The decision of the Dominican Constitutional Tribunal to deny citizenship to the descendants of undocumented migrants born within the national territory -particularly of Haitian origin- constitutes a violation of human rights, and in fact condemns many Dominicans to the category of stateless. This has led the Caribbean nation to be targeted by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. This article analyzes the background, the political context, and the consequences of the resurgence of nationalism and anti-Haitian xenophobia in the Dominican Republic. (Nueva Soc/GIGA)

Moreover, the author analyzes norms of Russian dual citizenship legislation from the point of view of their correspondence to international norms and foreign experience.

En esta aportación sugerimos vínculos y convergencias entre los conocimientos, propósitos, principios, procedimientos y valores que se plantean en la alfabetización mediática e informativa con la educación para la paz, en el contexto de la educación para la ciudadanía plural y democrática y el desarrollo de la cultura de paz. ; In this approach we suggest links and convergences between knowledge, aims, principles, procedures and values that arise in media and informational literacy with peace education, in context of plural and democratic citizenship education and the culture of peace development.

Communication scholars hold special knowledge and occupy positions of power. This article examines the question of whether communication scholars have particular responsibilities to assist in the propagation of truth, enhance the debate on ideas, provide insight into the universe of media technology, and engage in public citizenship. Drawing on philosophical and political economy texts, the author brings the political economy tradition into Denzin's "critical pedagogy" project. Political economy's challenge is to expand its contribution to educational reform and deepen its commitment beyond class to race, gender, and ethnicity.

Unlike the United Kingdom and other nations that mandate youth participation to some degree, U.S. policies instead tend to inhibit child participation rather than encourage it. Given these policy contexts, it can be challenging to locate spaces where robust opportunities for democratic participation and student voice exist. We use this article as an opportunity to examine the disciplinary, philosophical and methodological approaches that have framed youth participation in youth contexts. We conclude by identifying critical issues of citizenship and belonging that must be considered in participatory research.

Der Klimawandel, in ungleichen Lebensverhältnissen entstanden, trifft die in globalisierten Lokalitäten lebenden Menschen, Frauen und Männer, in ungleicher Weise. Er verknüpft sich mit vorbefindlichen sozio-ökonomischen und politischen Asymmetrien, greift tief in geschlechtergeordnete Lebenszusammenhänge ein und beschädigt sie. Die Autorin nimmt in ihrem Beitrag die klimapolitischen Durchsetzungsinstrumente des Kyoto-Protokolls, den Handel mit Emissionsrechten und den so genannten Clean Development Mechanismen (CDM) in den Blick und diskutiert die Frage, inwiefern der Schutz des öffentlichen Gutes Klima über marktorientierte Steuerungsansätze gewährleistet werden kann. Die Autorin bearbeitet diese Frage, indem sie zwei Konzepte der politischen Steuerung - private governance und inclusive citizenship - gegenüberstellt und aus einer Geschlechter- und demokratietheoretischen Perspektive reflektiert. Dabei kritisiert die Autorin den "private governance"-Diskurs und die in diesem Zusammenhang stehenden marktorientierten Lösungsansätze in der Klimapolitik und plädiert für eine Orientierung an Menschen- und BürgerInnenrechten bei der demokratischen Suche nach klimapolitischen Lösungen. Social appropriation of knowledge is a theme of recent concern by scientific communities, governments and mass media and it is assumed as a commitment to the community. This article aims to contribute to the theme from the archives. First: as social appropriation places of the socio–cultural knowledge through the retrieval of memory for the construction of identity and citizenship. Second: as information units supporting social appropriation processes of the scientific–technological knowledge, by the implementation of scientific archives in new environments like the virtual and the digital.

Successive governments have encouraged local participation and active citizenship as methods of addressing the 'democratic deficit'. This paper reports on a campaign against 'fracking' (the use of hydraulic fracturing in shale gas extraction) in South Wales. It asks: has the campaign addressed the democratic deficit, built community capacity and improved the quality of governmental decision making? The paper provides a partial answer to this question by exploring the experiences and perspectives of the participants and how their views changed in the light of their involvement in the campaign.

The aim of this article is to investigate the nature and the specificities of a new status that, as a consequence of the current "crisis" of national citizenship, is purchasing an increasing importance: residence. More in detail, the object of this paper is constituted by the attempt to understand whether the process of "location of the rights" that is taking place in many European states, and particularly in the Italian context, is shaping an inclusionary system of 'local citizenships' or, rather, an exclusionary one, based on a particularistic idea of membership.
