This work provides a comprehensive source of information on the diverse historical and contemporary experiences of Latinos and Latinas in the United States. Incorporating key material from the acclaimed four-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States (OUP, 2005), this ground-breaking publication addresses the significant ways in which the Latino and Latina populations have shaped the political, legal, and social institutions of the United States, with new and updated scholarship on political movements and organizations, important legal cases, minority-rights laws, and immigration legislation.

This article engages Germano's film and essay. The author lauds the fundamental thrust of the essay towards achieving scholarly recognition for film projects based on scholarly research. At the same time, the author questions Germano's sharp opposition between analytic and documentary films. He appraises The Other Side of Immigration very favorably, while pointing out that the aesthetic choices and the power of the testimonies do not fall neatly within the categories established by Germano. The author then discusses his own experiences in conjoining historical research and documentary filmmaking.

This paper first looks at the Islamophobia industry and some of its most well know figures. It then looks at relations between Muslims and Non-Muslims in Europe and the United States. I discuss the historical and cultural precedents surrounding Islamic immigration. I show that there are differences in patterns of assimilation between Muslims in the US and Europe. The Islamophobia industry and its impact on geopolitical developments in the Muslim world is also explored. It is concluded that xenophobia in the west ultimately only stifles the democratic processes in the Muslim world.

L'objectif de cet article est de présenter des réflexions analytiques et théoriques sur le dialogue interdisciplinaire entre le droit et la sociologie. La présentation de contradictions et de points de rencontre possibles entre ces deux disciplines peut contribuer à une anthropologie interdisciplinaire qui s'intéresse à l'« immigration » parfois difficilement vécue par ceux et celles qui mobilisent plus d'un domaine académique dans leurs recherches. Cet article s'adresse particulièrement à ces juristes qui entament un dialogue interdisciplinaire et tout spécifiquement à ceux qui font leurs premiers pas sociologiques.

Norwegen und die Slowakei sind beides Länder mit fast gleicher Bevölkerungszahl, aber ziemlich verschiedenen sozioökonomischen Entwicklungen und politischen Systemen. Beide Länder versuchen, den neuen Herausforderungen, die internationale Migration hinsichtlich Instabilität und Unsicherheit mit sich bringt, durch eine bessere Regulierung zu begegnen. Der Beitrag betrachtet die nationalen Entwicklungen der Migrationspolitik in Norwegen und der Slowakei. Zunächst skizziert der Beitrag die historische Entwicklung beider Länder und beschreibt den Wechsel der Länder von der Emigration zur Immigration. Anschließend werden die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und Immigrationspolitiken der beiden Länder beleuchtet. Im Mittelpunkt der weiteren Überlegungen stehen die Integrationspolitiken Norwegens und der Slowakei. Hier analysiert der Beitrag die Arbeitsmarktmobilität, Familienzusammenführung, Bildung und politische Partizipation von Migranten sowie die Regulierung des dauerhaften Aufenthalts und den Zugang zur nationalen Staatsbürgerschaft. Abschließend wirft der Beitrag einen Blick auf die staatlichen Maßnahmen im Bereich Anti-Diskriminierung. (ICB2).

Russian immigrants exerted a significant impact on the formation of the Argentine nation at the turn of XIX and XX centuries. At that time, immigrants from Russia were fourth-largest diaspora in Argentina. Over the past century, immigration from Russia to Argentina showed a pronounced wave pattern that primarily depended on the political developments in Russia. After experiencing a period of cultural and economic prosperity in the early and mid-XX century, modern Russian diaspora in Argentina declined considerably in terms of scope and level of its social influence.

In this article, I argue that the psychological basis of many of the problems associated with immigration can be traced to tangible threats, cultural threats, fears of change, and the negative attitudes and misperceptions that flow from these threats and fears. Concrete suggestions are made for policies at the societal and individual levels that can counteract these problems. In addition, specific programs are suggested to improve relations between residents and immigrants. The article ends with a discussion of some of the psychological processes that underlie improvements in intergroup relations.

The article analyses results of Swedish parliamentary elections in September 2010. The author regards them as another manifestation of the fact that Sweden is losing peculiarity of its social development model. This is a result of the end of an era of two-block party structure of the Riksdag (left and right centers) and of the domination of Social Democrats in the political life of the country. The new third political force – the party of Swedish Democrats which strongly opposes the other culture immigration – is detail regarded.

This article examines the disjuncture between the theory of international refugee protection, human rights and citizenship rights and their practice. Drawing on data from a sub-sample of 500 Zimbabwean migrants taken from a larger survey of 1000 Zimbabweans in South Africa and the UK, it explores the labour market and transnational lives of undocumented migrants and compares them with migrants with other immigration statuses. The article demonstrates that while the protection and rights frameworks exist, in reality undocumented migrants cannot access protection and/or rights.

The aim of this article is to examine Brazil's position in Portuguese foreign policy preference, focusing on the principal directions of Portuguese foreign policy since April 25th, 1974. It focuses on government programs, official visits to Brazil, Portuguese investment in Brazil & the impact of Brazilian immigration on Portugal. Thus, in spite of the transformations required by Portugal's democratization, it will try to show that Portugal's relation with Brazil has subsisted even though there has been more emphasis on rhetoric & symbolism than consistent practice. It is now more important than ever to consider migrant mobilizations and how political communities are constructed. This paper describes how Waling Waling, a migrant domestic workers' organization, and their support group, Kalayaan, forged citizenship 'from below' and waged a successful campaign to change the immigration status of domestic workers in part through turning constraints into opportunities. It also discusses how the logic of state sovereignty can recapture radical takings, and the opportunities and challenges that are faced in the new political climate of migrants as victims of trafficking.
