This book provides a unique study of the practice of traditional reintegrative community justice in a European society, the Parish Hall Enquiry (PHE) in the Channel Island of Jersey. This is an ancient institution, based on an informal hearing and discussion of a reported offence with the alleged offender and other interested parties, carried out by centeniers (honorary police officers elected to one of Jersey's twelve parishes). Helen Miles and Peter Raynor's research, arising from direct observation, contributes to the literature on 'what works' in resolving conflicts and influencing offende.

This research analyzes competency-based management (CNM) in Brazilian electoral justice courts' personnel management (PM). This qualitative study is based on the integrated multiple case study method using data collected from documents and interviews from six courts. It applies the thematic content analysis technique, resulting in five CBM and main PM-related practices in the courts studied. It contends that despite the norms and studies' efforts to make CBM plausible in public organizations, its assimilation has been slow and fragmented. Thus, it evidences the need to expand research and actions in CBM evaluation programs in Public Administration that provide theoretical and practical recommendations for the strategic improvement of PM in the Judiciary System.

Explanations of how and why innocent persons are arrested and convicted for crimes they did not commit, the supportive relationship between police and district attorneys offices that encourages false arrests, and the emotional and financial payoff for those convictions are included in the manuscript. Suggestions on how innocent people can protect themselves from false arrest, conviction and incarceration have been added, and the legal requirements that police and district attorneys violate every time they arrest and convict innocent persons are specifically discussed.

Throughout the western world public opinion has played an important role in shaping criminal justice policy, yet opinion polls demonstrate that the public actually know little about crime and justice. This book, consisting of chapters from leading authorities in the field, is concerned to address this problem, and draws upon research in a number of different countries to address the issues arising from this state of affairs.
