In 2007, PS: Political Science and Politics
published myriad articles covering a vast range of topics. Symposia
alone in 2007 focused on the 2006 Mexican election, the state of the
editorial cartoon, the U.S. military, how to incorporate the
politics of the Iberian Peninsula into your syllabus, and the future
of state election reform. Upcoming symposia will focus on
institutional review boards, research ethics, gender and the
presidency, and French politics. And remember, these are only the
symposia. The journal's commitment to publishing articles on
pedagogy and on the profession, as well as exemplary topical
scholarship on a wide array of topics, calls for an equally broad
stable of expert reviewers. PS cannot publish such
diverse work without the outstanding work (and open-mindedness) of
our peer reviewers. The peer-review process relies on the
professionalism and generosity of those who contribute their time to
read and evaluate the work of others. The editors of
PS thank the following scholars, who served as
manuscript reviewers between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2007.
Very special thanks go to those scholars whose names appear in bold;
they reviewed for PS in both 2006 and 2007.

Ever wonder why militant groups behave as they do? For instance, why did Al Qaeda attack the World Trade Center whereas the African National Congress tried to avoid civilian bloodshed? Why does Islamic State brag over social media about its gory attacks, while Hezbollah denies responsibility or even apologizes for its carnage? This text shows that militant group behaviour depends on the tactical intelligence of the leaders. The author has extensively studied the political plights of hundreds of militant groups throughout world history and reveals that successful militant leaders have followed three rules. These rules are based on original insights from the fields of political science, psychology, criminology, economics, management, marketing, communication, and sociology. It turns out there's a science to victory in militant history. But even rebels must follow rules.

In this issue of Social Science History we begin a special series of articles surveying the impact and use of historical research and reasoning in the other social sciences—anthropology, economics, geography, political science, and sociology. The authors of the essays have been asked to analyze their disciplines so that readers will get a sense both of major issues and research directions and of influences. In addition, they have been asked to include in their references older important works as well as more recent ones, so that those in other disciplines may use the essays as bibliographic sources. After the series is completed, we expect to publish an expanded version of it as a separate book.
