The Theory of General Devolution: A Call for an African Solar Renaissance
In: Journal of black studies, Band 49, Heft 7, S. 627-646
ISSN: 1552-4566
Through its theory of general devolution, this article shows that as African holistic epistemology was pushed at the fringe of cultural and scientific practices, Africa lost the advances it enjoyed in precolonial time in the domains of equality of the genre, ethical norms, medicine, textile, astronomy, and so on, because African scholars could not defend the scientific validity and superiority of the holistic epistemology on which these traditional values are based. For the solution to this general devolution, solar renaissance is urged as the reintroduction of solar religion which will practically result in the parallel reintroduction of the initiatory education with its accompanying development of the potential for the freedom soul, a powerful tool against "epistemological obstacles." The demonstrated scientific validity of African holistic epistemology will thus lead to the revalorization of our original cost-efficient and cost-effective traditional technologies.

Voltaire's revolution: writings from his campaign to free laws from religion
"Voltaire, the pen name of François-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), was one of the most influential leaders of the French Enlightenment. His defense of individual freedom of conscience and his criticisms of religious fanaticism and oppressive orthodoxy had a telling effect on Western history, inspiring several leading founders of America's new laws. This is the first English translation of many of his key texts from his famous pamphlet war for tolerance, written from 1750 to 1768, originally published under pseudonyms to avoid imprisonment and to educate the average citizen. Included are "The Sermon of Rabbi Akib" (a searing attack on anti-Semitism), "Prayer to God" (from the famous Treatise on Tolerance), the hugely popular "Catechism of the Honest Man," "The Dinner at Count Boulainvillier's," and other witty, sometimes acerbic pieces that point out the errors in the Bible, the corruption of the clergy, and the religiously-inspired persecutions, both of his day and across the ages. Many of these pamphlets were burned in a losing battle by the authorities. With a lengthy introduction and copious notes by the editor and translator, plus an appendix including first-hand accounts of the battle by noted mathematician and French revolutionary Condorcet, Frederick the Great, Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith, and others, this excellent compilation will be a welcome addition to the libraries of anyone with an interest in human rights and freedom of thought"--
Religion and State-Formation in Transitional Societies: Sri Lanka in a Comparative Perspective
Was erklärt Unterschiede im Verhalten? Das Buch behandelt die Verbindung zwischen Religion, Staatenbildung und Rationalität theoretisch und gibt tiefe Einsichten in die Politik des Buddhismus in Sri Lanka von der Unabhängigkeit bis heute.
Sociabilidad y poder local: los Bomberos Voluntarios de General Sarmiento (1945 -1983) ; Sociability and local power: the volunteer firefighters of General Sarmiento (1945 -1983)
; This article focuses on the functioning of the volunteer firefighters of former district of General Sarmiento in Buenos Aires during the period 1945 - 1983. This entity has occupied an important place in everyday life and it was a key actor of intricate social and political networks. Here are reconstructed the emergence and development of the association and the links it established with other institutions and with local government. The institutional and personal links established between Firefighters and other local players were the bases of the entity growth. We uphold that the Firefighters Department maintained an intimate and nodal link with local government, which was one of the main economic and institutional supporters of the entity regardless of authorities' replacements. This relationship was complemented, especially ...

Morality in context: A multilevel analysis of the relationship between religion and values in Europe
In: Storm , I 2016 , ' Morality in context: A multilevel analysis of the relationship between religion and values in Europe ' Politics and Religion , vol First View . DOI:10.1017/S1755048315000899
The exact relationship between religiosity and moral values is understudied, and it is unclear what the process of secularization means for the morality of Europeans. Previous research shows that religion is associated with low levels of political and economic development. A potential explanation is that religion provides an alternative moral authority to the authority of the state. Using data from four waves of the European Values Study (EVS) 1981-2008, I analyze attitudes to personal autonomy (vs tradition) and self-interest (vs social norms) in a multilevel model of 48 European countries. The results show that religious decline has been accompanied by an increase in autonomy values, but not self-interest, that the relationship between religion and morality is stronger in more religious countries, and that it has declined since the 1980s. We also show that religiosity is more negatively associated with self-interest among people with low confidence in state authorities.

Race and Religion in Everyday Life: Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and Christian Privilege Among Female Converts in the Netherlands
In: Sociology of religion
ISSN: 1759-8818
Abstract
This article analyzes how the intersections of race and religion impact the experiences of women converting to Judaism, Christianity, or Islam in the Netherlands. It builds on the innovative historical and philosophical work by scholars who call attention to the intersections of race and religion. In ethnographic studies of female converts such entanglements of race and religion have primarily been noted in the case of white converts in Islam. However, research into race and racialization among Christian and Jewish female converts is rare, and a comparative approach even rarer. A bottom-up comparative approach, I argue, has the potential to critically examine not only the positions of religio-racialized minorities, but also the mechanisms of religious/racial hegemony at work in Western Europe. The article thus explores how becoming a religious minority impacts one's sense of belonging to the nation and how processes of racialization, specifically antisemitism and Islamophobia, impact the conversion process.

Radical Political Theology: Religion and Politics After Liberalism by Clayton Crockett
In: https://doi.org/10.7916/D8DV1J7H
As the supposed victory of liberal global capitalism becomes more widely accepted, the religious (re)turn to modernity's secular world deconstructs the haphazardly constructed walls that divide the religious from the secular. While postmodern theology exemplifies those attempts at operating within the postsecular logic, it is decidedly apolitical, bordering on conservatism. Clayton Crockett's Radical Political Theology represents a sophisticated radical theology with the ambitious goal of decentering establishment theology while maintaining an explicitly political focus. Indeed, at its most fundamental level, Crockett's theopolitical project exists as a union of opposites that exhibits rewarding uses of post-Marxism, postmodernism, postliberalism, and postsecularism. With the rise of the Religious Right in America and what Naomi Klein calls "disaster capitalism" over the last three decades, many thinkers appear to be lost in the liberal-conservative binary while also stuck relying on pre-modern values in order to counterpose today's ruling regimes. Responding to this climate, Crockett proposes to "sketch out a constructive theology that is neither liberal in a classic sense nor conservative or orthodox in any way, whether politically or theologically." This will demand a radical theology, which finds its roots in the American academy's tradition of the death of God and postmodern theologies, as a counterweight to the Religious Right's conservative Christianity, while also pursuing radical political commitments. Crockett explicates the focus of such theopolitical commitments by "suggesting that the political and the theological problem of our time is that of freedom. Radical theology's task is to think freedom, which means to think the death of God, especially since the idea of God traditionally grounds sovereign power and serves as its highest instantiation."
