Institutional care for seniors offers a cultural repository for fears and hopes about an aging population. Although enormous changes have occurred in how institutional care is structured, the legacies of the poorhouse still persist, creating panicked views of the nursing home as a dreaded fate. The paradoxical nature of a space meant to be both hospital and home offers up critical tensions for examination by age studies scholars. The essays in this book challenge stereotypes of institutional care for older adults, illustrate the changes that have occurred over time, and illuminate the continuities in the stories we tell about nursing homes.

Am 4. April 2017 wurde in Berlin auf einer Konferenz des Bundesministeriums für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend der Siebte Altenbericht der Bundesregierung "Sorge und Mitverantwortung in der Kommune - Aufbau und Sicherung zukunftsfähiger Gemeinschaften" vorgestellt. Er wurde aus der Perspektive jener Akteure kommentiert und diskutiert, die mit den Empfehlungen des Berichts angesprochen sind. Es nahmen Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Kommunal, Landesund Bundespolitik, der Wohlfahrtspflege sowie aus Interessensverbänden und Wissenschaft teil. Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung stand die Frage, wie die Empfehlungen der Sachverständigenkommission in der Praxis umgesetzt werden können und welche Hürden es dabei zu überwinden gilt. Anhand verschiedener Praxisbeispiele wurden die Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen einer zeitgemäßen lokalen Politik für ältere Menschen und mit älteren Menschen veranschaulicht und konkretisiert.

Hintergrund: Der Anteil älterer Menschen an der Bevölkerung nimmt stetig zu. Einer der Ansätze zur Bewältigung der zunehmenden Alterung ist der Einsatz von technischen Hilfsmitteln (Ambient Assisted Living - AAL), die es ermöglichen, dass alternde Menschen möglichst lange in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung wohnen bleiben können und die zu einer Entlastung der Health Professionals beitragen sollen. Hier wird eine Befragung zu den Nutzerpräferenzen von Senioren im Kreis Görlitz, Sachsen vorgestellt. Methodik: Um die AAL-Akzeptanz der Senioren zu untersuchen, wurde eine Befragung durch die Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz durchgeführt, die Aufschluss über die Bedürfnisse, Präferenzen und mögliche Barrieren älterer Menschen bezüglich assistierender Technologien geben soll. Es wurden insgesamt 29 Senioren befragt. Ergebnisse: Es zeigte sich, dass besonders Technologien, die die Sicherheit erhöhen, von den Befragten gewünscht werden (Rauchmelder, Wärmesensor). Hohe Akzeptanz erfahren auch der Transponder zur Türöffnung, die Klingel mit optischem Signal, die Geräteabschaltung und die automatische Flurbeleuchtung. Wenig Zustimmung erhalten die Terminerinnerung, das Informationsdisplay und die automatische Lüftung. Auch die Messung der Luftfeuchte mit Alarm und die Vitalerkennung mit Notruf werden kaum akzeptiert. Diskussion: Bezüglich der Akzeptanz durch einzelne Personengruppen (Einfluss soziodemographischer Faktoren), konnte nicht immer eindeutige Tendenzen erkannt werden. Die Ergebnisse sollen im Zuge einer Umfrage durch die Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz mit 1.000 Personen (Projekt: "Vertrauen in Assistenz-Technologien zur Inklusion - VATI") entsprechend überprüft und verifiziert werden.

This is the first book to address the issue of ageing after a long life with disability. It breaks new ground through its particular life course perspective, examining what it means to age with a physical or mental disability.

Die Studie beschreibt die völkerrechtlichen Vorgaben zu den Rechten auf Pflege und angemessene Unterkunft und untersucht deren Umsetzung in Deutschland. Im Fokus stehen das Diskriminierungsverbot, der Zugang zu Pflegeleistungen und -einrichtungen und die Voraussetzungen für eine selbst bestimmte Lebensführung. Mit Empfehlungen an Staat und Gesellschaft.

"Ein heute geborener Junge kann damit rechnen, 74,8 Jahre alt zu werden, ein
Mädchen hat rein statistisch sogar die Chance, 80,8 Jahre zu leben (vgl. Statistisches
Bundesamt 2003: 17). Diese Entwicklung ist begrüßenswert, zeigt sie
doch, dass durch medizinischen Fortschritt und verbesserte Lebensbedingungen
die Möglichkeit auf ein langes Leben steigt. Resultierend daraus kommt es aber
auch zu einer Veränderung des gesellschaftlichen Bildes von älteren Menschen.
Während die zunehmende Alterung der Gesellschaft bisher häufig unter dem
Gesichtspunkten ökonomischer Belastungen diskutiert wurde, liegen in ihr durchaus
positive Aspekte. So hebt der 5. Altenbericht die Chancen hervor, die mit
einer längeren Lebenserwartung und guten Gesundheit älter werdender Menschen
für sie selbst, aber auch für Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft verbunden sind.
Ein Bereich, dem hier besondere Bedeutung zukommt, ist die Seniorenwirtschaft1.
Ihr werden große ökonomische Potenziale vorausgesagt, die bisher bei
Weitem noch nicht ausgeschöpft sein sollen. Aus diesem breit gefächerten Spektrum
wird in dieser Arbeit der Fokus auf den Bereich des Wohnens gelegt. Dem
unmittelbaren Wohnbereich kommt mit zunehmendem Alter eine besondere Bedeutung
zu. Während Berufstätige neben ihrer Wohnung häufig den Arbeitsraum,
Clubräume und Vereine als sog. Freizeiträume zur Verfügung haben, ist für
Senioren2 mit zunehmendem Alter immer mehr die Wohnung ihr zentraler Lebensort
(vgl. Lehr 2004: 6). Wohnen Zuhause ist immer noch die bevorzugte Wohnform
älterer Menschen (vgl. ebd.), doch mit zunehmendem Alter verändern sich
die Ansprüche an das Wohnen und die Erfordernisse der räumlichen Gestaltung
des Wohnbereiches (vgl. Backes/Clemens 1998: 209)." (Textauszug)

