A two-step synthesis approach was utilized to grow CaMnO3 on M-, R- and C-plane sapphire substrates. Radio-frequency reactive magnetron sputtering was used to grow rock-salt-structured (Ca, Mn)O followed by a 3-h annealing step at 800 degrees C in oxygen flow to form the distorted perovskite phase CaMnO3. The effect of temperature in the post-annealing step was investigated using x-ray diffraction. The phase transformation to CaMnO3 started at 450 degrees C and was completed at 550 degrees C. Films grown on R- and C-plane sapphire showed similar structure with a mixed orientation, whereas the film grown on M-plane sapphire was epitaxially grown with an out-of-plane orientation in the [202] direction. The thermoelectric characterization showed that the film grown on M-plane sapphire has about 3.5 times lower resistivity compared to the other films with a resistivity of 0.077cm at 500 degrees C. The difference in resistivity is a result from difference in crystal structure, single orientation for M-plane sapphire compared to mixed for R- and C-plane sapphire. The highest absolute Seebeck coefficient value is -350 mu VK-1 for all films and is decreasing with temperature. ; Funding Agencies|Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) through the Future Research Leaders 5 program; Swedish Research Council (VR) [2016-03365]; Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation through the Wallenberg Academy Fellows program; European Research Council under the European Communitys Seventh Framework Programme (FP7 = 2007-2013) ERC Grant [335383]; Swedish Government Strategic Research Area in Materials Science on Functional Materials at Linkoping University (Faculty Grant SFO-Mat-LiU) [2009 00971]

"Since the end of human action, as distinct end products of fabrication, can never be reliably predicted, the means used to achieve political goals are more often than not of greater relevance to the future world than the intended goals". – Hannah Arendt "Between the experience of living a normal life at this moment on the planet and the public narratives being offered to give a sense to that life, the empty space, the gap, is enormous". - John Berger 'Bo' Gritz turned 80 this year. The great majority of those serving under him have not. Lt. Col. James Gordon 'Bo' Gritz - "the American Soldier" for the Commander-in-Chief of the Vietnam War – is one of the most decorated combatants in US history. Gritz was at the heart of American military and foreign policy – both overt and covert - from the Bay of Pigs to Afghanistan. He was financed by Clint Eastwood and William Shatner (via Paramount Pictures) in exchange for the rights to tell his story Their funding supported his 'deniable' missions searching for American POWs in Vietnam. He has exposed US government drug running, turning against the Washington elite as a result. He has stood for President, created a homeland community in the Idaho backlands and trained Americans in strategies of counter-insurgency against the incursions of their own government. He claims to remember every single one of the 400 people he killed. The media turned him into the inspiration behind Rambo, The A-Team's Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith and Coppola's Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. What does it mean to make a life like this? 6500 word essay

We review the thin film growth, chemistry, and physical properties of Group 4-6 transition-metal diboride (TMB2) thin films with AlB2-type crystal structure (Strukturbericht designation C32). Industrial applications are growing rapidly as TMB2 begin competing with conventional refractory ceramics like carbides and nitrides, including pseudo-binaries such as Ti1-xAlxN. The TMB2 crystal structure comprises graphite-like honeycombed atomic sheets of B interleaved by hexagonal close-packed TM layers. From the C32 crystal structure stems unique properties including high melting point, hardness, and corrosion resistance, yet limited oxidation resistance, combined with high electrical conductivity. We correlate the underlying chemical bonding, orbital overlap, and electronic structure to the mechanical properties, resistivity, and high-temperature properties unique to this class of materials. The review highlights the importance of avoiding contamination elements (like oxygen) and boron segregation on both the target and substrate sides during sputter deposition, for better-defined properties, regardless of the boride system investigated. This is a consequence of the strong tendency for B to segregate to TMB2 grain boundaries for boron-rich compositions of the growth flux. It is judged that sputter deposition of TMB2 films is at a tipping point towards a multitude of applications for TMB2 not solely as bulk materials, but also as protective coatings and electrically conducting high-temperature stable thin films. ; Funding: Swedish Energy Research [43606-1]; Carl Tryggers Foundation [CTS20:272, CTS16:303, CTS14:310]; Swedish Government Strategic Research Area in Materials Science on Advanced Functional Materials at Linkoping University (Faculty Grant SFO-Mat-LiU) [2009-00971]; Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Project Grant (The Boride Frontier) [KAW 2015.0043]; Swedish Research Council (VR)Swedish Research Council [621-2010-3921]; AForsk Foundation [16-430]

"This article tries to understand what type of film is approved by the Nicolae Ceauşescu regime and how it is promoted, through various propaganda channels. In this sense, we choose to discuss the film made by the artistic couple Manole Marcus - Titus Popovici, The Power and The Truth (1972), and we resort to a content analysis to understand the way it was made. We are also interested in the echoes of the film in the press of the time and how with the help of newspaper articles the authorities inoculate the idea that this film is the most important cinematographic achievement of the moment, a benchmark for political productions to be made from that point on.
