(Autorenreferat)

"Statelessness asserts that Europe first encountered mass statelessness neither inside its borders nor during the twentieth century, but in the New World, several hundred years earlier. Through close readings of political philosophers, it argues that statelessness became a central problem for political thought early on, with far-reaching implications for thinking both on the state and on being human"--
"This book examines the ethical standard of the obligations of power articulated by philosophers Rabindrinath Tagore and Amartya Sen. The author argues that Tagore and Sen focused on the need to diminish all states' capacity for violence, regardless of regime type"--

»Valuations. Philosophical Premises of Moral Discourses and some of the Political Consequences« -- Concerning the problems of valuation, the philosophical tradition knows of two different approaches: the first sees all values which we are appreciating as unchangeable premises of an eternal orientation, the second tries to persuade us to concede, that we are merely following subjective rules, created by our education or even made up by ourselves as we go along. The book proposes a new perspective – based a on the fact that we are creatures using signs to find our ways around. Exemplifying the consequences of this result some problems of political freedom and equality, of the welfare state and of migration are integrated.
Post-Stalinism – the last three decades of socialism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe – gave birth to new political ideas and social struggles, which reshaped socialist societies and forged new global imaginaries. With a focus on socialist Bulgaria, Restless History traces the dynamic polemical and social shifts that took place during this period. With anti-Stalinist and humanist visions, socialist societies rebuilt their material and social worlds around social-reproductive needs such as care, housing, education, leisure, rest, and access to culture and the arts. In the sphere of global politics, they created anti-racist, feminist, anti-colonial, and anti-imperialist solidarities that challenged Western hegemony and reordered the global geographies of power. Yet the changes of the period also took some troubling directions: humanist imaginaries of socialist progress, modernity, and nationhood welcomed ideas of national and social homogeneity, opening the doors to ethnonationalism. Following the promising as well as troubling moments in the history of Bulgarian post-Stalinism, Zhivka Valiavicharska brings to life the complexities of real lived socialism. This volume re-examines the post-Stalinist period in Bulgaria, Eastern Europe, and beyond – in all its tensions and contradictions – to offer the socialist past as an unfinished history, one that cannot be easily put to rest.

In an age of immediate and global exchange of information, the ability to theorize about political conditions remains largely an elite, technocratic, and esoteric enterprise. In this timely intervention, Dean Caivano and Sarah Naumes argue that storytelling in the form of narrative and autoethnography creates an emancipatory potential through its ability to theorize from below, welcoming marginalized and excluded voices. Drawing from the disciplines of political studies, philosophy and literary studies, this volume offers a new assessment of political texts through the lens of the sublime as a fertile terrain to challenge who can write and disseminate political ideas - and how.
