AbstractModels of maturity in corporate social responsibility (CSRM) and in sustainable innovation (SIM) allow us to evaluate how a company is evolved in a given area, so that it can trace a strategic path of improvements in the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This study developed maturity models seeking to verify the influence of CSRM on the SIM and of these dimensions in the business performance (BP). The analysis, grounded on resource‐based theory, used structural equation modeling with a sample of 154 Brazilian companies. It was found that CSRM exerts influence on the SIM and that both positively influence the BP. The use of these models can assist companies in creating value, generating competitive advantage, and promoting superior performance.

Sie analysiert, ob das Management eines Unternehmens mit Hilfe von CSR die Risiken von M&A, die heutzutage zu den wesentlichen Treibern für Wachstum und Fortbestehen von Unternehmen zählen, besser einschätzen und steuern kann. Vier Indikatoren (Gesellschaft, Mitarbeiter, Umwelt, Performance) werden zur Bewertung von unternehmerischer Nachhaltigkeit und deren Einfluss auf eine M&A herangezogen. Dabei weist zwar nur der CSR-Teilbereich Umwelt einen statistisch nachweisbaren, positiven Zusammenhang auf, was jedoch nicht bedeutet, dass ein möglicher Zusammenhang zwischen CSR und M&A-Erfolg abgelehnt werden kann. This book presents a multidisciplinary and multifaceted view of the state of corporate social responsibility (CSR) development in organizations in different industries around the world. It is based on the assumption that companies today must shift their focus to their long-term prosperity and the complex and interrelated environmental, social, economic and political ecosystems within which they function. The book tracks ideas through to impacts, offering unique perspectives on stimulating topics such as awareness among female entrepreneurs in Nigeria, views of upper-management in Polish firms, Japanese CSR strategies and the social relevance of corporate initiatives, pragmatic approaches of CSR design principles in Scandinavia and many more. The book collects not only examples from different countries and global regions, but also cases from a diverse range of globally relevant industries. It discusses the different stages of CSR development at a professional, conceptual and strategic level, and integrates them into a comprehensive framework to define the adequate course of action for each stage.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the CSR practices, business-community relations, and the missing links in CSR- community development in Ethiopia. Approach/Methodology/Design: Case study and thematic analysis of data on 45 structured interviews of key informants from federal and regional government, companies, and local community was collected, transcribed, and analyzed to identify the current CSR practices and consequences, and the missing links in CSR-community development interface. Findings: The CSR is ad-hoc philanthropy activity based on neo-liberal and voluntary approach motivated by market performance, reputation and image building objectives. There is no community development orientation, no social and environmental impacts. There are tax dodging, deforestation, water and chemical pollutions, britches of labour and community rights, and related CSiRs. National indigenous culture based community development oriented mandatory CSR policy, coordinating agency, engaging community, measuring the implementation, rewarding good CSR performance and punishing CSiRs are recommended. Practical Implications: The study has implications for academics, managers, policy makers, public administrators, community activists and leaders. It contributes to CSR approach in developing countries, CSR theories, thinking, and practice in African context, the business-community relations, the business management approaches, and scope of stakeholders in improving CSR to contribute to community development. Originality/value: This study's originality lies in bringing Ethnic diversity, federal- reginal government, political history, collective rights, power of community and nationalism in CSR to the front.

