In these new essays, a group of experienced ethnographers, a literary critic, and a historian of anthropology, all known for advanced analytic work on ethnographic writing, place ethnography at the center of a new intersection of social history, interpretive anthropology, travel writing, discourse theory, and textual criticism. The authors analyze classic examples of cultural description, from Goethe and Catlin to Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard, and Le Roy Ladurie, showing the persistence of allegorial patterns and rhetorical tropes. They assess recent experimental trends and explore the functions of orality, ethnicity, and power in ethnographic composition."Writing Culture" argues that ethnography is in the midst of a political and epistemological crisis: Western writers no longer portray non-Western peoples with unchallenged authority; the process of cultural representation is now inescapably contingent, historical, and contestable. The essays in this volume help us imagine a fully dialectical ethnography acting powerfully in the postmodern world system. They challenge all writers in the humanities and social sciences to rethink the poetics and politics of cultural invention.

By looking at the relationship between workplace culture and gender identity, this research examines ways to potentially improve women's satisfaction and perceptions of female workers in this presently disadvantageous work environment in Korea. Drawing from previous criticism for having prioritized inter-group processes over particular social identities, this research uses Social Identity Theory as the main theoretical framework in two studies to structure the factors affecting workplace environment, specifically workplace culture for women and working women's satisfaction with communication. The first study applies intra-group analysis to examine the impact that the gender composition of a school has on gender identity, and it examines the relationship between organizational gender composition and women's perceptions of workplace culture by employing an experiment within a survey, which contains scenarios of an imaginary workplace, to Korean female college students ( n = 439). The results demonstrate women attending women's colleges displayed stronger gender identity than those attending co-ed colleges on two dimensions of gender identity: in-group ties and centrality. The second study surveys Korean female workers ( n = 171) to examine the same relationships while more deeply looking into the effects of gender composition of the workplace on women's satisfaction with communication. The main finding shows that for a sex-integrated organization, women who attended women's colleges denoted higher communication satisfaction with supervisors and same-sex coworkers than women who attended coed colleges. Implications of these findings and future research directions are discussed.

This research aims at describing the implementation of effective school management based on the principal leadership in one of Public Primary Schools in Sumedang Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The principal who implemented effective school management had the potential to produce high-achieving young generation because the school scope could optimize its function as an educational institution that carried out economic, humanitarian, social, political, cultural, and educational functions. One aspect that could support the implementation of effective school management was the principal leadership in making decisions, communicating, directing and developing the staff, solving problems and evaluating school activities. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and documentation studies. Furthermore, the results proved that the principal leadership was one of the main factors in implementing effective school management in terms of technology, school culture, information systems, and organizations.

Der Autor betrachtet in seinem Beitrag die religiöse Erziehung und den Religionsunterricht in den Elementarschulen Dänemarks. Das Land ist von einer engen Verbindung zwischen Staat und protestantischer Kirche geprägt. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren ist das staatliche Programm zur religiösen Erziehung ausgeweitet worden auf das Studium nicht-christlicher Religionen während man im Grundsatz im Mainstream des lutherischen Christentums verblieben ist. Der Autor nimmt eine Analyse der Paradoxie zwischen der Bewahrung "der" christlichen dänischen Werte und der multireligiösen Gesellschaft vor. Der Beitrag betrachtet zunächst den historischen und gegenwärtigen religiös-politischen Kontext und wirft dann einen Blick auf das Bildungswesen, bei dem er die "Folkeskolen" und die religiöse Erziehung in den "elemenatary schools" in den Jahren 1814-1989 in den Blick nimmt. Schließlich wird Religionsunterricht und religiöse Erziehung im Schuldiskurs ab 1989 bis heute untersucht und die Veränderungen im Spannungsfeld von De-Säkularisation, Identitätspolitik und Kulturkampf beschrieben. AbstractSchool‐based sex education (SBSE), an institutional attempt to interrupt and correct the sexual socialization of young people, operates at the levels of structure, interaction, and culture. At the structural level SBSE has been found to endorse a particular set of cultural messages about sex and sexuality that reinforce patterns of inequality. This is often the case regardless of program type (e.g., abstinence versus comprehensive). However, there is little empirical focus on the actual classroom practices and other social interactions that constitute SBSE in the United States. In this paper, I will provide an overview of the field of SBSE research, reading the findings at the interactional level. In particular, I will review findings on curricula, stakeholder perspectives, and effects in a discussion of the importance of both interaction and culture in SBSE practices. Finally, I will use criticisms raised in existing SBSE scholarship to pose opportunities for sociological research into the topic.

