Socio-ecological models of victimization reporting incorporate normative constraints and instrumental considerations at the individual and contextual levels. Drawing on this model, we explore factors related to students' willingness to report problem behaviors that they might observe in school. Data obtained from student and teacher/administrator surveys and administrative data are used to explore these relationships. We find that individual-level factors are the primary determinants of reporting attitudes, but school context is also important. Students are more willing to report misbehavior in schools with democratic authority structures and consistent enforcement of school rules. Attitudes toward reporting are less favorable when the school culture is supportive of a street code, and the effect of street code culture is fully explained by students' personal norms and experiences. We also find evidence that personal adherence to a street code moderates the effect of school context on reporting attitudes. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
Tutkimuksen päämääränä on antaa suuntaviivoja kulttuurisen ulottuvuuden sisällyttämiseen vieraiden kielten opetukseen Kiinassa, erityisesti 11-18 -vuotiaiden opetukseen. Tutkimukselle on tarvetta, sillä Kiinasta puuttuu akateeminen pohdinta kulttuurin opetuksesta vieraan kielen opetuksessa. Tällöin poliittinen ideologia vaikutti vieraan kielen opetukseen Kiinassa. Lisäksi opettajakunta Kiinassa alkoi kirjoittaa omia oppikirjojaan maanlaajuiseen käyttöön 11-18 -vuotiaiden opetukseen. Vieraan kielen opetuksessa vallinneen poliittisen ideologian vuoksi oppikirjoja, erityisesti niitä, joita käytettiin 1950-luvun loppupuolelta 1970-luvun loppupuolelle, dominoi oppijoiden oma syntyperäinen kulttuuri ja siis erityisesti poliittinen kulttuuri. Yhtymäkohtia on erityisen vaikea löytää 11-18 - vuotiaiden vieraiden kielten opetukseen. Jotta tutkielman väitteet perustuisivat konkreettiseen tilannekuvaukseen, kartoitettiin Kiinassa vallitsevia asenteita kulttuurin opetusta kohtaan kielten opetuksessa. Tämä tapahtui kyselylomakkeiden avulla. Otos sisälsi 373 11-18 -vuotiasta oppilasta, 176 samanikäisten oppilaiden englannin kielen opettajaa ja 51 ohjaavaa opettajaa useista opettajankoulutusyliopistoista ja muista yliopistoista. Informantit olivat useista Shandongin alueen kaupungeista. ; The teaching of culture in language teaching is a simple yet very complex issue that has been debated for over a century. Foreign language teaching makes only a small contribution to the general education if is it taught in its narrow linguistic notion only. The purpose of this study is therefore to survey the development of foreign language teaching in both West and China, specifically in relation to teaching cultural content, to chart attitudes to such teaching in Chinese classrooms, and to suggest ways of introducing cultural content systematically based on theories of culture and education. Language is part of a culture; language is deeply embedded in a culture; language and culture are not separable, and we cannot teach a language without teaching a culture. Therefore the teaching of culture since the early years has been integrated in language teaching programmes and teaching materials in one way or another. However, in the West, although the integration of culture in language teaching has a longer history, and a package of sophisticated theories have been developed, the profession is still probing ways of applying them into real classroom activities and teaching materials as well. The acquisition of a foreign language in China has always been valued both socially and politically throughout history, which partly paves the way for the purpose of this study. The teaching of a foreign language is largely pragmatic-oriented and the motivation from the educational values of foreign language education is not much discussed. Systematic discussions of such basic concepts as the definition of culture in relation to the teaching of culture at a given level of language learning, and the cultural aims in language teaching are not frequently undertaken even in the published works. The link to the secondary school foreign language teaching is especially rare. In order to chart the Chinese attitudes towards the teaching of culture in language teaching, a survey was made of 373 secondary school pupils, 176 secondary schoolteachers of English and 51 teacher-trainers from several universities. The sample informants were from several cities in Shandong Province. The questionnaire consists of four categories of questions, asking (1) whether the informants had learned/taught cultures of the English-speaking countries while learning/teaching the language; (2) the informants to offer their definitions of culture; (3) the informants how they view the role of culture in their learning/teaching of the language, (4) how the informants pass the cultural information on to their students, and (5) the teacher informants whether there are any problems in their teaching of culture in their language teaching. To obtain consistent and authentic background information, we also asked the informants to specify the cultural aspects in relevant places. All the responses to the questions were analysed through both qualitative and quantitative methods. Our research findings show that a clear majority of informants give a strong support for the role of culture in language teaching. However, the findings also show that many informants' understanding of the term 'culture' and the current language teaching theories as well is very vague. Then two English series (1982-series and 1993-series) used in Chinese secondary school were analysed, using Risager's model of evaluating the European elementary textbook cultural contents. The analysis shows that the two series do talk about culture, but rather superficially. No real picture of the target country, people and their way of life is given. The result is disappointing, which, we think, is also rooted in the weak understanding of the language teaching theory. On the basis of the above a package of ideas was offered as how to put the issue of teaching culture in language teaching into practice. we first suggested a specific model of teaching language and culture in Chinese secondary schools. Then we argued for an