"Although literature on corporate social responsibility is vast, research into the use and effectiveness of various communications through digital platforms about such corporate responsibility is scarce. This gap is surprising; communicating about corporate social responsibility initiatives is vital to organizations that increasingly highlight their corporate social responsibility initiatives to position their corporate brands for both consumers and other stakeholders. Yet these organizations still sometimes rely on traditional methods to communicate, or even decide against communicating at all, because they fear triggering stakeholders' skepticism or cynicism. A systematic, interdisciplinary examination of corporate social responsibility communication through digital platforms therefore is necessary, to establish an essential definition and up-to-date picture of the field. This research anthology addresses the above objectives. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to address issues of practicing social responsibility (SR) in small business, where SR implementation challenges are unique. The discussion examines the difficulties encountered by small business owners adopting SR practices, and the various strategies they learned in the process.Design/methodology/approachA total of 23 small business owner‐managers located in Western Canada were interviewed in‐depth, individually, and in groups. Group interviews were useful for validating and extending the themes and contradictions that arose in individual interviews, particularly in identifying the most common SR challenges and frustrations, and to compare individuals' learning patterns and diverse strategies of response.FindingsThe paper findings show that owners learned SR by working through three main areas of challenge within everyday sociomaterial practices: positioning SR commitments and affiliations; balancing diverse stakeholders with SR ideals and costs; and negotiating value conflicts within SR practice, as part of "becoming" a particular enterprise of SR engagement.Originality/valueThe paper suggests that SR may be most fruitfully studied by examining the traces of the networks, linkages, and boundaries formulated through everyday interactions, focusing not just on the social networks and information exchange among humans, but more deeply on the sociomaterial networks within which new practices such as SR emerge. Second, the paper underscores the importance of conceptualizing SR "learning" more in terms of practices that emerge through challenge and conflict than in acquisition and application of new knowledge and attitudes.

AbstractIn recent decades, the concepts of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and social media have gained immense importance among businesses and their stakeholders. These concepts have gained popularity and acceptance among both large and small businesses of most industries. However, the existing CSR literature showed that most studies concentrated on large businesses, leaving the domain of small businesses under‐explored. The literature review revealed that only a few researchers had investigated the influence of social media on stakeholder engagement and the CSR of small businesses. This research aimed to explore the impacts of social media on the CSR of small businesses and used a concurrent mixed‐method research design, employing survey questionnaires from 82 participants and semi‐structured interviews with eight participants. The study conducted among the owners and managers of small businesses in a local government district in New Zealand discovered that many of them considered social media beneficial to engage with stakeholders and understand CSR trends. It also found that social media encouraged businesses to understand their vision, values and implement policies that are environmentally friendly and beneficial to the employees.

PurposeThis paper aims to establish the extent to which small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) in Gauteng, South Africa involve business social responsibility (BSR) in their practices. It also aims to bring awareness of the importance that BSR has amongst SMEs. The objectives are to measure the involvement of SME's BSR on management performance, identify strengths and areas that need improvement of BSR and expose the potential usefulness of BSR in South African SMEs.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative comparative design was used to collect primary data from 326 respondents from 64 randomly selected SMEs in the study area. Structured interviews were used.FindingsThe findings revealed that SMEs in Gauteng had performed worst in the area of BSR out of the ten management performance scores measured. The study further found that most owner‐managers of the sampled businesses had university qualifications and most of these businesses had passed the survival stage.Research limitations/implicationsThe study excluded major components of BSR, and cannot be generalized to the remaining eight provinces.Practical implicationsIt is recommended that SMEs in the study area strengthen BSR as a marketing tool to grow their businesses. Furthermore, SMEs researchers should focus on bringing the benefits of BSR to SMEs operations.Originality/valueMany SMEs seem to understand that BSR is to be carried out only by large enterprises. This study exposes Gauteng SMEs to BSR since those that incorporated BSR in their operations were not doing enough.

These case studies represent one of the most comprehensive collections on contemporary business practices in the significant area of Corporate Social Respo.

The author argues for expanded coverage of corporate social responsibility in the U.S. law school curriculum. Corporate social responsibility is of increasing importance for businesses, particularly for those companies that conduct multinational operations. Current national legal and regulatory regimes fail to adequately address the social and environmental issues that arise in business operations. As a result, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and businesses have begun to promulgate voluntary codes ofconduct. These codes touch on such subjects as core labor standards, environmental protection, bribery offoreign government officials in international business and human rights. Examples include the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the Global Compact. Businesses have also implemented corporate social responsibility programs as part of their best practices. In addition, there are emerging areas of legal liability involving CSR principles, such as those created under the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions, the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the U.S. Alien Tort Claims Act. Although such developments are significant for business, they are not adequately covered in U.S. law school courses on corporate law and international business transactions. As a consequence, U.S. law schools are not adequately preparing their graduates to counsel clients on emerging CSR norms and are neglecting their responsibility to educate students on one of the fundamental values of the legal profession, namely promoting justice, fairness and morality. The author suggests a framework for a corporate social responsibility course or seminar that might be included as part of the U.S. law school curriculum.