Abstract School superintendents in the 21st century face a prolific media culture with widespread and easy public access to information. The internet allows instantaneous dissemination of information and news about educational issues (Kowalski, 2005). Because community members, staff, parents and students can quickly communicate using the internet and cell phones, modern day superintendents need to be adept in dealing with both internal and external communication (Kowalski, McCord, Peterson, Young & Ellerson, 2011). Internal stakeholder groups include school staff, parents and students. These communications also arise and originate from external stakeholder groups which include the information and social media networks, news media, community leaders, local and state political leaders, and higher education (Kowalski et. al., 2011; Lockhart, 2011). The problem for the study was to analyze Minnesota school superintendents' perceptions of the impact of intense media scrutiny and relations with communication media in general on their sense of influence, length of tenure and professional aspirations regarding their profession. In light of the rapid changes in communication technologies, school leaders are increasingly being subjected to more scrutiny regarding their decisions about school change and policy. At times this scrutiny becomes not only intense, but hostile and even threatening (Carr, 2013; Eaton & Sharp, 1996; Hawk & Martin, 2011; Metzger, 2003; Metzger, 1997). The study examines to what extent this news media environment impacts the role of the superintendent. The study examines superintendent perceptions regarding their interactions and experiences with media culture using a questionnaire and selected interviews. Survey data was gathered from approximately [300] public school superintendents who are members of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) professional organization. Three superintendents were invited to participate in a follow-up interview in order to glean additional perspectives and information regarding their interactions and experiences with media culture. Participants were asked to complete a 23-item survey in summer 2014 using Survey Monkey®. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics for selected items and non-numerical language to analyze results from open-ended comments. Qualitative methods were used to analyze results from selected interviews. Results from the study may assist current and aspiring school superintendents to gain a deeper understanding of how information technology and the communication age impacts professional ambition and ability to carry out this role. The research questions for the study were: 1. To what extent does the media culture affect the superintendent's leadership success and perception of one's ability to influence and impact the organization? 2. To what extent does the media culture impact the professional tenure (longevity) and career of school superintendents? 3. To what extent does the media culture affect the professional aspirations of school superintendent? In the study, the impact of the media culture on the role of the superintendent was found to be distracting from job responsibilities. The results of the survey displayed that the slant or bias of news information and social media were strong factors that impacted professional tenure and job satisfaction.

AbstractSchool‐based sex education (SBSE) represents an attempt on the part of institutions to interrupt and correct the sexual socialization of young people. In this examination of scholarship on SBSE, I provide an overview of the field of academic approaches to SBSE and argue for the application of a variety of sociological frameworks to future studies. Much of the extant sociological literature on SBSE tends to focus on the implications that political rhetoric has for policy and funding, curricula, and stakeholder perspectives. In this paper, I will discuss this literature vis‐a‐vis the structural level (e.g. policy, law, funding). Further, because both structure and interaction are embedded in cultural contexts, I will discuss the role of culture as treated in the literature. I will then discuss the scholarly criticisms of SBSE contained in the literature as opportunities for sociological article of SBSE.

Then the data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative.The results showed that the implementation of the nation's culture and character education in the school culture " bintaraloka " in SMP Negeri 3 Malang applied through routine school activities , school programs , Through programs such as the school Friday clean , . Through self-development such extracurricular scouts, music, sports , honesty canteen facilities and student council . In addition, through subjects to teachers always give a good role models. The solution is a school needs to provide outreach to all piha from parents, and establish relationships with others in the development of education pihal culture and national character itself.

The article deals with issues related to the formation of an economic culture in Russia and foreign countries. The authors note that representatives of various professions are engaged in the problem of economic culture recently. Researchers emphasise that recently the state's attention has turned to the direction of familiarising of Russian high school pupils with economic culture. At the same time, they believe that Russian business is in no hurry to invest big finances in school, trying to get rid of only small investments. The authors conducted research in these countries and observed the interaction of school and business. The article presents data on the interaction of business and schools in the United States and China, which has taken new forms of late and promotes practical and effective shape of their pupils' the economic culture.
