The aim of this study was to identify factors that contributed to the successful transition off academic probation for undergraduate students at MacEwan University1. Focus groups were conducted with volunteers enrolled in any of the main faculties/schools who had successfully to taking time off from university, changing programs, or personal growth. Students underutilized available support services while on academic probation largely due to feelings of embarrassment and shame. Recommendations for institutional improvements centered on personalized approaches that identified existing resources such as listing resources along with contact information in notification of academic probation letters sent to struggling students. Finally, those who successfully transitioned off probation also emphasized the need for personal contact with university staff to help understand the implications of academic probation, and the steps required to successfully transition off it.

This paper explores identification with the nation-state as homeland among young diasporic Armenians in France, Russia and the United Kingdom (UK). For dispersed Armenian communities worldwide, the emergence of a fragile nation-state since 1991 has represented a form of collective goal fulfilment accompanied at times by disillusionment in the national myth of the homeland as a place of sanctuary. We argue that the resulting shift in understandings of homeland markedly differentiates the diasporic experiences of Armenians of diverse backgrounds growing up in the post-independence era from those of previous generations. Key to this shift are ambivalent dynamics between memory and myth integral to personal struggles with the homeland. Analysing original interviews with Armenians aged 18 to 35 in three host states, we unpack how memories of contact with the Armenian state accumulated in youth interact with national myths about the homeland in the context of different family migration histories. The active engagement of young people with homeland myths is shown to play an important role in their recollections of first formative visits to Armenia. Through more regular contact with the state, disappointment in elements of politics and culture that clash with personal imaginings of the homeland can lead to ambivalence in identifying with Armenia. Ultimately, the state plays a key orienting role for many young diasporic Armenians, but clashes between recalled encounters and myths concerning the state can render it a place of partial belonging, unable to fulfil the ideals of the diasporic imagination. The findings highlight the value of attending to interaction between memory and myth in diasporic engagement with 'homeland' states more broadly.

Este artículo describe y analiza los valores que predominan en el mundo laboral hoy: ¿a partir de qué mecanismos organizacionales se prescriben esos valores? ¿Cómo los internalizan quiénes trabajan? ¿Qué tipos de conductas laborales son premiadas y/o castigadas? Para responder estos interrogantes proponemos estudiar —tomándolo como caso heurístico— a los agentes de ventas que trabajan en Contact Centers, y reapropiarnos de las nociones foucaultianas de "gobierno" y "gubernamentalidad", en clave de "conducción de conductas laborales". Desde el caso y enfoque propuesto, dos ejes se relacionan: las propias experiencias de los agentes de ventas; y las prescripciones de un tipo de organización, el management de Contact Centers. El resultado de esta relación será un triángulo que explica las conductas laborales de los agentes de ventas, definido por la "performance, la persuasión y la persecución", donde confluyen una gestión competitiva y violenta fomentada por la empresa junto a una autogestión personal de cada agente vinculada con dilemas éticos que se les presentan a éstos. The result of this relationship will be a triangle that explains the work behaviors of the sales agents, defined by "performance, persuasion and persecution", where a competitive and violent management promoted by the company converges with a personal self-management of each agent linked to ethical dilemmas that they face. This study extends previous research on the micro-level processes of job-seeking and demonstrates that job-seeking behaviors are affected by macro-level factors. Using a longitudinal research design, we monitored the job-seeking strategies of a diverse sample of recently unemployed labor market participants. Specifically, we examined the impact of shrinking or growing industry sectors on the use of personal contacts. Overall, results indicated that growth or decline in employment levels of the job-seeker's pre-displaced industry subsequently affected the likelihood of using cross-industry contacts during a job search. In addition, the use of cross-industry contacts significantly increased the likelihood of making an industry change. Limitations of the study and practical implications for conducting a job search in a contemporary environment are also discussed.

