Singapur gilt als Paradebeispiel nachholender wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung. Der 262 qkm kleine Stadtstaat mit seinen zweieinhalb Millionen Einwohnern erregt heute nicht nur durch seine ökonomischen Erfolge, sondern auch durch seine politische Kultur internationale Aufmerksamkeit, und zwar sowohl in den Medien als auch in der Wissenschaft. Der vorliegende Beitrag führt die Erfolge Singapurs und anderer ostasiatischer Länder auf deren kulturelle Tradition zurück. Der Autor spricht von einem "konfuzianischen Kapitalismus" (Tu Wei-ming) oder von der "konfuzianischen Kommandowirtschaft". Was an den wirtschaftlichen Erfolgen Ostasiens "konfuzianisch" ist bzw. sein soll, wird am Beispiel Singapurs untersucht. (ICE)

During the winter of 1988-1989 Chinese intellectuals engaged in a debate about "neo-authoritarianism". They frequently referred to the views of Samuel P. Huntington about the importance of developing strong government before spreading democracy. This article examines that debate in the context of Huntington's views and China's Confucian traditions. Huntington expressed hope that by gradually introducing democratic habits to its political culture and promoting rapid economic change China's intellectuals and authorities might lay the basis for a modernized economy and democracy, with minimal polarization. Since the crackdown at Tiananmen Square he inclines towards pessimism that Confucian culture can democratize, and emphasizes a need for organized resistance if change is to occur. The debaters suggested that China's economic growth will be constricted unless top leaders and the public can limit official corruption, but stopped short of advocating what Huntington defines as democracy. This article proposes that modernization's requirements for limit on government may give leaders an incentive to introduce measured aspects of democratization, without a change in regime. That would require some organized confrontation and negotiation with leadership circles. (AJPS/DÜI)

The author examines political culture of the Confucian state, conflicts among basic democratic principles, Sun Yat-Sen's doctrine to integrate Western democracy with the legacy of Chinese tradition and Mao Zedong's failure in radical communism. The author believes that the Chinese acceptance of communism is an aberration in the historical evolution of "democracy and science". (DÜI-Sen)

Since the end of the Cultural Revolution, mainland China has gradually opened its doors to cultural and economic exchanges with the outside world. The resulting huge influx of Western cultural influences has unavoidably led to clashes with the traditional culture. In the midst of this conflict of cultures, some mainland writers have begun to turn back to their traditional roots. This has given rise to a new trend of "roots literature" since 1985. This study examines the attitudes of three writers (Wang An-i, Cheng I and Mo Yen) toward confucianism in their novellas. (DÜI-Sen)

The study takes a look at the respect accorded to Confucius and the role of confucianism in the PRC today, the impact of confucianism on Chinese society and history. The author thinks that it is a puzzle to many Chinese that although Europeans have expressed lavish praise of and shown intense interest in Chinese art, their moral tradition has been so strangely minimized or ignored. The author examines in this paper how the moral tradition is presented in schools of Taiwan. He identifies and makes explicit the uniqueness of the Chinese moral tradition as understood by current educational authorities in Taiwan. (DÜI-Sen)

Ursachen und Hintergründe der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung im ost- und südostasiatischen Raum. Es geht aber auch um die negativen Folgen dieses Modernisierungsprozesses. Die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung im ost- und südostasiatischen Raum ist beeindruckend und steht im Kontrast zu Stagnationstendenzen in den Industrieländern und anderen Entwicklungsregionen der Welt. Nicht weniger bemerkenswert als die Wachstumsdynamik ist die gleichzeitige Verringerung der sozialen Ungleichheit, so daß die Rede von "Wachstum mit Verteilungsgerechtigkeit" ist. Das Buch arbeitet Hintergründe und Ursachen dieses "Wirtschaftswunders" heraus. Einzelne Beiträge lenken den Blick allerdings auf aktuelle und potentiell negative Folgen der Modernisierung.
