Mercosur countries have witnessed a boom of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows since the early 1990s. However, regional integration, viewed in isolation, was not sufficient for the subregion to regain its attractiveness to FDI. FDI growth in individual Mercosur countries was closely related to reform efforts on the national level.The pattern of EU FDI in the subregion reveals some significant changes, notably in terms of its major sources and its sectoral composition. Furthermore, EU investors pursued strategies that differed from those of other foreign investors. Yet, the character of EU FDI has essentially remained unchanged so far. Whether efficiency-seeking FDI by the EU in Mercosur will gain prominence in the future depends critically on Mercosur's trade policy.

Der Europäischen Union stehen nach ihrer Osterweiterung erhebliche finanzielle Herausforderungen und Verteilungskämpfe bevor. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Reformvorschläge für das Finanzierungssystem der EU anhand normativer Kriterien zu diskutieren. Nach einer Analyse der bestehenden Finanzverfassung werden Anforderungen an ein rationales Finanzierungssystem der EU formuliert. Aufbauend auf Grundlagen der Finanzausgleichstheorie werden vier Gestaltungspostulate formuliert: Gerechtigkeit, Aufgabenadäquanz, Autonomie und Transparenz. Daran gemessen zeigt das bestehende Finanzierungssystem Schwächen, es besteht also Reformbedarf. Vorschläge für Reformen innerhalb des bestehenden Beitragssystems werden ebenso diskutiert wie die Erweiterung um neue eigene Einnahmen, insbesondere eine EU-Steuer. Mittelfristig wird jedoch die Finanzierung über ein sozialprodukt-proportionales Beitragssystem befürwortet.

Through the lens of legal pluralism and state sovereignty this research examines the competence and authority of the Council of Europe and the EU to handle the market aspects (technical performance and utility) as well as privacy (consent to a medical service and data protection requirements), and examines the obligations these two legal orders place on the Member States of the EU. This research traces the avenues for coexistence between the legal orders in relation to direct-to-consumer genetic testing, and examines how the coexistence of the Council of Europe and the EU is reflected in the legal framework that is relevant to the regulation of direct-to-consumer genetic testing

Using a framework of norm diffusion to determine the EU's international actorness in the context of its relations with ASEAN, this book provides a timely and in-depth analysis of EU-ASEAN relations. By investigating three aspects of regionalism support by the EU it presents a comprehensive account of norm diffusion between the EU and ASEAN.

Collective Action in the European Union is the first ever systematic investigation of collective action issues at the EU level itself. Bringing together an impressive array of EU and interest group scholars to investigate a key issue in European political economy, this study considers whether collective action is driven at the European transnational level by rational, utility maximising behaviour, or whether explanations couched in social terms are more convincing. The first chapters identify and address wider issues in transnational collective action. Later chapters apply these issues to specific domains, such as business, the professions, consumers, and environmental interests.

The strength of the 2008 financial and economic crisis and the resulting degree of resilience were heterogeneous among and within the European Union countries. Challenges and opportunities driven by regional-specific differences determined the ability to overshoot the precrisis levels of growth. Focusing upon Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics 2 (NUTS 2) European regions, we explore a novel conceptual framework related to regional economic resilience, namely the renewal capacity. Precisely, we concentrate on the capacity of regional economies to "renew" their growth paths in the labor market in the aftermath of the recent global crisis. We find some well-identified spatial patterns of regional employment renewal and we identify a set of territorial assets that allow regions to bounce back faster and more comprehensively than others to the economic downturn. Furthermore, there are significant differences between the drivers of the regional renewal of Old and New Member States. Our findings suggest potential policy directions at all levels for enhancing regional resilience.

Annual Report:The fifth annual report of the Managing Board of the European Payments Union (EPU) covered the period July I, 1954 to June 30, 1955. The financial year 1954—1955, the report noted, had been one of considerable economic expansion in member countries, although with some variation between them; the progress of the previous year, which had followed upon a period of relative stagnation, had continued and gathered momentum. The report noted that in some countries the rapid expansion had had repercussions both internally and externally which had required corrective measures. During 1954–1955 industrial production had increased greatly, the increase being most marked in base metal manufacturing, metal products and in chemical manufacturing. However, agricultural production of member countries, as a whole, had not changed from the previous year. The report stated that the greater industrial production had been the result of both increased employment and productivity; in a number of countries unemployment had been reduced to new low levels and in certain countries, the number of unfilled vacancies exceeded that of the registered unemployed. Concurrently, and in connection with the rapid economic expansion, salaries and wages had increased in practically all member countries to a much greater extent than in previous years.