Prevention is becoming ever more central in UK care policy for older people, though precisely what this entails, and how it works most effectively in social care and support, remains ambiguous. Set against the "newness" of recent social care legislation in Wales, this article explores the perspectives of professionals on prevention and community development, particularly for older people. This draws on qualitative data collected from 11 Welsh local authorities, four NHS Wales health boards, and eight regional third-sector organisations, incorporating 64 interviews with directors, executives, and senior managers. Recent research has highlighted concerns over the slipperiness of prevention as a concept, resulting in multiple interpretations and activities operating under its banner. Consistent with this, our data suggested a kaleidoscopic picture of variously named community-based initiatives working to support the intricate web of connections that sustain older people, as well as provide practical or material help. Similarly, professionals highlighted varied agendas of community resilience, individual independence, and reducing the need for state-funded health and social care, as well as a range of viewpoints on the roles of the state, private sector, and the third sector. Analysis revealed fragments of familiar themes in community development; positive hopes for community initiatives, tensions between the mixed agendas of state-instigated activities, and the practical challenges arising from systems imbued with neo-liberal ideas. Realising the promise of prevention will require deft steering through these challenges.

To examine the association between pet ownership and psychosocial outcomes among the oldest old in Germany during the Covid‐19 pandemic. Methods/Design: Data from the "Old Age in Germany (D80+)" study were used, a large, nationwide representative study covering both individuals living at home and individuals in nursing homes aged 80 years and above ( n = 2867 individuals). The telephone interviews were conducted from May to October 2021. Established tools (e.g., "Short Form of the Depression in Old Age Scale", DIA‐S4) were used to quantify the outcomes. Five groups were generated: (1) no pet ownership, (2) having at least one dog (but no other pets), (3) having at least one cat (but no other pets), (4) having at least one other pet (but neither dogs nor cats), (5) having at least two different types of pets (in any combination). Results: Multiple linear regressions showed that compared to individuals without a pet, individuals having at least one dog had significantly lower loneliness levels ( β = −0.21, p < 0.01). In the fully‐adjusted models, other forms of pet ownership were not significantly associated with the outcomes examined. Conclusion: Particularly living with a dog was associated with lower loneliness among the oldest old people in Germany. If living with a dog is in line with the preferences and attitudes of the very old, this could be a strategy for reducing loneliness in this age group.

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht anhand zweier empirischer Studien die sozialräumliche Lebenssituation und ihre Verbindung mit der Lebenszufriedenheit älterer Menschen in Deutschland. Die Datengrundlage bildeten der DEAS 2014 (Mahne/Wolff/Tesch-Römer 2016) und drei Indikatoren aus den INKAR (BBSR 2013); ausgewählt wurden 3823 Fälle in 204 (Stadt- und Land-)Kreisen und kreisfreien Städten, um die sozialräumlichen Zusammenhänge individueller und (infra )struktureller Merkmale mit dem Leben im Alter zu schätzen. Mehrebenenmodelle bieten den Vorteil, dass der Anteil der Varianz der hier interessierenden individuellen Regressanden, der auf kreisspezifische Merkmale zurückzuführen ist, geschätzt und der relative Zusammenhang mit bestimmten kontextuellen Hintergründen quantifiziert werden kann. Beide Studien bestätigen auf ihre Weise die folgenden Forschungsziele, wobei die erste Studie die quantitativen Zusammenhänge zwischen den genannten Aspekten auswertet und die zweite Studie zusätzlich qualitativ erhobene Daten auf Basis eines in dieser Arbeit entwickelten methodischen Vorgehens in ihrem räumlichen Kontext betrachtet. Forschungsziel A: Außerhäusliche Mobilität, soziale Kontakte und regionaler Kontext stehen in einem sozialräumlichen Verhältnis zueinander. Forschungsziel B: Das sozialräumliche Verhältnis zwischen außerhäuslicher Mobilität, sozialen Kontakten und dem regionalen Kontext steht im Zusammenhang mit der Lebenszufriedenheit im Alter.

In this article, issues of loneliness and exclusion from social relations in old age are examined from the perspective of older men and women. Our focus is on sources of loneliness they themselves perceive and what strategies they use to cope with it. Twenty‐nine interviews with older adults at risk of loneliness in the Czech Republic and their models of social convoys are analyzed. Surprisingly small gender differences in feelings of loneliness are found. A major source of loneliness for both men and women is the loss of a life partner. Perceptions of loneliness and the shape of social networks differ substantially in the case of lifelong singles and childless people. A second significant source for feelings of loneliness includes unsatisfactory relationships with close family. Based on the participants' accounts, three strategies for coping with loneliness are identified.
