A new factor in the question of Cyprus, Turkey's path towards Europe is littered with difficult questions, one of which is the problem of Cyprus. Since the first of May, 2004, the Republic of Cyprus, not yet reunified, is a full member of the EU – yet how can a candidate for membership in the EU militarily occupy part of another member country ? The Cyprus question represents a game of power politics between four players : Brussels, Ankara, Athens and Nicosia. But in this game, one of the players is weaker than the others – the Greeks in Cyprus. Once again, they may be forced to pay the price for a coming together between Athens and Ankara, a proposition that has become more economical than political. They have, however, the right of veto. Do they have the power to use it ?

AbstractCrucial information on the pandemic's spread has been gathered by monitoring the trend of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. This surveillance has highlighted that the initial concentration is a critical step of the analytical procedure due to the low viral titer that may be present in this matrix. This paper presents the results of the evaluation of two different wastewater concentration protocols to determine the most efficient and cost-effective. The two methods tested were the following: (a) a biphasic separation system with PEG-dextran and (b) a PEG/NaCl precipitation protocol. Other aspects of the detection method were also investigated including the influence of storage temperature on virus recovery and the heat treatment of pasteurization, which aims to make samples safer for operators and the environment. The PEG/NaCl precipitation method was found to perform better than the biphasic separation system, allowing for more sensitive identification of the presence of the virus and the detection of a higher viral titer than that identified with the biphasic separation in all results. Storage of the samples at 4.3±0.2°C for up to 3 weeks did not adversely affect the virus titer and the pasteurization pre-treatment increases operator safety and maintains the identification of the viral concentration.

FEUTURE EU 28 Country Report Cyprus The Government of the Republic of Cyprus generally supports Turkey's accession to the European Union (EU). That support however is not unconditional. Nicosia blocks some important chapters in the EU's accession negotiations with Turkey. There are basically two main reasons behind that mixed political posture. The management of conflict has long been of concern to social scientists, urban planners and community-minded citizens. While differing mechanisms of managing ethno-national or ethno-linguistic tensions exist, few studies advance our understanding of how conflicts are actually managed -- in other words, the study of ethnic peace. "Public Administration in Contested Societies" draw on the experiences of two differing examples of ethnic peace: Belfast and Brussels in the expectation that other contested cities such as Kirkuk, Jerusalem, Nicosia or Mostar, who may one day consider power-sharing as a form of governance, may learn from what have been categorised as sites of successful power-sharing. While there are few studies of ethnic peace, fewer studies again seek to understand the role of the elite level bureaucrat in sustaining this peace. The book ascertains the extent of discretion available to the bureaucratic elite and further, through determining core beliefs, establishes how this discretion is employed.

This study aims to present the results from the analysis of high resolution multispectral satellite and aerial images (WorldView-2) and RGB images from Google Earth© engine in order to map and diachronically monitor sites of archaeological interest that are endangered from looting. The research concerns the archaeological landscape of Ayios Mnason in Politico village, located in Nicosia district, where more than ten looted tombs have been identified. Some of these tombs have been disturbed in the past, while others by more recent illegal activities, detected in depth of more than three meters below ground surface. Image processing and in situ investigations evidenced that this phenomenon is not isolated, since other areas in the western part of the case study under examination in this paper, have been also disturbed. Overall, it is evident that image analysis and processing of high resolution multispectral satellite datasets, can be used for systematic monitoring of areas with archaeological interest, in order to protect and safeguard cultural heritage against illegal archaeological activities.

The purpose of this research is -within the frame of opinions by form teachers working in primary schools in Northern Cyprus- reviewing problems faced by the students coming from different cultural backgrounds and reviewing proposals to solve such problems, in addition to considering Turkish grades on foreign students' report cards to determine Turkish learning levels of them. This study was carried out using a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods as a base to understand the present situation. Within the scope of the purposeful sampling in the research, 40 classroom teachers from 5 primary schools from the Nicosia area were reached by using criterion sampling and maximum diversity techniques. A total of 120 foreign students were also reached. Open-ended questions were asked to teachers through semi-structured interview forms. The answers were interpreted by thematicizing. As a result of the study, problems faced by students from different cultures according to the opinions of teachers were grouped as; educational problems, communication problems, curriculum problems, problems related to family, and general problems. It is suggested to have special language programs for students from different cultural backgrounds.

Cyprus is a divided country affected by long-term conflict between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, but a meeting among key politicians in Switzerland in 2017 raised hopes that the 43-year division would come to an end. Ahead of this meeting, peace protests organised by Unite Cyprus Now (UCN) erupted in Nicosia urging politicians to find a solution. This study explores how the UCN protest signage was used during the demonstrations and how protesters' practices intersected across physical and digital spaces. Data was collected through an interview with a UCN peace activist, digital manifestations of the UCN protest signage online and a three-year ethnographic monitoring of the protest site. The data analysis, informed by Mediated Discourse Analysis, reveals that UCN's spatial and media practices supported activism work by enacting resistance, mobilising protests, sharing news from the ground, and circulating to local and global audiences counter-discourses of unity and peace. At the same time, social actors against the UCN initiative used the affordances of digital media to resemiotise the UCN protest signage, change its meaning and re-circulate hegemonic nationalist discourses.