Considerable research indicates that personal contact from political campaigns can mobilize people to vote, but little attention has been given to whether the tone of the message matters. Studies of message tone have mostly been confined to mass media campaigns and ignored the growing role grassroots techniques play in contemporary political campaigns. Two randomized field experiments were conducted to determine the importance of message tone in grassroots contact. We find evidence that personally delivered messages can be effective at influencing voting preferences, but neither experiment uncovered a systematic difference between the effects of negative and positive messages on voter turnout or political attitudes. 23 pags., 6 figs. ; Endoplasmic reticulum–plasma membrane contact sites (ER–PM CS) play fundamental roles in all eukaryotic cells. Arabidopsis thaliana mutants lacking the ER–PM protein tether synaptotagmin1 (SYT1) exhibit decreased PM integrity under multiple abiotic stresses, such as freezing, high salt, osmotic stress, and mechanical damage. Here, we show that, together with SYT1, the stress-induced SYT3 is an ER–PM tether that also functions in maintaining PM integrity. The ER–PM CS localization of SYT1 and SYT3 is dependent on PM phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate and is regulated by abiotic stress. Lipidomic analysis revealed that cold stress increased the accumulation of diacylglycerol at the PM in a syt1/3 double mutant relative to wild-type while the levels of most glycerolipid species remain unchanged. In addition, the SYT1-green fluorescent protein fusion preferentially binds diacylglycerol in vivo with little affinity for polar glycerolipids. ObjectivesIntergenerational welfare contact (IWC) is a policy issue due to personal and social costs of 'entrenched disadvantage' across generations, yet few studies have quantified the burden of IWC on health. We examine the proportion of children who experienced IWC and other welfare contact (WC) types; and estimate cause-specific hospital burden.
ApproachA whole-of-population linked administrative data study of children in South Australia born 1991-1995 (n=94,358), followed from birth up to age 20 years and their parent/s (n=143,814). The study used de-identified data from the Better Evidence Better Outcomes Linked Data platform including data from Australian Government Centrelink (welfare payments), birth registration, perinatal birth records, and inpatient hospitalisations. Children were classified as: No WC, parent only WC, child only WC, or IWC. Cause-specific hospitalisation rates and cumulative incidence were estimated by age and WC group.
ResultsUsing Australian Government Centrelink data, WC was defined as parent/s receiving a means-tested welfare payment (low-income, unemployment, disability or caring) when children were aged 11-15, or children receiving payment at ages 16-20. IWC was WC occurring in both parent and child generations. IWC affected 34.9% of children, who had the highest hospitalisation rate (133.5 per 1,000 person-years) compared to no WC (46.1 per 1,000 person-years), parent WC (75.0 per 1,000 person-years), and child only WC (87.6 per 1,000 person-years). Of all IWC children, 43.0% experienced at least one hospitalisation between 11-20 years, frequently related to injury, mental health, and pregnancy.
Conclusions and RelevanceChildren experiencing IWC represent a third of the population aged 11-20. Compared to children with parent-only WC, IWC children had 78% higher hospitalisation rates from age 11 to 20, accounting for over half of all hospitalisations in this age group. Frequent IWC hospitalisation causes were injuries, mental health, and pregnancy.

AbstractIdentifying twins for a population-based register can be achieved through birth records or community surveys. We studied the feasibility and effectiveness of different methods of identifying and recruiting twins to establish a population based register. To trace twins a population survey was carried out using an interviewer administered questionnaire. We also inspected the birth registration certificates at a divisional secretariat reported from a specified hospital between the years of 1985–1997 and compared it to the birth register of this same hospital. To recruit twins a random sample of 75 twin pairs (150 twins) identified at the Divisional Secretariat were contacted through the post and 25 twin pairs (50 twins) were personally visited. The prevalence of twins was 6.5 twins per 1000 people in the area surveyed. The twinning rate at the hospital was 18.92 twins per 1000 births. A discrepancy of 38 multiples births between the hospital labour room records and those registered at the DS was noted. The response from the postal invitation for recruitment was 59% and the response from the personal invitation was 68%. (Difference 9.4% 95% CI; 7.06–11.73). Community survey and systematic inspection of birth records either at the hospital or the birth registration office was an effective method to trace twins. Once traced, personal contact was more effective than the postal invitation for recruitment of younger twins. A cost-effective approach would be to use a postal coverage followed by personal contact for non-responders. The alternative method, community coverage, would have financial implications.

Teaching foreign languages involves applicants mastering the skills and abilities of foreign language communication of a legal profile for purely professional purposes. In the course of training, future legal specialists should acquire the ability of professional communication in oral and written forms. The peculiarity of oral communication is that it takes place in the conditions of personal contact of partners. In written communication, they are separated by space and time, which allows them to focus on the content and form of the written text.

The study deals with the issue of employment in the form of home-office (working from home) and its impact on the lives of employees. The objective of this study was to assess diverse experience with working from home, to analyse employee satisfaction and effectiveness before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results show that the biggest problem related to working from home is inappropriate working space and equipment or lack of personal contact, which most affects the effectiveness of work.

Abstract
The antecedents of immigration attitudes have been extensively examined in academic research, in particular, with respect to media use and personal contact with immigrants. Research on the role of interpersonal discussions about the issue of immigration has been scarce, however. Results from a two-wave panel survey show that individuals holding unfavorable attitudes towards immigration engaged more often in interpersonal communication about immigration, which colored the overall effect of engaging in such discussions. The implications of these results are discussed in the concluding section.

The study hypothesizes that social capital of entrepreneurs enhances their opportunity recognition process. The study investigated metal- and ICT-ventures established in 1998 in three different regions of Finland. The results showed that entrepreneurs when recognizing opportunities have (1) active social interaction to acquire knowledge, to forecast future trends, and to evaluate information and decisions, (2) personal contacts to acquire knowledge and to analyze markets, and (3) cognitively committed relationships to evaluate and understand the information and to enact proactively future trends.

Findings from the fifth annual A. T. Kearney/Foreign Policy Globalization Index reveal resilience to globalization that runs deeper than transient political crises. Countries are ranked according to economic integration, personal contact, technological creativity, and political engagement, giving an idea of which ones are globalizing and which are not. Attention is given to the US, Russia, the People's Republic of China, Canada, the EU, and Iran, as well as to globalization's relationship with terrorism, public education spending, and corruption and freedom.
