I looked down Jeremiah Road into CDD searching for Esther, past the frenzy of pedestrians, cars, bicycles, produce stands, and storefront awnings with dangling toys and sandals. Yet the feeling of fear was always bubbling below, fed by the knowledge that at any moment I could be questioned by a suspecting drug trafficker or get caught in a shootout. I maneuvered down a side street hoping to avoid at least one boca, sighing with relief when I finally spotted André heading my way. A Thousand Tiny Cuts chronicles the slow transformation of a connected region into national borderlands. Drawing on a decade of fieldwork in northern Bangladesh and eastern India, Sahana Ghosh shows the foundational place of gender and sexuality in the making and management of threat in relation to mobility. Rather than focusing solely on border fences and border crossings, she demonstrates that bordering reorders relations of value. The cost of militarization across this ostensibly "friendly" border is devaluation--of agrarian land and crops, of borderland youth undesirable as brides and grooms in their respective national hinterlands, of regional infrastructures now disconnected, and of social and physical geographies disordered by surveillance. "Why do politicians engage in nasty politics against domestic political opponents? Why do they insult them, accuse them of crimes and conspiracies, attempt to intimidate them, encourage violence against them, and in rare cases attack them with physical violence? The effects of nasty politics on democracy are mixed. It can be a legitimate tool for the powerless to gain attention. Or it can be a cynical ploy for incumbents to maintain their hold on power. Nasty politics influences the kinds of politicians who run for office, and its repeated use can turn voters off from politics. The potential for actual violence from nasty rhetoric is always lurking in the background"--

"Few places are more chaotic than jail. For incarcerated individuals and staff alike, the volatility of the jail environment is based in large part on its status as a temporary institution. Unlike prisons, where all incarcerated individuals have been convicted of a crime and are serving long sentences (typically of more than a year), jails overwhelmingly house individuals who are waiting a disposition to their court case (approximately 74%; Sawyer & Wagner, 2020); a minority of jailed individuals are also serving sentences under a year for minor offenses. While a jail is a temporary holding area for persons awaiting adjudication, temporary can mean days or years depending on factors often outside the control of the jailed person.
