An Introduction to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea -- An Introduction to the Cases of the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and International Arbitrations -- Baselines and Boundary Delimitation.

Describes efforts to teach peer counseling to adolescents living in a children's refugee camp in Subotica, Serbia, during 1993, & establishment of the "Peer Link Club," an international organization of adolescents/young adults trained to implement & teach peer counseling. The process involves learning the skills/techniques of active listening & problem solving in order to counsel other young people with traumatized pasts. Almost all of the children in camp had a parent or other close relative harmed in the war. Difficulties involved in getting the wary adolescents to begin communicating are described, as well as the progressive increase in group cohesion & sharing that occurred during the course of the workshop. Strategies used to create a context for relationship building are examined, along with the use of role-playing to teach participants how to engage in active listening & deal with stressful conversations. The project enabled young people to begin the long process of overcoming the impact of war & reviving their interrupted adolescence. Graduates eagerly carried the project to other refugee camps. J. Stephanie Lawson's book is by far the most comprehensive study of regional politics in Oceania produced to date. Drawing on a range of interdisciplinary sources, she provides a systematic account of major issues facing the region and presents conceptual and theoretical issues in a sophisticated but accessible manner. She traces the trajectories of regional politics from the earliest human settlements to European exploration and colonization, the period of formal regionalization in the post-war period, decolonization, the Cold War, and key geopolitical developments in the post-Cold War period. She also focuses on identity politics, manifest at various levels from the local through to the national, subregional and regional, as well as broader configurations around the West/non-West divide. This book will be of interest to anyone engaged with the history and politics of Oceania or comparative regional studies, especially given the relevance of themes to Asian, African and Latin American contexts

The structural advantages of polymers and biomimetic properties of lipids enable higher encapsulation of drugs and controlled release profile. Lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles have been prepared for co-delivery of curcumin and cisplatin for enhanced cytotoxicity against ovarian cancer.Material and Methods: Chitosan, cisplatin, curcumin, Lipoid S75 were selected as structural components and ionic gelation method was used for preparation of LPHNPs. Nanoparticles were formed via ionic interaction of positively charged chitosan and negatively charged lipid. Results: The optimized nanoparticles were of 225 nm with cationic charge. The encapsulation efficiency was greater than 80% with good drug loading. The drug release profile showed controlled release behavior of both curcumin and cisplatin simultaneously and the absence of burst release. The in vitro therapeutic efficacy and cellular association was evaluated using A2780 ovarian cell lines. To further investigate therapeutic efficacy, we developed 3D spheroids as tumor model to mimic the in vivo conditions. The cytotoxicity and uptake of co-loaded LPHNPs were evaluated on 3D spheroids and results indicated increased chemosensitization and enhanced therapeutic efficacy of co-loaded LPHNPs.Conclusion: Lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles could be a suitable platform for co-delivery of curcumin and cisplatin for enhanced cytotoxic effect on ovarian cell lines. Keywords: co-delivery, chemosensitization, curcumin, cisplatin, enhanced therapeutic output

In the 1930s the Bolivian and Mexican governments decreed the nationalization of their respective oil industries, thus starting a juncture of tensions in their relationship with the United States government and companies. In both cases foreign companies quit the respective host countries, but Bolivia was less successful than Mexico in maintaining its initial stand in face of the external pressure. Following a most-similar-system design strategy to compare both cases of asymmetrical confrontation, which share a similar set of conditions regarding simultaneity, starting causes of the conflict, actors involved and international context, we contend that the difference in the confrontation's resolution is mainly attributable to differing domestic variables. Controlling for the similarity in external conditions, we show that the building and maintenance of a strong internal support coalition was critical for the capacity of the weakest part to advance its interest in an asymmetrical atmosphere.

However, traditional IFAs are commonly qualitative or semi-quantitative and are very limited for the efficient testing of samples in field diagnostics. Here, we overcome these limitations by developing a quantum dots (QDs)-based fluorescent IFA for the quantitative detection of C-reactive proteins (CRP). CRP, the well-known diagnostic marker for acute viral and bacterial infections, was used as a model analyte to demonstrate performance and sensitivity of our developed QDs-based IFA. QDs capped with both polyethylene glycol (PEG) and glutathione were used as fluorescent labels for our IFAs. The presence of the surface PEG layer, which reduced the non-specific protein interactions, in conjunction with the inherent optical properties of QDs, resulted in lower background signal, increased sensitivity, and ability to detect CRP down to 0.79 mg/L with only 5 µL serum sample. In addition, the developed assay is simple, fast and can quantitatively detect CRP with a detection limit up to 200 mg/L. Clinical test results of our QD-based IFA are well correlated with the traditional latex enhance immune-agglutination aggregation. The proposed QD-based fluorescent IFA is very promising, and potentially will be adopted for multiplexed immunoassay and in field point-of-care test. Keywords: C-reactive proteins, point-of-care test, Glutathione capped QDs, PEGylation

This thesis seeks primarily to analyze the views expressed on peacekeeping from March 1, 1992 to March 31, 1993 by Canadian elites, the press, Members of Parliament and government officials. After a brief introduction of the topic in Chapter One, Chapter Two examines the literature on peacekeeping from 1948 to 1992. This investigation reveals that the peacekeeping debate during this time period was narrowly focused on a limited range of peacekeeping subjects. As well, this chapter shows how major peacekeeping events spurred a change in opinion of informed servers on the utility of peacekeeping. Chapter Three discusses the methodology (content analysis) employed in analyzing the current debate on peacekeeping. Chapter Four sets out to examine the overall nature of the current peacekeeping debate. The findings indicate an precedented depth to the debate on peacekeeping. Many new themes were prominent in the discussion. In addition, older peacekeeping themes were debated from new perspectives. An increased interest was shown amongst observers in Canadian-related peacekeeping themes. The data also reveal, however, that a number of peacekeeping themes were neglected. Finally, decidedly mixed views are discovered on a continued Canadian presence in UN missions. Chapter Five analyzes each forum of debate separately. This chapter finds that while there was a similar amount of attention given to the most frequently discussed themes overall by each forum, a considerable divergence occurred on other themes. In addition, there were fairly sharp differences of opinion on Canada's participation in certain UN missions. Chapter Six concludes by offering a number of policy recommendations for the Canadian government in the peacekeeping domain. These prescriptions seek to ensure that peacekeeping will be a central component of Canada's foreign and defence policy in the future.Dept. of History, Philosophy, and Political Science.
