Do the states of the United States matter (or are they of no political consequence)? Using a data set with over 50 thousand respondents, we demonstrate the influence of state political culture on partisanship and ideology. For individuals, we find that the state of residence is an important predictor of partisan and ideological identification, independent of their demographic characteristics. At the aggregate level, state culture dominates state demography as a source of state-to-state differences in opinion. In general, geographic location may be a more important source of opinion than previously thought. One indication of the importance of state culture is that state effects on partisanship and ideology account for about half of the variance in state voting in recent presidential elections.

Differences in political culture have been observed at the cross-national and subnational levels, and political culture corresponds with a wide array of important social and political phenomena. However, possible psychological correlates of political culture are less clear. Building on research in personality psychology and cross-cultural psychology, this study contemplates whether aggregate personality measures compiled in the American states correspond with patterns in political culture. Using measures of personality traits provided by more than 600,000 survey respondents, parallels with state-level measures of citizen ideology, political culture, and civic culture are examined. Possible mechanisms linking personality and political culture are discussed. Adapted from the source document.

Ever since it emerged as a sovereign State, Bangladesh has been in the grip of power politics. Coups have been common, the military has infiltrated the political process, and the political scene is marked by a patron-client culture, one in which black money plays a major role in elections and mastans (goondas) are extensively relied upon to do the bidding of their political masters. Political leaders draw their strength by donning the mantles of the slain charismatic leaders-Sheik Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman; they care little for inner-party democracy, are distanced from the people, and are caught up in an 'enemy discourse", in which each political party reviles the other. Bangladesh's political leaders must work for a genuine democratic culture in the country.

IN AN ANALYSIS OF SOME CURRENT LITERATURE ON THE SUBJECT, THE ARTICLE EXAMINES THE QUESTION OF WHETHER IT IS BETTER TO VIEW POLITICAL CULTURE AS THE "SUBJECTIVE ORIENTATION TO POLITICS", OR AS THE "ATTITUDNAL AND BEHAVORIAL MATRIX WITHIN WHICH THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IS LOCATED." IT ALSO ANALYZES THE QUESTION OF USE. IT CONCLUDES THAT BOTH INTERPRETATIONS ARE VALID UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES AND THAT FURTHER DEBATE OVER DEFINITIONS IS NOT LIKELY TO BE OF GREAT UTILITY.

The book examines the beliefs and views of those who identified themselves as 'democrats' during the Gorbachev era in Soviet politics, and traces the development of those beliefs in the post-Soviet era. The book basis its analysis on attitudes towards the Soviet state, beliefs about the ideal future democracy, and beliefs about Russia's place in the world. The author also places ideology of Russian democrats into the context of Russia's and the world's intellectual history.
