This chapter analyzes the interaction between social movements and political actors in a democratic context, with an emphasis on the relationship with political parties. Based on the case study of the Chilean student movement, it discusses how this movement has shown resilience and strong mobilization capacity, but at the same time faces great obstacles in reaching the broad impacts it seeks. In order to understand this paradox, we argue that it is important to consider the contradictory and ambiguous but progressive distancing between the student movement and traditional political parties. This process of distancing is traced back to the years 2005–2006, during a previous mobilization of high school students. In thinking about the strategies of the movement, the ideology of the governing coalition (right- or left-wing) matters less than for previous generations of activists, as does the political affiliation of representatives in Congress.
A comprehensive analysis of the political discourse is carried out, which concerns the featuresof the functioning of political parties in Ukraine. Attention is focused on the fact that, like any discursiveinteraction, political discourse not only reflects existing ideas about the current state of developmentof political parties and the party system. Political discourse also creates and changes them, since it isin the process of interaction that citizens analyse, perceive or reject the views of other citizens, respectively transforming those that were previously held. It is found out that in contrast to politicaldiscussions about specific political problems that political parties face in their activities, political discourseincludes not only rational statements, but also emotional ones.It is proved that political discourse covers all broadcasting of the political sphere. That is, all discursive actsthat take place in political institutions with the participation of subjects of political interaction, inparticular, political leaders and representatives of political parties. It is determined that the most commonforms of political discourse are public speeches by leaders of political forces, parliamentary debates, discussion of party and election programs. An important component of political discourse is speech actsthat are on the verge of politics and mass communication, such as press conferences, presentations ofpolitical programs, placement of campaign materials in the media and discussions of party speakers onradio, television and social networks. It is noted that political parties should actively involve citizens indiscussions in social networks. It is proved that the lack of proper communication with citizens via Internetresources reduces the ability to convey the necessary information to voters. It was found out that we can study political competition of parties through political discourse, which isable to act as an effective resource (pro-government or opposition parties), constructing and drawingcertain outlines of political reality, and which is able to legitimize certain subjects of politics. In politicaldiscourse, a certain conditional reality is constructed, which claims to become a political practice. In otherwords, the discussion between political parties on the "democracy-authoritarianism" dichotomy maycreate new rules of the game in the political process.A democratic society not only declares, but also actually guarantees the rights and fundamental freedomsof citizens. Political parties are important elements of the socio-political structure of society and areimportant subjects of the political process. In democratic countries, they assume important socialfunctions, while becoming an integral part of society. Political discourse makes it possible to find out therole of political parties in political processes and makes it necessary to form new approaches to the studyof their activities. Focuses on the strategic choices that actors within social democratic parties face when dealing with their intraparty opponents. Argues that adaptation is more difficult for parties with a strong organizational connection to blue-collar unions in declining industries and relatively smooth for parties with a greater organizational independence from unions in declining industries. The Europeanization of national political parties is one of the most important topic areas in the Europeanization literature. Slovenian parties have slowly started to act in the arena of the European Union (EU) since the 1990s, and questions regarding the degree of their Europeanization have become increasingly relevant. In light of Ladrech's conviction that the clearest types of evidence of Europeanization may be found in programme changes, we focus our research on party manifestos. By conducting a computer-assisted content analysis of 65 manifestos between 1990 and 2014, we were able to examine the presence of EU-related topics and the frequency of reference to these topics, utilizing a quantitative measure of party Europeanization. We conclude that the presence of Europe in Slovenian parliamentary party manifestos is a consequence of an incremental process that intensified with the turn of the millennium and peaked with Slovenia's accession to the EU. In addition, we observe that the interaction of variables has an important effect on the salience of Europe in manifestos, with the variables involved in a mutual feedback process, thus indicating that size, governmental status and EU party links matter. In the case of fringe parties, party family proved relevant as well. Adapted from the source document.
EXPLAINING IDEOLOGICAL CONFLICT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CLASSIC THEME OF STUDIES OF PARTY ORGANIZATIONS. THE AIM OF THIS PAPER IS TO RE-EXAMINE MAY'S LAW, BASED ON RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY, WHICH SUGGESTS THAT DUE TO DIFFERENTIAL INCENTIVES SUB-LEADERS ARE LIKELY TO PROVE THE MOST EXTREME STRATUM IN PARTY ORGANIZATIONS, WHILE NON-LEADERS ARE THE MOST MODERATE, AND TOP LEADERS ARE LOCATED EQUIDISTANT BETWEEN THESE GROUPS. THE STUDY, BASED ON LARGE-SCALE SURVEYS OF POLITICIANS, LOCAL CONSTITUENCY OFFICERS, PARTY MEMBERS AND VOTERS IN THE 1992 BRITISH GENERAL ELECTION, THROWS CONSIDERABLE DOUBT ON THIS PROPOSITION.
(Autorenreferat)
Voters are becoming unstable in their voting behaviour, and party identification is in decline. These are only two of the developments that have their roots in a more individualistic society. Parties are confronted with these developments and have to find a way to maintain their attraction for the electorate. This article illustrates the challenges for parties and gives recommendations for action to maintain political stability.
Electorate voting behavior is one of the significant impact components on the socio-political and economic life of the Albanian Republic. This is officially formulated in the article 1, point 3 of the Albanian Constitute: 3 "Governance is based on a system of elections that are free, equal, general and periodic". It expresses the direct mechanism in which the individual takes part in political representation, constituting one of the directions in focus of the political parties whose aim is to increase the percentage of voters by offering programs during the electoral process in the interest of political platforms. This article analyses and advices how the parties should act to increase their voting percentage and become a "winner player of the electoral game". However, this is achieved only by bringing in stake the real interests of the voters, thus the development of policies based on their interests, based on of types of voting behavior, such as socio-economic, psychological, age, gender, individual and group interests, etc. As a result, the study and knowledge of the dynamics of voting behavior (absent, rational, ideological, neutral voting behavior) is the step that should take the "political party" actor for this purpose. Article shows how to change the public opinion of voters according to televised political leaders. Combining the results of monitoring television with opinion polls have shown the strategies they had TV stations in election campaigns and the effectiveness of these strategies.
Professionalism is not the same as pragmatism, & though they should be kept separate to avoid making the behavior of party leaders appear similar when it is not, many studies fail to recognize the difference in the multi-item measures employed. The case is presented for this view in a number of ways. First, it is argued that the distinction can be discerned in the study of parties, & that even some degree of consensus exists on the terms denoting the distinction. Then, after isolation of operational definitions for both dimensions, evidence is drawn from interview or questionnaire responses of 128 Ind precinct committeemen & from responses of 2,291 convention delegates to the 1972 convention survey conducted by the Center for Political Studies to demonstrate that, at the local & national levels of analysis, the dimensions yield results that contrast. Finally, in a comparison of the overall performance of these two concepts in relation to a variety of behavioral characteristics, pragmatism is shown to lack the explanatory power of professionalism. 4 Tables, 19 References.