official place for the teaching of culture in Chinese foreign language education. We then argued that cultural aims in foreign language teaching must be made crystal clear from the beginning. In addition, such concrete matters as a body of knowledge, implementing techniques and means of testing, etc. were discussed. However, we also identified some problems, which echo the informants'. They include the teachers' qualification of teaching culture in teaching the language, the lack of teaching materials and the lack of time, etc. Nonetheless, all these problems can be partly solved by our suggestion of rewriting the textbooks aimed for the new dimension of language teaching and compiling new teachers books parallel to the pupils', which should contain much more cultural information. At the same time we also suggested the retraining of teachers for this dimension of language teaching. Another crucial problem is the lack of research efforts and tradition in language teaching itself and the language teaching theory as well. Thus we also suggested that more research work should be undertaken by the Chinese profession themselves so as to lay a sound foundation for the teaching of culture in language teaching in China. In the light of all above, the significance of this study may lie in that it not only enriches the previous discussion of the teaching of culture from the intercultural communication direction, but also opens up new perspectives alongside the intercultural understanding dimension, and fills in several gaps within the discussion of the matter in the Chinese educational context. At the same time, the detailed presentation and discussion of the Chinese foreign language teaching and the research work carried out may elicit more informed and systematic discussion of the matter from the Western scholars as to how to improve it and make it a systematic and consistent practice in the Chinese actual classrooms. Moreover, our critical comments upon the work done in the West and what we suggested to improve the situation in China might bring about further thinking of the issue as to how to finally make it a consistent practice in the Western classrooms as well.

The integration of digital technologies in the school system has been the object of international public and scientific debate for some years now; it has been at the heart of educational policies as a formative goal to guarantee greater social inclusion with respect to the difficulties and social, cultural and economic inequalities that characterise students' daily life. However, the study of this matter is not limited to a simple assessment of the impact of its infrastructural and technological implementation, which represents one of the primary investments in the school system of the Italian Government. Its goal, indeed, is to promote a critical reflection on the entrenchment and dissemination of a digital culture, as it is recognised in the practices of teachers and school principals, and which calls for new ways of planning, communicating, and relating to students and the other individuals involved in the school system, as well as organizing classroom activities. In what ways do Digital Education methods and strategies currently adopted in schools rest on a methodological and pedagogical approach derived from the digital integration process? Are they able to guide the school vision, objectives and educational methods to inspire the action of every single teacher? This essay presents a reflection on the development of digital culture in the Italian education system after the first experimental years of the Piano Nazionale della Scuola Digitale (National Plan for a Digital School System) (2015), and it mainly focuses on testing the inclusion of digital skills into teachers' daily teaching practises. Through the presentation of the first results obtained by the national survey "Verso la scuola digitale" (Towards a digital school), this essay offers a reflection on the digital skills gained by the interviewed teachers and on their ability to contextualise these skills and knowledge in their daily teaching activities.
With the advances of globalisation and technology, English dominates international politics, the economy and culture. Spoken by over a quarter of the world's population and enhanced by the presence of the Internet, it enjoys an unparalleled dominance in global communication and has affected people's lives across the globe. This study explores the perception of Indonesian high school students towards the impact of English on the Indonesian language and culture amids concerns about the hegemony of the international language and the country's efforts to maintain its national language. As many as 333 students from five schools in Salatiga, Central Java, participated in this research by filling out a Likert-scaled questionnaire. Unlike previous studies investigating a similar issue in the context of Indonesia, the study demonstrates strongly divided responses from the participants towards English. The students' religions and majors were also shown to be significant factors affecting the responses. Conducted on a wider scope, this research overall reveals stronger perceived tensions between the national language/culture and English than what has been demonstrated in previous research.
This article draws attention to radical possibilities in classroom work with pop culture texts when teachers and students acknowledge and explore the micro-level political work people undertake when negotiating meanings for those texts. Data from a year-long ethnographic study of pop culture in a tenth grade English classroom in the U.S. illustrates some ways youth used embodied pop culture texts like clothing, shoes, and accessories to negotiate racial and ethnic identities in the classroom. The author employs post-structural performance theory to analyze a moment of discursive conflict between two students - an event when categories of race, gender, and class circulated discussion of a pair of earrings. She argues that similar struggles over pop culture text meanings are events when people practice performative politics, i.e., performing, reproducing, and reinventing ways of being in school and the world. Such uses of pop culture texts carry radical possibilities for classroom participants and curriculum.
