"This book demonstrates how decolonial theory and critical race theory can be used together to better explain global social problems than either could alone. It applies them in combination to theorize capital accumulation, the rise of right-wing populist nationalism, the COVID pandemic, and the climate crisis"--

"The book explores the impact of manuscript remarks during the year 1929 on the development of Wittgenstein's thought. Although its intention is to put the focus specifically on the manuscripts, the book is not purely exegetical. The contributors generate important new insights for understanding Wittgenstein's philosophy and his place in the history of analytic philosophy. Wittgenstein's writings from the years 1929-1930 are valuable, not simply because they marked Wittgenstein's return to academic philosophy after a seven-year absence, but because these works indicate several changes in his philosophical thinking. The chapters in this volume clarify the significance of Wittgenstein's return to philosophy in 1929. In Part 1, the contributors address different issues in the philosophy of mathematics, e.g. Wittgenstein's understanding of certain aspects of intuitionism and his commitment to verificationism, as well as his idea of "a new system". Part 2 examines Wittgenstein's philosophical development and his understanding of philosophical method. Here the contributors examine particular problems Wittgenstein dealt with in 1929, e.g. the colour-exclusion problem, and the use of thought experiments as well as his relationship to Frank Ramsey and philosophical pragmatism. Part 3 features essays on phenomenological language. These chapters address the role of spatial analogies and the structure of visual space. Finally, Part 4 includes one chapter on Wittgenstein's few manuscript remarks about ethics and religion and relates it to his Lecture on Ethics. Wittgenstein's Philosophy in 1929 will be of great interest to scholars and advanced students working on Wittgenstein and the history of analytic philosophy"--

In December 1941, German police and their local collaborators shot 2,749 Jews at the beach in Šķēde, near Liepāja, Latvia. Twelve photographs were taken at the scene. These now-infamous images show people in extreme distress, sometimes without clothing. Some capture the very moments when women and children confronted their imminent deaths, while others show their dead bodies. They are nearly unbearable to look at – so why should we? This book offers a multidimensional response to this question. While photographs are central to our memory of modern historical events, they often inhabit an ambivalent intellectual space. What separates the sincere desire to understand from voyeuristic curiosity? Comprehending atrocity photographs requires viewers to place themselves in the very positions of the perpetrators who took the images. When we engage with these photographs, do we risk replicating the original violence? In this tightly organized book, scholars of history, photography, language, gender, photojournalism, and pedagogy examine the images of the Šķēde atrocity along with other difficult images, giving historical, political, and ethical depth to the acts of looking and interpreting. With a foreword by Edward Anders, who narrowly escaped the December 1941 shooting, this book represents an original approach to an iconic series of Holocaust photographs. This book will contribute to compelling debates in the emerging field of visual history, including the challenges and responsibilities of using photographs to teach about atrocity.
"From famously humble origins in founder Jeff Bezos's garage, Amazon has grown to become one of the most successful businesses in history, able to deliver virtually anything to virtually anywhere thanks to its vast worldwide network of fulfillment centers. Unsustainable looks inside the company's warehouses to reveal that the rise of Amazon, and warehousing more generally, is made possible by the exploitation of workers' labor and communities' resources, including the natural environment. Juliann Emmons Allison and Ellen Reese expose the real-world repurcussions of these pernicious practices through a chilling case study of the socioeconomic and environmental harms associated with the largely unchecked growth of warehousing within Inland Southern California, one of the nation's largest logistics hubs, where Amazon is the largest private-sector employer. Tracing the rise of grassroots resistance to Amazon and the warehouse industry by workers and communities across this region, the country, and the globe, Unsustainable provides fresh insight into one of the most important and far-reaching struggles of our time"--

"The Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka in 2019, just a decade after the the end of the ethnonationalist insurgency led by the Hindu Tamil Tigers, targeted Roman Catholic and Pentecostal churches. Initially attributed to the Islamic State, they were in fact the work of politicized Sinhala Buddhist revivalists alarmed by the expansionary encroachment of charismatic Christian groups. These populist Buddhists question the social, political, economic, and religious motives and values of newly converted Sri Lankan Christians, claiming that the vulnerable poor are duped by untrustworthy charismatic "peddlers" of the prosperity gospel as part of a socialization process that transforms them into a fraudulent antinational movement. Conversion itself is a disruptor, a quick-fix radical salvational orientation to god's grace, in direct opposition to the Buddhist trajectory of moral self-betterment that must unfold over many suffering-filled cycles of death and rebirth. Sri Lanka has been the site of religious hostilities since the colonial era, but, as Mahadev argues, the Buddhist-Pentecostal rivalry, exacerbated by savvy use of media on both sides and by the fear that the promise of grace is especially potent and vital, has resulted in a plethora of innovations and adaptations in theology, cosmology, ritual, and partisan politics that are generative of new religious forms"--
