The growing interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) has led to renewed attention to the relationship between businesses and key stakeholders, such as NGOs or local communities. Curiously, however, one societal actor - trade unions - is largely missing from such discussions, while the employment relations (ER) literature seldom engages with the concept. This situation is all the more remarkable since - at least in continental Europe - unions have traditionally played a prominent role in defending the interests of one key stakeholder, the employee. Written by dedicated experts in their field, this book addresses a key gap in both the CSR and ER literatures, namely trade union policies towards CSR as well as their engagement with particular CSR initiatives and the challenges they face in doing so. The research covers 12 European countries, which, when taken together, constitute a representative sample of industrial relations structures across the continent. This book will be essential reading for scholars and students of international business, employment relations, public policy and CSR.

AbstractThe size and visibility of companies in the telecommunication sector are important factors affecting their social responsibility performance.

This paper examines people's understanding, expectations and assessment of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of private banks, especially Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd. (DBBL), one of the largest private banks in Bangladesh. This study has been conducted among the stakeholders and beneficiaries of the Dutch Bangla Bank Limited. Surveys have been conducted using structured questionnaires to critically examine the subjective perceptions of the meaning, reasons and various aspects of CSR tasks of DBBL in Bangladesh. It has been found out that common people either do not have clear understanding about CSR activities or are not really concerned about the social responsibilities of the corporate organizations. The expected outcome of CSR activities, as has been stated in the memorandum and commitments of the corporate houses, has yet to be achieved. This study suggests that a more comprehensive and humane involvement of the common people in the CSR activities is required, which would not only fulfill the intended goals and objectives of the corporate organizations but also ensure a successful and sustainable development of the society.

We have a responsibility to obey COVID-19 rules, in order to minimize risk. Yet it is still seen as rude to challenge people who do not respect those rules, when in fact the opposite is true; it is rude to increase risk to others. In this paper I analyse the relationship between risk, responsibility, and rudeness by analysing the evolution of the main governmental slogans and rules and explore the complex relationship between simplicity, safety, and perceived fairness of these rules, and how these features in turn influence the extent to which we act responsibly. I begin by exploring the relationship between rudeness and risk in our interactions about coronavirus, before going on to analyse the importance of clear rules in minimizing tension between us, illustrating the argument with various slogans including "stay at home," "stay alert," and the now infamous "rule of six," which is actually at least three different rules. Ultimately, we are faced with a paradox: people annoyed about complex/unfair rules are less likely to obey them, even if that means rules will apply for longer and even though it was noncompliance with earlier simpler rules that means new rules are necessary. And if rules make less or no sense it is harder to try to get people to follow them in your own capacity as a citizen; it is hard to police rules that are seen as arbitrary or unfair.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting by banks in the developing economy of Bangladesh. This paper also aims to examine the users' perceptions relating to CSR disclosures issues.Design/methodology/approachThe study collected two types of data. First the annual reports of 20 selected banking companies, which are listed in Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), were considered. A questionnaire was also used to investigate the level of users' understanding and their perception of CSR reporting.FindingsThe principal findings are twofold: first, the study shows that the selected banking companies did some (albeit little) CSR reporting on a voluntary basis. Second, that the user groups are in favor of CSR reporting, and would like to see more disclosure. The current disclosures by the selected banks, however, are not ample at all to measure the social responsiveness of the organizations.Originality/valueThe paper provides useful informaiton on users' perceptions relating to CSR disclosures issues.

We investigated the effects of authentic leadership on follower performance in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities by drawing upon social identity theory. With data from 340 participants who took part in CSR activities in a large Korean firm, we tested the hypotheses that team identification would mediate the positive relationship between authentic leadership and follower performance, and that psychological safety would positively moderate this relationship. We used the PROCESS macro (Model 7) for SPSS for data analysis. Our hypotheses were supported by the results, which theoretically contribute to authentic leadership literature and, from a practical standpoint, provide an effective way to enhance follower performance in CSR activities.

Research addressing the relationships between corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and consumers-asstakeholders' perceptions, attitudes and behaviours is dispersed over a range of topics, subsumed under different marketing concepts, and in general surprisingly under-researched given the centrality of CSR in both the normative management literature and public discourse. This paper gives an overview of the past two decades of research on consumers, marketing and CSR, taking the classical consumer decision-making model as frame of classification. The analysis reveals a significant methodology factor and a serious lack of knowledge concerning the consequences of strategic CSR activities.

AbstractThis paper assesses how companies belonging to controversial and non‐controversial industries differ in their adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) information and involvement strategies. Drawing on legitimacy and stakeholder theories, a thematic content analysis of the websites of companies listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Word Index is used to establish a set of measures for CSR communication strategies aimed at fostering stakeholder engagement. Companies in controversial industries are found to be more likely to adopt a CSR information strategy than those in non‐controversial industries but do not attempt to create stakeholder involvement. The results highlight the importance for communication managers in controversial organizations of considering information strategies as a meta‐level of engagement and of implementing an involvement strategy to mitigate the level of controversy. The study offers a wider conceptualization of the business activities of controversial industries and contributes to the debate on stakeholder engagement for organizational legitimacy.

AbstractWe examine how forming cross‐border alliances with US firms influences the corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance of their foreign partner firms. Analyzing a sample across 39 countries between 2002 and 2018, we find that these foreign firms experience higher future CSR performance, with a notable 6.46% increase compared with those without such alliances. Moreover, this effect is stronger in foreign firms from countries with weaker governance institutions, lower social norms, and worse economic conditions. Also, foreign firms with lower governance quality, higher market competition, and weaker innovation capacity show a pronounced improvement in CSR performance after alliances. The improved CSR performance also leads to higher firm value and better earnings quality in these foreign firms. Overall, we highlight the role of cross‐border alliances in facilitating the attainment of broader economic and sustainable governance objectives.
