The current study examined 1316 South Asian youth socialized in progressively Westernized contexts: "traditional" Indian homeland single‐sex schools, "transitional" Indian homeland co‐educational schools, and the immigrant "diaspora" in Canadian schools. Results showed youth in the three contexts were similar on romantic desire. Yet those in increasingly Westernized contexts reported more romantic activities and greater perceived autonomy from parents in partner choice. They were also more likely to consume Western and social media, and possess friends fostering permissive expectations, greater cross‐sex network composition, and intimate communication. Involvement with the global media and friends explained the link between the cultural spectrum and romantic experiences. Implications of global restructuring on romantic experiences, media usage, and friendships are discussed, in consideration of gender.

This writing is trying to parse minority position in system of democracy and in context of Islam. Because actually, the minority fate in the system of democracy is not more comfortable than when the time of Islamic oversight. In the implementation of the democracy system in the state- nation does not always guarantee there is the evenness between majority- minority in the economic rights, politic, even cultural, the same thing also happen in dzimmi concept which is exist in Islam. On the other hand, the issue that has to be concerned in this theme is the reality that there are two classifications of minority; indigenous minority and immigrant minority where each has different characteristics, problem, and relation. This writing will examine the problems occurs.

Against the background of the global competition for talent, the migration of highly skilled people has recently received much attention. Since surveys discovered a high willingness to emigrate of highly qualified Germans of Turkish descent, there has been much discussion on this phenomenon especially in the German media. The policy brief inquires into the motives behind this emigration, examines prerequisites for the immigration and integration of the highly qualified German emigrants of Turkish descent in Turkey and draws a look at aspects of identification and instances of (ethnic) self-attribution. Finally, the question whether the phenomenon of second-generation Turkish immigrants migrating from Germany to Turkey ought to be labeled as "emigration" or "return migration" is discussed.

CARIM-India: Developing a knowledge base for policymaking on India-EU migration ; This report discusses the emergence of a European integration policy with a view to analysing the policy of EU Member States to require third-country immigrants (including Indian nationals) to comply with so-called integration conditions. It examines integration conditions as provided for in EU and national law and their specific role in integration policies. Do integration conditions promote the integration process or do they primarily constitute an obstacle for mobility to the EU? The strike was, among other things, a contest between young immigrant workers who sought to build power and a municipal government that sought to expand its own.3 These opposing goals met with resistance beyond the immediate space of the strike. The actions of young sweatshop workers revealed generational, political, and economic fissures within Philadelphia's Jewish community. Further, the violent response of Mayor John E. Reyburn's administration helped galvanize support for the strike among Philadelphia's club women, suffragists, and female college students. Taking place in distinct spheres of Philadelphia life, the reactions of Reyburn's administration,society women, and members of the Jewish elite to the strike revealed rifts that had already existed in the city.

The mobilization of culturally rooted issues has altered political competition throughout Western Europe. This article analyzes to what extent the mobilization of immigration issues has affected how people identify with politics. Specifically, it analyzes whether voters' left/right self-identifications over the past 30 years increasingly correspond to cultural rather than economic attitudes. This study uses longitudinal data from the Netherlands between 1980 and 2006 to demonstrate that as time progresses, voters' left/right self-placements are indeed more strongly determined by anti-immigrant attitudes than by attitudes towards redistribution. These findings show that the issue basis of left/right identification is dynamic in nature and responsive to changes in the political environment. Adapted from the source document.

In Germany, against the background of demographic chance and a lack in skilled labor, the issue of the recognition and accreditation of qualifications acquired abroad has gained increasing importance. In the past, intransparent procedures for the recognition of such qualifications were a significant cause for immigrants working in professions below their skill level: a frustrating situation for the individuals affected by this situation, and a loss of their skills and talent for the German economy (brain waste). On 1 April 2012 a new law – the Professional Qualifications Assessment Act – entered into force which aims at improving the recognition of qualifications acquired abroad. The policy brief examines the situation before and after the passage of this law.

We explore the effect of offering an open-ended comment field in a Web survey to reduce the
threat of sensitive questions. Two experiments were field in a probability-based Web panel in
the Netherlands. For a set of 10 items on attitudes to immigrants, a random half were offered
the opportunity to explain or clarify their responses, with the hypothesis being that doing so
would reduce the need to choose socially desirable answers, resulting in higher levels of
prejudice. Across two experiments, we find significant effects contrary to our hypothesis – the
opportunity to comment decreased the level of prejudice reported, and longer comments were
associated with more tolerant attitudes among those who were offered the comment field.

Abstract: Although it is well documented that immigrants maintain economic and social ties with their communities of origin through remittances, the role of remittances in asset acquisition for most African countries is yet to be documented. This study provides empirical estimates for the impact of remittances from abroad on housing construction demand in Kenya using time series data for the period 1970–2008. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) modelling process is employed to capture the effect of remittances and other variables on housing construction demand. The computed short‐ and long‐run elasticities indicate that inbound remittances are one of the determinants of housing construction demand in Kenya. Other significant determinants include income, interest rates and urbanization growth.

This article conducts an anthropological reflection on Portuguese legislation concerning immigration control and the concession of nationality, and compares it with Brazilian laws governing the entrance, stay and departure of foreigners, and also the naturalization process in that country. The objective is to use a particular European example of "difference management" and compare it to the current Brazilian legislative context (including proposed law 5655, which is being deliberated by the Brazilian national congress), in an attempt to identify significant similarities or distinctions. Although their contexts are quite different, I believe that the detailed comparison of these bodies of law contributes to understanding contemporary processes for managing international migration and the production of illegality and invisibility of immigrants.

Abstract An inability to borrow affected migration from Europe to North America. This capital constraint is formalized with a life‐cycle model, where agents jointly choose how much to save, the optimal period to finance migration, and whether to migrate. Using a life‐cycle model we show that preference for the home country, the period of adjustment after arrival, and the direct cost of migration affect the savings of migrants, age at migration, and who migrates. These results are discussed in light of wages in Canada and the Netherlands, and the characteristics of Dutch immigrants drawn from ship passenger manifests. Capital constraints delayed migration and help explain the large wage gap between the Netherlands and Canada. JEL classification: J61, N32, N34

The migrations of population are considered to be one of fundamental values in the life of cultures and civilisations . They are regarded as a force that generates social and economic progress, political aspirations, a "school" of attitudes, behaviour, tolerance, entrepreneurship, criticism. At the same time it is pointed out that they should not be a spontaneous phenomena and process. It is essential to prepare oneself for functioning in an immigration reality, for various barriers reveal themselves in it and are overcome by immigrants only with effort. The psychological factor is important in this respect. A number of people encounter difficulties to adapt to a new cultural reality because of their personality (e.g. because of neuroticism, distrust towards the outside world, introvertism).

Humanitarian immigrants and refugees face multiple adjustment tasks and post-settlement support services concentrated in metropolitan areas play an important role. As part of an ongoing commitment, the Australian Government has increasingly supported resettlement in rural and regional areas of the country. Drawing on the experience of Iraqi migrants in Victoria, Australia, we examine some of the conditions that characterize regional resettlement and raise key questions for public health policy. Structural vulnerabilities and discriminations impact upon physical, mental and social wellbeing, leading to further exclusion, with negative long-term implications. The discussion throws light on the issues that migrants and refugees may encounter in other parts within Australia, but are also germane in many countries and highlight the resulting complexity for policy-making.
