned study utilizing highly qualified, specialized members of the scientific community. They postulated a non-existent orbiting laboratory to be designed according to the needs of future human flight crews and requirements for human spaceflight information. This would result in the creation of Skylab. ; He was also responsible for establishing the In-flight Medical Experiments Program in preparation for the Apollo series of manned space flights. This program was a series of carefully designed flight crew studies derived from proposals by qualified scientists both from within and outside NASA to evaluate human responses to spaceflight. ; In addition, Dr. Vinograd developed a supportive Research and Development Program necessary to provide pertinent ground-based data and to advance state-of-the-art medical measurement technology, a major development of which was the Integrated Medical and Behavioral Laboratory Measurement System (IMBLMS). This consisted of medical experiments and accompanying equipment necessary to perform them that was used from the Gemini through the Skylab manned space flight programs. Carried aboard virtually any post-Apollo space vehicle by virtue of its rack and module design, these designs were used well into the future. He also fostered the continuing ground-based medical research program sponsored and/or conducted by NASA. ; The Dr. Sherman P. Vinograd Aerospace Exploration collection consists of artifacts, books, correspondence, financial materials, newspapers, photographs, plaques, printed materials, and reports relating to Dr. Vinograd's early life, his career as an M. D. prior to joining NASA, his years as a physician and researcher at NASA, and the other professional organizations and projects in which he was involved both during and after these periods. ; Box 9, Folder 22
The International Association for Sediment Water Science sponsors a symposium triennially, during which the latest developments in the study of interactions between sediments and their overlying waters are presented. These Proceedings are a collection of papers submitted following the 7th Symposium held in Baveno, Italy, during 22-25 September, 1996. The study of sediment/water interactions crosses disciplinary and ecosystem boundaries. The work presented in this volume demonstrates the importance of multidisciplinarity to the field with papers included in the general subject areas of sediment/water dynamics, sediment/contaminant interactions, the role of sediments in element cycles, the use of sediments as historical indicators, sediment/organism interactions, and studies of sedimentary environments in remote areas. This book will be of interest to graduate students, researchers, government regulators and environmental managers working in many areas of environmental protection and management including sedimentary geochemistry, water quality management, particle dynamics and reconstruction of environmental history
