Mortality inequalities remain substantial in many countries, and large shocks such as pandemics could amplify them further. The unequal distribution of COVID-19 confirmed cases suggests that this is the case. Yet, evidence on the causal effect of the epidemic on mortality inequalities remains scarce. In this paper, we exploit exhaustive municipality-level data in France, one of the most severely hit country in the world, to identify a negative relationship between income and excess mortality within urban areas, that persists over COVID-19 waves. Over the year 2020, the poorest municipalities experienced a 30% higher increase in excess mortality. Our analyses can rule out the contribution of policy responses (such as lockdown) in this heterogeneous impact. Finally, we show that both labour-market exposure and housing conditions are major determinants of the direct effect of the epidemic on mortality inequalities, but that their respective role depends on the state of the epidemic.

We here use panel data from the COME-HERE survey to track income inequality during COVID-19 in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Relative inequality in equivalent household disposable income among individuals changed in a hump-shaped way between January 2020 and January 2021, with an initial rise from January to May 2020 being more than reversed by September 2020. Absolute inequality also fell over this period. Due to the pandemic some households lost more than others, and government compensation schemes were targeted towards the poorest, implying that on average income differences decreased. Generalized Lorenz domination reveals that these distributive changes reduced welfare in Italy.

Objective: This study investigates how changes in parental relationship quality relate to children's socio-emotional development during early childhood and whether high-quality early childcare arrangements may act as a protective factor in children's environments. Background: We draw on family systems theory and the bioecological model of human development to conceptualise how different social environments may interact in their influences on children's socio-emotional development during early childhood and across the transition to primary school. Method: Based on a pooled sample of 636 US-American children who took part in the longitudinal NICHD Study of Early Childcare and Youth Development (SECCYD), we applied fixed-effects panel models to three time points between age 3 and first grade. Results: Whereas changes in parental relationships quality were not significant in predicting children's socio-emotional development from age 3 to 4.5 years, our results showed that a reduction in parental relationship quality was moderately associated with an increase in behaviour problems of children across the transition to first grade. We did not find any evidence of mitigating effects of the child-specific process quality of the ECEC arrangement, neither for informal nor formal care settings. Conclusion: The results suggest that initiatives designed to improve a couple's relationship quality might also be an effective way to further their children's socio-emotional development.

Er dient als Grundlage sozialpolitischer Diskurse, zur gezielten Formulierung kommunalpolitischer Handlungsstrategien und wird als Instrument zur Unterstützung der Entscheidungsfindung genutzt. Die Berichterstattung erfolgt dabei immer mehrdimensional. Sie nimmt Bezug auf zentrale sozialpolitischen Themen und beschreibt Entwicklungen im Zeitverlauf. Außerdem werden kleinräumige Unterschiede aufgezeigt und spezifische Zielgruppen betrachtet.

The adoption of a universal point system modifies the link between labor income and pension benefits. In this paper, we propose to measure the possible impact of such a change when considering different wage trajectories. We identify seven stylized case studies to characterize the main properties of the current system for employees in the private sector with full careers under the social security ceiling. To address the transition issue, we setup two methods for valuing acquired pension rights in the old system. The first is the immediate conversion of the pension rights into points. The second consists in making the rules of calculation coexist and paying pension benefits acquired before the reform in proportion to the contribution period length in the old system. We contemplate a benchmarch scenario of constant long-run generosity for a given career. The impact is shown not to depend on the income level but on the salary profiles: a redistribution is carried out in favor of weakly growing profiles at the expense of the steeper ones. For careers with poor contribution years, significant declines are to be expected. However, for low-wage careers, an increase in the minimum pension is likely to limit the impact of these decreases or even to lead to a higher perceived effective pension. The way in which acquired pension rights are valued is not neutral. The conversion is rather advantageous for the least dynamic careers while the nesting of the rules is more generous for the most dynamic careers. ; L'adoption d'un système universel de retraite par points modifie le lien entre les revenus du travail et la pension de retraite. International audience ; The appearance of COVID-19 is proving to be a difficult challenge not only for Africa but for the whole world. In order to prevent and curb, the leaders of the countries had to introduce health, economic and political changes and regulations, which were repeatedly sharply criticized. Although statistics show that the spread of the virus in Africa was far from the same as in China, Europe or the Americas, the world's strictest restrictions had to be put in place to stop the pandemic. At the same time, Africa has cut itself off from its main supporters, making its economic situation more difficult and risking the already weak stability of African societies.

Domestic abuse is a pervasive issue within the United States. Approximately three women will be murdered by an intimate partner every day and around half of all women will experience psychological abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime. As such, it is important to have legal avenues that survivors can pursue in order to ensure safety for themselves and their children. There are many obstacles to obtaining a civil order of protection despite it being the most common legal option survivors choose to pursue. Survivors must take on the burden of proof and hire their own attorney if they want legal representation, which places an immense amount of stress upon economically disadvantaged survivors. The American legal system places an unfair burden of responsibility upon domestic abuse legal advocates, while simultaneously concentrating its power around male ideals and wants. This paper will utilize the theories of bureaucratic representation along with feminist legal commentary to argue for an increase in funding towards free legal aid organizations as well as strict boundaries between the responsibilities of domestic abuse legal advocates and attorneys.
