"Born in an impoverished region of Galicia and possessed of little education and less money, Eduardo Barreiros (1919-1992) rose to become an immensely successful entrepreneur and one of Spain's most prominent industrialists. In this engaging biography, the first on a Spanish entrepreneur in English, Hugh Thomas recounts Barreiros's origins as an auto mechanic, his success in the motor industry, his tragic alliance with the Chrysler Corporation, and his littleknown role as a motor-industry founder in 1980s Cuba. Drawing on an unrivaled knowledge of Spanish history, Lord Thomas also brings to light Barreiros's critical role in the modernization of the Spanish economy in the post-civil war years." "The book offers a detailed portrait of Don Eduardo's personality, character, and numerous entrepreneurial endeavors as well as a full account of the difficulties the Franco-era government threw in the path of his capitalist activities. The relationship between Barreiros and the Chrysler Corporation is also described, along with the failed Dodge Dart project that ultimately cost Barreiros his business. Finally, the book recounts Don Eduardo's late-in-life efforts to help establish a motor industry in Castro's Cuba - a paradoxical conclusion for a great capitalist."--Jacket

This paper aims to assess the effect on Angola of the penetration of its borders by individuals, religious bodies and military forces from neighbouring German South West Africa. It covers the period of the creation of the German colony in 1883 and its attempts at self-sufficiency up to the outbreak of hostilities in 1914. It recounts the ill-starred attempts by Portuguese civil and military authorities to securely occupy the southern region culminating in the successful military occupation of the border area in 1907. It examines the period of the creation and role of the German Angola Bund and of the Joint Portuguese-German Economic Commission to southern Angola and their impact on Portuguese governorgeneral Norton de Matos and on Portuguese policy. The paper catalogues German military aggression in southern Angola prior to 1914. It recounts the circumstances leading to the dispatch to Angola by Lisbon of Portuguese troops and of their defeat by inferior German forces and the ensuing chaos leading to the consequent fall in Portuguese prestige in the entire southern Angolan region.

"Modern history persuasively demonstrates the inexorable link that binds comprehensive regulation to the global economy. This important book, rather than simply recount a litany of corporate governance failures, persuasively explains why, despite policymakers' best intentions, regulation has failed in the modern era. An objective study intended for a diverse readership, Corporate Governance Regulation unveils the underlying, root causes of regulatory failure."--Publisher's website
